Delatite Dead Mans Hill Gewurtztraminer 2011
Mansfield
Gewurtztraminer was one of Delatite's first plantings, it has continued to deliver the most memorable, award winning vintages. Deadman's Hill is widely regarded as the benchmark in Australia, the first Traminer ever to be selected for Qantas International First Class. The Deadman's Hill site is a hundred metres higher than the other vineyards at Delatite and has been dry grown for most of it's life. It was the first part of the vineyard to be converted to BioDynamics and like all other blocks at Delatite, it is completely pruned and picked by hand.

The steep ironstone slopes and crisp mountain air at Delatite provide an idyllic mesoclime for the spicey Gewurtztraminer, which demands slow ripening to develop fully. Harvest takes place between mid March and early April. Hand pruned, hand picked and patiently sorted by the winemakers themselves, grapes are crushed, the must is chilled and left in the press to cold soak for a few hours. This brief extraction infuses the delightful, enticing Traminer characters of musk sticks, rose petals, lychee and turkish delights. Juices are then allowed to warm and natural yeasts initiate ferments. Upon completion, the wine is left on lees in tank over a period of four months to enhance and lengthen the palate. Alcohol 12.0%

A straw coloured wine. The aromas are a melange of cinnamon and clove, rose petal, lychee and musk which follow through to the richly flavoured palate. Flavours of hazelnut and toast, cardammon, lychee and ginger biscuit, clove and turkish delights. Decidedly Traminer, a wine which deserves to be appreciated today alongside crustacea, Asian recipes and all spiced faire.
Gapsted Victorian Alps Muscato
King Valley
Available by the case dozen only
Inspired by the lush fruitiness of the Italian classic Moscato d'Asti, Gapsted is a blend in name and style, of Traminer Musqué and Frontignac muscato bianco. The Traminer component is sourced from Whitlands Vineyard, grown to the higher, elevated aspects of King Valley, picked early to retain freshness and lively fruit character. This slightly spritzy Muscato drinks well on its own but also suits a range of lighter desserts such as pannacotta, soft cheese, dried fruits and fresh peaches.

The vibrant Alpine characters of Traminer are a result of cool breezes and snow run off in spring, which provides abundant clear, fresh water to the Whitlands vineyard. The cool ripening conditions prevent high levels of transpiration, allowing the Traminer to retain natural acids, sugars and lifted fruit flavours. A very slow, and cold controlled ferment at seven degrees for five weeks, ensured retains fresh crisp varietal characters. Fermentation is stopped at six degrees of baumé by chilling the wine and fining. Some naturally occurring CO2 is retained in the wine for a light frizzante style. Approx 7.0%

Bright pale straw colour. Exotic florals with hints of middle eastern spice. Aromas of rose petal and spicey musk, pear and apple, turkish delight and hazelnut, coconut and vanilla all tantalise with their bouquet. The palate is alive with fresh peaches and grape, an intensely flavoured wine with chinese five spice and sweetly floral characters, balanced against relaxed citrus notes, generous and poised. Sweet but not cloying, light fizz tickles the palate and finishes refreshingly clean, with a superb lingering fruit finish. A simply delicious wine in lighter, pleasant styling, rounded out with hints of tropical lime and honey. Well suited to savoury dishes such as rich patés or satay chicken.

Pewsey Vale once succumbed to the fate of so many of Australia's early vineyards, falling into disuse as a result of severe economic hardship. The site's potential was rediscovered at a time when only the history books recorded any existence of the original plantings. The long ripening periods at such altitudes develop unique, consistent flavour profiles, which are known today as classic Pewsey Vale. The winemaking is simple and natural, hand picked grapes are whole bunch pressed directly to older oak barrels for fermentation by indigenous yeasts. The batches remain in barrel for up to four months whilst being treated to regular batonnage before assembling components into the final wine. Alcohol 12.0%

A clear, pale straw appearance. With a slight, spicy cinnamon and rose water fragrance on the nose, the flavours of Pewsey Vale follow, full of oranges and lime, lychee and exotic perfumed florals. The palate is fine but unexpectedly textured, finishing long and fresh.
