Brands Laira Chardonnay 2012
Coonawarra
The superb Laira Vineyard was established by Captain Stentiford in 1893 on a premium parcel of choice Coonawarra Terra rossa soils. Pioneer and patron of the Coonawarra, Eric Brand became custodian of the vineyard more than half a century later. Today, Brand's Laira are widely regarded as some of the region's best plantings, producing wines of exceptional quality as evidenced by their consistent wine show success. The distinctive small berries of the vineyard lead to below average yields, translating into wines with intense fruit characters.

Fruit is harvested in the cool of early morning and immediately pressed, only the free run juices being utilised. After cold settling and racking to clarify, vinification is initiated. The fermenting juices are then transferred to fine grained French oak barrels, a portion of which are new, for completion. One component is selected to undergo a natural or wild fermentation another component is treated to malolactic which gives the wine greater complexity and flavour. Laira remains on yeast lees and is matured in barrel with weekly stirring of the lees conducted to give the wine a creamy texture and flavour. The individual parcels are assessed and assembled before filtration and bottling.

Pale straw gold with green hues. Perfumed nose displaying creamy peach and stone fruit aromas, guava and peach, complemented by some mineral notes, creamy butterscotch and cashew nut oak from barrel ferments and maturation. The fruit driven palate is complex, smooth and rounded with a balanced acid structure. It displays peach and nectarine primary fruit accompanied by creamy cashew nut characters derived from ageing on lees and malolactic. The finish is long with fine, lingering fruit flavours. A refreshing Chardonnay, brimming with approachability and poise, to mate with fine gourmandise, such as a baked walnut and tarragon crusted trout.

Jamiesons Run moderated the excess vine growth for this wine, maintaining the balance of fruit and leaf growth. Chardonnay was harvested during the cool of the night, crushed and gently pressed off the skins using an air-bag press. The juice was then racked and the ferment initiated in stainless steel before being transferred into the finest quality new and one-two year old French oak barriques to complete fermentation. After the short maturation the winemakers carefully selected barrels for the final blend to create a finished wine that was fine, elegant and subtle with delicate oak influence and malolatic fermentation character. Alcohol 14% pH 3.34 Acidity 6 g/L Sugar 1.33 g/L.

Winter rains and spring temperatures were average and resulted in a late budburst, followed by warm conditions that produced ideal flowering. The long cool maturation period that followed, produced intense flavours, aromatics and colours. Penley's style is based on the harmony of subtle, subdued oak with very good fruit, always been the objective in crafting this Chardonnay. Fermentation of a percentage of this wine in specially selected oak is essential, with a portion kept in a stainless steel tank. The oak adds dimension and structure to the wine, not overt and buttery notes. 14% Alcohol Acid 6.8g/L pH 3.37.

The colour is medium yellow with touches of grapey green. An aroma is emphasised by melon and grassy fruit with a hint of soft French oak. The flavours are soft and smooth with lingering melon fruits. The oak is subtle but discernible, enhancing the grape flavours, without overpowering them. This white wine shows complexity even though there has been no malolactic fermentation, even so the wine is soft but crisp, with the accent on fresh fruit characters, rather than buttery richness. The overall impression is one of soft, discernible fruit with a clean acid and subtle oak background. Complexity of flavours make this an excellent food wine.
