The Fowles family have been at the centre of Victoria's commerce and development since early settlement. Founders of Bendigo Bank and Fowles Auction Group, they also established the first Victorian winery ever to win Great Australian Shiraz Challenge. The Fowles brand have continued to deliver with the most celebrated editions and memorable vintages, drawing fruit from the pick of their Strathbogie vineyards to be aged in the luxury of completely new oak, the first choice for service alongside flavourful game recipes, suckling pork or lamb.

Fowles Wine own and operate a substantial acreage of vines in the Strathbogie Ranges, their two splendid estate vineyards, Billi and Upton Run, are source of the most decorated wines in the land. Shiraz is harvested March to April and vinified in an impressive suite of sweep arm fermenters at 26ËšC, to enhance colour and preserve the incredible fruit flavours, while extracting optimal tannins. Three different strains of yeast contribute unique characters and infuse layers of complexity. Upon completion, batches are filled to an extravagant selection of new French and American oak barrels for a year's maturion. A judicious dash of Dookie grown Viognier adds a beguiling apricot perfume lift.

Youthful red colour, purple hues. Aromas of plum, black and green pepper, graphite, apricots, rose petal and subtle oak. The palate is elegantly structured and brilliantly balanced, layers of ripe plum, chocolate and spice, over a length of meaty, velvet tannins, supported by the juicy turkish delights of Viognier and lightly fragrant, tobacco carob oak.

Euroa Creeks Reserve Shiraz
Goulburn
Available in cases of 6
Euroa Creeks is a hand crafted single vineyard Shiraz, only sixty cases of the inaugural vintage were available in Australia. The eight acres of vine are nourished by a number of creeks that have traditionally brought just enough water to make the land arable. In recent years the area has been drier than usual, vines have truly struggled and tonnages are at their lowest, but the grapes have been packed with flavour. Vintage 2006 was an almost perfect growing season and 110 cases of Reserve were produced. Vintage 2007 was totally wiped out by frost.

Exclusively Goulburn Shiraz, grown by Jo and Andrew Gall, vinified by David Lloyd, owner operator of Mornington's Eldridge Estate. Lloyd was keen to see what happens when a cool climate winemaker delves into warm climate Shiraz. Located a little east of the township of Euroa, the vineyard produces intensely flavoured grapes which are hand picked and crushed in the field over the course of several days. The batches of juices and skins are then brought back to the winery at Red Hill for fermentation, pressing, ageing and bottling. Treated to an extended maturation, Euroa Creek wines are aged in a selection of American and French oak barrels, a high proportion of which are always new.

Dark brooding red colour, plum and dark berry hues. An intensely flavoured and perfumed Shiraz in the Rhone style, rich red berry nose with a little cinnamon, vanillan and spice, flavours of plum which follow through to the palate. Euroa Creeks is always rich and powerful, endowed with the classic blackberry Shiraz characters, firm tanins and great length. Vintage 2006 claimed Gold Medal at the 2008 Great Australian Shiraz Challenge.
Keith Brien Old Vines Mataro
Goulburn
Available by the dozen
Vincenzo Conte immigrated to Australia in 1952, sowing Shiraz and Mataro vines on a property just outside of Shepparton. His son took over management of the precious low yielding vineyard until 2003, when the site came to the attention of a seasoned old salt with a deep penchant for small batch, Rhone varietal wines. Keith Brien makes old world styles, with a view to bottle development of each vintage before release. The powerful mouthfilling richness and velvet textures are complemented by a length of deep, fine tannins, the fruit of cosseted, unirrigated old vines.

Shiraz grapes are picked off the Vincenzo Conte block at Shepparton, precious old vines yielding a meagre 1.4 tonnes/acre. The gnarled old veterans have developed a natural affinity for the rugged terroirs and warmer climes of Goulburn. Fruit is crushed and treated to a spell of cold soak before traditional vinification. Batches are pressed off skins and held for a term on gross solids until completion of ferments and extended maceration, followed by transfer to a selection of seasoned French and American oak hogsheads for a course of malolactic and two years maturation. Bottled after racking, assemblage into the final wine and minimal filtration, two years after vintage.

Dark crimson red. Fragrant black bramble fruit notes followed by ribena plums, sticky black cherries seasoned by peppered anise and cocoa cedar oak. A concentration of fruit on the expansive palate, festive cakes and licorice spice, underpinned by earthiness and crisp, drying tannins. A Shiraz that evolves as it breathes, splendid alongside slow braised and corned brisket or gourmandize goat shepherds pie.
Keith Brien Vincenzo Block Mataro Shiraz
Goulburn
Available by the dozen
The flagship of the Keith Brien range, a precious parcel of old vines Mourverdre vinified alongside a choice harvest of Shiraz, all picked off an exquisite low yielding vineyard. Keith Brien has been consumed by a passion for obscure old sites, ever since a tour of duty amongst the vineyards of La Bourgogne in the 1970s. He treasures his time spent inspecting the old plantings and ripening of fruit, earmarking the pick of crop for an old fashioned vinification and extended term of age, albeit amazingly accessible to the discerning enthusiast at large.

When Keith Brien began nuturing the Vincenzo Conte vineyard back to health in 2003, the property required an extensive effort, new trellises were built and state of the art viticultural programs were introduced. Though the gnarled and twisted old vines clearly display their struggle for survival in the meagre soils, they have returned to yielding a harvest of the most extraordinary fruit with every vintage. Parcels of Mataro and Shiraz are crushed, pressed off skins and treated to a term of cold soak before a traditional vinification. Upon completion of ferments and extended maceration, batches are filled to a selection of seasoned and new French and American oak hogsheads for malolactic and two years maturation.

Deep blackish purple. Dark berry and plum perfumes, anise and cocoa are supported by an earthiness which compliments the brooding fruit. Tightly structured palate, a concentration of mouth filling, spicy fruit flavours, balanced by background oak and fine drying tannins. An excellent length of finish makes Keith Brien the ideal partner to succulent game or braised beef in red wine jus.
