Campbells Barkly Durif
Rutherglen
Rutherglen may have the only major plantings of genuine Durif in the world, due to the Phylloxera vine disease. Rutherglen can also lay claim to the oldest productive examples in all of Australia. From within their quarantined vineyards at Rutherglen, Campbell's have been the protagonists of Durif for generations. Unquestionably, Durif at its finest, Campbells release The Barkly only in years when vintage conditions are exceptional.

The Durif of Rutherglen is unique, nowhere else in Australia are wines of such immense richness and power made from the variety. So rare is Durif that little exists outside Rutherglen. The few vines that have survived elsewhere produce such a different wine from the Rutherglen Durif that it is almost certain they are grown from a different clone. Barkly is what Colin Campbell believes Durif from Rutherglen should be. The vital ingredient is the climate, typically long, warm and dry autumn ripening periods. Choice parcels of the best fruit are vinified on skins in closed fermenters for six days followed by eighteen months maturation in a combination of American and French oak barriques.

Dark plum colour with ruby highlights. A fragrant nose of lavender, violet and raspberry over hints of dark chocolate and freshly ground coffee bean. Appealing red fruits upon entry with plum, mulberry and raspberry. A touch of varietal aniseed and ground clove adds interest, with a svelte tannin structure and finely integrated mocha oak rounding out the finish.

The Campbells of Rutherglen are a fourth generation winegrowing family dedicated to continuing a tradition established in 1870, of producing artisanal vintages reflecting the distinctive character of Rutherglen. Drawing on their intimate knowledge of local viticulture, Bobbie Burns is a traditional style of wine built around volumes of fruit exhibiting great finesse and subtle use of oak to compliment the full bodied Shiraz fruit flavours. From the eminent Bobbie Burns vineyard in Rutherglen, Shiraz is vinified on skins for a week in a mix of closed and rotary fermenters, followed by transfer to a selection of seasoned and new French and American oak barriques for a year's maturation.

Medium red with purple hues. Intense dark plum fruit with hints of ground spice and attractive regional notes of ironstone identify its Rutherglen provenance. Rich, mouth filling blood plum and mulberry on the front palate, fruit tannins and subtle cedar oak add freshness and structure, as firm, fine grained tannins add length to the finish. Delicious upon release, a long history suggests it will continue to evolve for many years.

The Campbells of Rutherglen are one of the nation's great winemaking dynasties, internationally recognized for their profound expressions of profoundly Australian Shiraz. Two of Rutherglen's defining varietal grapes have been assembled into a finely integrated, complex and engaging wine. The Shiraz component contributes full flavours with spicy berry fruit, Durif adds violet and black cherry characters, solid structure with length and a firm tannin finish.

Durif was first planted at Rutherglen in 1908 after being recommended by Francois de Castella, the Victorian Government's viticultural expert, who brought Durif back to Australia following a study tour of France. No other wine grape in Australia has created such a strong association with a single region as Durif with Rutherglen. The region's warm and dependable climate is in many ways similar to the Rhone, it comes as no surprise that Shiraz and Durif flourish here. Fruit is normally harvested in March and fermented on skins for a week. Following vinification and assembly of components, the wine is matured six months in a selection of French and American oak casks.

Deep crimson red. Fragrant and complex, Shiraz shows lifted plum fruit and cinnamon spice, Durif adds black cherry and earth characters. Shiraz predominates, providing lifted raspberry fruit on the palate, the lesser proportion of Durif makes its presence known with choc-berry flavours and aniseed over fine grained, lingering tannins. Well balanced and ready to enjoy upon release, the ideal wine to share with good friends around a grill of juicy meats.
