Crittenden Estate Pinot Noir 2012
Mornington
Available by the case dozen only
As a key figure in the establishment of Mornington viticulture, Garry Crittenden was instrumental in forging for the Peninsula the reputation as a distinguished producer of distinctive, regional wines. From the outset, Crittenden recognized the area's climatic suitability to Pinot Noir, exploiting it through meticulous land management and sophisticated vinification techniques. Fashioned from a mix of Pinot Noir clones, including 114 and 115, MV6, D2V5 and D5V12, all grapes are hand picked off the Crittenden property at 25 Harrisons Rd Dromana.

Grapes are immediately destemmed to small open fermenters without crushing. Juices and musts, pulp, skins and seeds are sent to fermenters via a heat exchanger, the temperature is lowered from ambient to approximately 7°C. A protective CO2 cover is maintained and the must is cold soaked for four or five days prior to vinification. Half the fermenters are allowed a spontaneous wild yeast ferment, the balance is inoculated with a choice red wine yeast. Ferments are allowed to peak at 32°C, the wine is pressed off skins at dryness into a mixture of new and prior use French 225 litre oak barriques. Malolactic commences naturally and is complete by mid winter.

Bright scarlet hue. Crittenden walks the middle ground between being fruit driven and and supply elegant, yet complex and soundly structured. Each clone contributes unique characters. There is a faint but appealing stalky character which has nothing to do with stems in the ferment, speaking more about the smaller size of hand picked berries. The texture is rich and structured, soft tannins and bright cherry fruit resolve on a good acid finish.

Crittenden Geppetto Pinot Gris 2009
Murray
A leading figure in the Australian wine industry for decades, Garry Crittenden was founder and chief winemaker of the renowned Dromana Estate, now a publicly listed company. Today he turns his efforts to hand crafting small amounts of the finest, stylized wines. One of Crittenden's pre-occupations is with the abstruse varietals. He has developed a flair for engineering the Pinot Gris grape into both the Italianate and Franco genres. Geppetto presents Pinot Gris under an Alsation light, with rich aromas and a complex, fruit filled palate.

From good vineyards in Victoria's Murray Valley. To ensure low phenolics, both in the colour and on the palate, the hand harvested fruit is quickly whole bunch pressed, without de-stemming, into tanks where enzymes can assist settling of the solids, which takes place over forty eight hours. The crystal clear juice is then transferred to a temperature controlled tank and inoculated with yeast chosen to impart texture and mouthfeel. The choice is to confer a Pinot Gris character to the wine as distinct from the Pinot Grigio style. The long slow ferment takes place at 14°C and is terminated to retain the slightest touch of residual sugar, a feature more in keeping with the French style of Pinot Gris wines. Alcohol 13.5%

Light straw colour. Fresh aromas of stonefruit and musk are evident on the nose. The palate is rich and generous with evident acidity acting as a counterbalance to the intentionally retained residual sugar, helping to provide the wine with great length and intensity.
Geppetto Pinot Noir 2009

Over the years that Crittenden has been involved in managing vineyards and making wine, some enduring relationships have developed with growers. Geppetto is a backbone of Mornington fruit with a component from good sites around Patterson Lakes.

Grapes are hand harvested and immediately destemmed to small open fermenters without crushing. The must (juice, pulp, skins and seeds) is transferred via a heat exchanger, lowering the ambient temperature to 7°C. A protective CO2 cover is maintaied and the must cold soaked for four to five days prior to inoculation. Half of the fermenters are allowed a spontaneous ferment, the balance is inoculated with a select red wine yeast. The ferment temperature is allowed to reach 32°C whereupon the wine is pressed off skins at dryness to a mixture of one, two and three year old 225 litre French oak barriques for ten months ageing. The malolactic ferment occurs naturally and is complete by late winter. Alcohol 13.5%

Bright scarlet colour. Characters of light floral with cherry, red fruits, currant and supple oak. Essentially made in the same way as the estate Pinot Noir, there are two significant differences. The clonal composition is smaller, just MV6 and D2V5, delivering a less complex wine, and no new wood for the maturation process. Geppetto is aged in seasoned oak, the style is intentionally made for early enjoyment, showing fresh fruit and low tannins but still retaining a lively acidity. Best enjoyed with your favourite lamb or duck.
Pinnocchio Sangiovese 2011
Heathcote
Available by the case dozen only
Pinocchio is where Garry and Rollo Crittenden have a little more fun than usual. Over the years, the awareness of Sangiovese has expanded as wine lovers begin to discover how different the Italian reds are from French varietals, enthusiasts have come to appreciate the inherent synergy between Sangiovese and food. The distinguishing character of Sangiovese should be one of savouryness and refreshing acids around an impression of morello cherry. Pinocchio will appeal to the adventurous and to red wine adherents who are looking for something new.

Crittenden's growers operate the best sites for Sangiovese in Heathcote. Grapes are completely hand harvested and transported to the winery for immediate destemming and crushing. The juices are inoculated in open fermenters and hand plunged three times a day during the early stages, followed by twice daily plunges as the wine approaches completion. Pinocchio is pressed off skins at full dryness to a mixture of three and four year old barrels. Crittenden avoids the use of new wood for Italian varieties as the sweet, sappy oak characters detract from the natural structure and savouryness of fruit. After ten months maturation Pinocchio is treated to a filtration before bottling. Alcohol 13.5%

Bright red colour. Delicate violet fragrances, orange peel and plum nose. Spiced leather, cherry and blueberry flavours on a medium bodied structure supported by brisk, arid tannins and framed by judicious background oak. There is no sweetness on the mid palate such as you might expect from fruity styles of red wine. The finish is admirably long and tart with a refreshing spine of acidity over firm drying tannins. Goes so well with many Italian dishes.
Pinocchio Arneis 2010
King Yarra Mornington
Available by case dozen only
Garry and Rollo Crittenden are dedicated vignerons who channel their efforts into producing small batches of fine wine. Arneis is a rare varietal originating from Piedmonte in northwest Italy which came close to extinction. Crittenden was the first commercially released Arneis made in the southern hemisphere. A backbone of fruit is sourced from good vineyards in the King Valley which is a region endowed with a climate almost identical to Piedmont. An addition from Crittenden's site in Mornington contributes vibrant fruit characters and aromatics.

Sourced from two vineyards under contract in the King Valley, the remainder from the Crittenden property at Dromana, all parcels are picked by hand. Grapes are transported to the Crittenden wineworks where they are treated as whole bunches through an airbag press. Juices are settled without enzymes for twenty four hours and racked to controlled fermenters. Vinifications are limited to moderate temperatures of 16°C for a period of nineteen days until completely dry. The fermented wine then spent some time in tank on lees to impart texture. There is no wood ageing or malolactic ferment. After three months Pinocchio is filtered ready for bottling. Alcohol 12.5%

Pale straw hue. True to the Piedmontese style, Pinocchio shows characters of pear, stonefruits and fresh apple on the nose. Crisp and fresh with a mouthfilling palate of juicy acidity, flavours of peaches and pear, mineral and flint with a crunchy dry finish. To be enjoyed in its youth, Arneis really comes into its own with good food, particularly with authentic Italiano such as cuttlefish or white bait.
The Mornington Peninsula was scarcely associated with wine when Garry planted his first vines at Dromana in 1982.

As a key figure in the region's pioneering wave of vignerons, Garry was instrumental in forging for the Peninsula a reputation as a distinguished producer of cool climate wine.

From the outset, he recognized the area's climatic suitability to the Burgundian varieties of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, and set about confirming it through meticulous viticulture and sophisticated winemaking techniques.

Consistent with the reputation of Dromana Estate's wines was its development into one of the Peninsula's leading wine tourism destinations, where stylish, handcrafted wines were matched with good food and warm, generous hospitality.

Over the years, as the stature of the wines bottled under the Dromana Estate label continued to grow, so too did the Peninsula's profile as one of Australia's pre-eminent cool climate wine regions.

And with a thirst for exploring new horizons and charting unexplored territory, Garry also went on to create two other brands drawing on grapes from other premium regions of Victoria. The first, Schinus, remains a favourite among consumers in Australia and abroad. Garry also helped to pioneer the production of Italian varietals in Australia with his ground-breaking Garry Crittenden I range.

At a time when awareness of such varieties was barely at an embryonic stage, he helped to bring about an increasingly widespread appreciation of varietals such as Sangiovese, Nebbiolo, Barbera and Arneis.

Garry Crittenden has returned as a dedicated small scale vigneron with an exciting new series of handcrafted wines. A leading figure in the Australian wine industry for 25 years, Garry was the founder and chief winemaker of the renowned Dromana Estate, now a publicly-listed company.

Today, his efforts are being channeled into producing small batches of wines that elegantly and emphatically speak of their varietal and geographic provenance, under the Crittenden, Schinus, Pinocchio and Geppetto ranges.

The property formerly known as Dromana Estate is now the base for Garry's new winemaking operations, as well as home to Stillwater Restaurant, owned and operated by acclaimed chef Zac Poulier.

Garry's portfolio now spans estate-grown, cool climate wines of Burgundian origin, new and exciting Italian varietals and other regional classics from both the Mornington Pensinsula and further afield from some of north-east Victoria's finest vineyards.
