Brezza Barbera dAlba Cannubi 2009
Piedmont
Available in cases of 6
Barbera are made from low yield fruit, treated to long macerations and ageing in large oak barrels. In Australia the name Brezza has become synonymous with the Barbera from Piedmont. The Barbera d'Alba Cannubi is a taste of the hospitality shown by the Brezza family in their Hotel Barolo, and the robust, authentic wines Enzo Brezza produces in his winery below the hotel. Cannubi is one of the most famous Barolo vineyards, and Brezza have resisted the temptation to replant this precious plot of Barbera with more lucrative varietals.

Visitors to the Brezza winery's Hotel Barolo discover the wonders of Piedmont and the Langhe region in particular, and can do vintage with Brezza or other local winemakers. Everyone has a great time and the wines are in some ways just a bonus to the Brezza's biggest output, the amazing hospitality Hotel Barolo has been famous for since 1875% If you taste with Enzo Brezza in his little cantina, you'll try hand-made wines, all from their own plots within the Barolo commune and each from special sites. Enzo Brezza is just as likely to steer you away from his own wines to try one of his neighbour's and other wines of the region.

Bright scarlet colour. A flavoursome red, with assertiveness and confident personality. The result of mature 35+ years, low yielding Barbera vines on such a good site, is a deep and rich plummy red with layers of character showing the juicy generosity of this grape. The legendary Cannubi is the epitome of richness and complexity, opening slowly to bitter chocolate and spices, ripe with raisin, licorice and dried herbs. The flavours stay big and finish with a lovely crisp and savoury tingle. Barbera is a great food wine, with an affinity to simple foods like grills, it loves rich, earthy braises, but can also be a convincing and complex formal red as well.

Barolo
Available in cases of 6
The Commune of Barolo, in the Piedmont region of Italy's northeast, makes one of the world's great wines, it carries its own Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita. Barolo have a long established reputation for heavy, overtly tannic, Nebbiolo varietal wines which required many years to soften before drinking. Enter Brezza, one of the principal estates in Barolo and chief protagonist of the Barolo wars, who have taken the lead in fashioning a vigorously fruit driven style with congenial tannins and judicious, supportive oak.

Brezza operate twelve and a half acres of the most splendid vineyards in Barolo, dating back to 1885. The estate and wineworks are strategically placed very close to the heart of Barolo itself. Brezza's Nebbiolo vines, Lampia clone, are planted to sandy, silt and clay soils, facing west at an altitude of 300 metres and trained to vertical canopy management. The structure of soils on the Brezza property is very similar to that of nearby Sarmassa Hill, one of the most outstanding sites in all Barolo. A shorter maceration period is employed to control the extraction of unflattering tannins, fermentations are limited to a maximum of a few days, the final wine is aged in a selection of new and seasoned oak barriques.

Bright, ruby red colour. A lifted bouquet of cherries, liquorice and spice, balsamic, meats and herb. A ripe, fruit driven palate with bright varietal fruit, approachable in its youth and already showing good bottle development. Supply structured and exquisitely proportioned, Brezza Barolo Cannubi is renowened for its rich bouquet, even in its youth, displaying true elegance and finesse.
