The emergence of Balgownie Estate as a preminent winemaker in the 1970s led to the rapid expansion of the central goldfields wine growing region and was a significant player in the rebirth of the Victorian wine industry as a whole. In 1999, fine wine enthusiasts Des and Rod Forrester assumed proprietorship of Balgownie and set about updating the vineyards and winery. The Forresters embarked on a search for the idyllic Chardonnay and Pinot Noir site, eventually identifying a property in the Yarra Valley where they established seven hectares of closely managed vines. Crafted to Methode traditionelle, Balgownie Brut is rested on sediments before completing secondary fermentation in bottle. Alcohol 12.5%

Balgownie can rely on harvests of the finest Shiraz to craft wines of distinction and poise. The vineyard is planted to alluvial clay soils that are low in fertility but provide good moisture retention. The soils naturally limit yields and produce grapes displaying intensity and great depth of flavour. The dedicated team subscribe to the philosophy that the finest quality wines can only be determined in the vineyard. Viticultural management practices aim to strike a balance between vegetative growth and moderate yields. A backbone of richly flavoured Bendigo Shiraz is treated to a short maceration and co-vinified alongside parcels of Yarra Valley Pinot Noir, achieving a crisp sparkling wine with pink rose hue and lively effervescence.

Bright salmon pink with persistent, creamy rose coloured bead. Enticing aromas of fresh strawberry, light plum and cherries with a hint of rosewater and light spice. A delicate palate of fresh summer fruit follows, flavours of cherries and plum, a crisp wine with a touch of savouryness, accompanied by a fine mousse and lovely soft finish. Sparkling Shiraz is synonymous with Great Western, and contemporary tastes have presented a great opportunity for Great Western to refine the style. The winemaking team discovered that certain blocks yielded fruit which would lend themselves exceptionally well to sparkling Shiraz, forming a wine that spoke of place and was characteristic of Great Western. Grapes are picked early, inoculated and vinified in traditional fermenting vats, without receiving any oak treatment whatsoeverl, achieving a wine with medium body which retains freshness and intensity even as it ages. The goal is to ensure that the finished wine defines Great Western, retains good balance, elegance and refinement. Alcohol 14.5%

Blue Pyrenees Midnight Cuvee
Pyrenees
The production of Methode traditionelle sparkling wines has been an integral part of the winemaking at Blue Pyrenees for many years. Established in 1963 by the Champagne houses of Krug and Charles Heidsieck, an adherence to the stylish French influence of the founders is central. In 1992, the team at Blue Pyrenees decided to experiment with hand picking fruit in the middle of the night, under floodlights, to optimize fruit condition and temperature. The results were amazing, crisp and clean juices of outstanding quality. The Midnight Cuvee was born.

Although hand picked fruit is often most desirable for the production of premium quality juices, day time temperatures in Australia can mean that hand picked fruit is often quite warm when received into the press after a day's picking. Nowadays the Blue Pyrenees team select the best fruit parcels, whilst still on the vine, to be separated out from the rest and picked at night by hand to generate the juices that will become the Midnight Cuvee. Although very laborious and time consuming, the rewards are evident in the glass. The Blue Pyrenees Estate Midnight Cuvee is made entirely from estate grown fruit, predominantly Chardonnay with a touch of Pinot Noir. Approx 12.7%

All grapes are gently whole bunch pressed to minimise contact between the juice, the skins, and the seeds. 100% of the fruit underwent malolactic, following vinification, the component wines are assessed and a final Cuvée is determined. The assembled wine is then treated to a secondary fermentation in the bottle. Prosecco grapes thrive in cool growing conditions, inspiring the Brown Brothers team to plant vines on the chilly slopes of their Banksdale property, 485 metres above sea level in the upper reaches of the King Valley. The fruit is picked later and at a slightly higher baume, to deliver a soft and well rounded, approachable young wine. Although the wine is fermented to dry, the extra time fruit spends hanging on the vine allows grapes to develop more intense flavours and aromas. After primary vinification the wine was fermented, Metodo Italiano or Charmat method, in tank to five atmospheres of pressure and bottled promptly to retain the bubbles, achieving an easier to enjoy style of sparkling. Alcohol 11.5%
