Merv and Judy Lange are true pioneers of the Frankland River winegrowing region, they planted their first single hectare of Alkoomi vines by hand, way back in 1971. Today, Alkoomi is one of the largest family owned labels in Western Australia. The balmy mesoclimes which surround their salubrious Frankland River property are so similar to those of Bordeaux, heaven sent for the construct of intensely aromatic Cabernet Merlot wines with magnificent structure, elegance and charm.

From their initial planting, Alkoomi's area under vine expanded throughout the 1980s and 1990s, growth of vineyards has continued steadily, without sacrificing the naturally low yields which produce wines with a concentration of good flavour. Vines are all pruned by hand, harvesting occurs in the cool of morning, usually starting just after midnight to ensure grapes arrive at the winery in top condition. Exclusively estate grown Merlot and Cabernet are picked at healthy levels of Baume off several individual blocks. Parcels are treated to three days of cold soak for extraction of good colour and fine tannin, followed by a course of ferments and a year's maturation in French oak.
 
Deep red with crimson hues. Bouquets of mulberry, blood plum and cassis meld with attractive crushed violets, notes of mint and spicy oak. Medium to full bodied palate, displaying a complex blend of flavours reminiscent of dark plums and cassis. Fine grained satin textured tannins lead to a lingering finish of cassis fruit supported by lovely spiced oak. Drinking well right now with a rich tomato pasta or juicy steak.
Ashbrook Estate Cabernet Merlot

Three quarters Wilyabrup Old Cab and Young Cab clones, transplanted from the original Houghton Source Block in Valley Swan, the balance of Merlot, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. Selectively hand picked at vintage over the course of a month, gently plunged in open fermenters and matured two years in French oak barriques. A fully ripe red berry bouquet, cherry plum fruit leather and hints of cassis saturate the palate, fine grained tannins in support of a succulent, velvety mouthfeel, super premium oak imparts elegance, complexity and fragrant spice.

Ashbrook Estate Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon

Predominantly old vines Old Houghton clone Cabernet Sauvignon, hand picked off the original 1976 estate block at Wilyabrup. Bursting with red and black currant notes, vivid dark cherries and plum, leatheryness and violet, its comely perfumes of anise and cigar box precede a flood of fruit on the elegantly spiced oak palate, all supported by silky smooth, fine grained tannins. A wine of amazingly disciplined power and astonishing length, a measure of Merlot, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc introduces wonderful complexity.

Brookland Valley is the only company that controls vineyards over the length and breadth of Margaret River. Harvets from the north are invariably sweeter and fuller in flavour, particularly the Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Grapes are all hand picked and sorted into open top fermenters for vinification through wild indigenous yeast over the course of ten days. Batches are gently pressed off and basket pressed for completion of malolactic, followed by a year's maturation in a selection of new and seasoned French oak.
 
Deep plum colour. Ripe and intense cassis and spice aromas over hints of tobacco leaf and leather, a light leafiness balanced out by fine French oak. Classic Margaret River characters of cassis, ripe plum and dried fruit flavours are complemented by hints of dark chocolate. Structure, fine tannins and oak spice provide structure, complexity and length to the palate.

Parcels of Cabernet and Merlot are collated on the basis of slow, even ripening, clean and expressive, optimal flavour development without disease pressure. Fruit is harvested at optimum ripeness and held for a term of cold maceration. Twelve days of ferment are treated to daily pumpovers and juice aeration, extracting excellent colour and tannin. Batches are pressed off skins for malolactic and a year's maturation in a selection of seasoned and new French oak, to be followed by assemblage into the final wine, with a view to achieving a soft and elegant style of Great Southern Cabernet Merlot.
 
Dark, rich plum colour, vibrant purple hue. Intense berry fruits, lifted spice and savoury oak. An initial burst of dense, dark ripe berries, subtle plum characters carry through the palate, combining subtle toasted oak, powdery tannins and a long, rich, fruit filled finish. Perfect with lamb, fusions of pork and veal medleys or piquant eggplant recipes.

The fortuitous vines grown to Pemberton's balmy climes, are encouraged by the lofty karri tree blossoms to yield harvests of the cleanest, disease free Merlot grapes, intense with ripe cherry plum flavours and infused by the piquant cologne of local gums. Pemberton was established to viticulture in 1982, its relative youth as a winegrowing region has a yielded a succession of the most outstanding vintages. Castelli's strict regimen of close canopy management achieves harvests brimming with fully ripenend flavours. Fruit is crushed and held for a term of cold soak, inoculated to yeast strains F15 and FX10, followed by a rather warm vinification for a fortnight on skins at temperatures of 25°C to 30°C. Ferments are treated to pump overs twice daily, gentle tannin extractions and a course or two of rack returns. Upon completion, batches are transferred to a selection of seasoned and new French oak barriques for a judicious spell of maturation.
Clairault Margaret River Cabernet Merlot

Clairault Estate is situated approximately ten kilometres south of Yallingup, within the superior Wilyabrup dress circle of Margaret River. The property contains four dams, forty hectares of grazing land and eighty of remnant bush. The vineyard itself has been cultivated with a commitment to local flora and fauna, it yields harvests of small but intensely flavoured grapes. Merlot and Petit Verdot are assembled around a solid backbone of Cabernet Sauvignon, a stately wine of penetrating bramble fruit characters and refined, tensile tannins.

Bunches of Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are de-stemmed and each berry is split, to ensure minimal degradation and encourage fresh, clean flavours. Merlot is crushed to fully expose the delicate flesh, for a more refined and elegant textural development. A fortnight of cool, gentle vinification on skins, allows for slower, more controlled extractions of tannin and flavour. Ferments are pumped over thrice daily over the course of a fortnight and judiciously backed off as the juices evolve into wine. Upon completion, batches are gently pressed into a selection of French oak barriques for ten months maturation, followed by clarification and the final assemblage.
 
Bright garnet colour. A compelling bouquet of vibrant cherry skin and dark berry characters , mintiness, dried herb and vanilla. A bold palate driven by blackberry and mocha oak, fleshy plum sweetness followed by a herbal savoury length. The tannins are fine grained, almost silky in texture, in fine balance before a dark chocolate allspice finish. Match with lamb, steak or eggplant, a superb accompaniement to rare, gamey duck.

Grapes for Diana Madeline are grown to the most fastidious biodynamic farming principles, crucial for optimising quality of fruit and intensity of flavour while infusing the wine with velvety structure and ultra high quality tannins. The vines were originally planted to granitic soils in the central Willyabrup subregionb by Di Cullen in 1971, the meagre yields of two tons per acre sublimate into harvests of the most concentrated fruit. Grapes are picked at baumes ranging from 12˚ to 13.8˚, gently handled and sorted with great care. Varietal components are inoculated to natural yeasts and separately vinified. The finished wine was matured fourteen months in a selection of the highest quality French oak barriques.
 
Very concentrated deep red colour. Already very complex, clean and rich blackcurrant aromas with a touch of blackberry and vanillin oak. The complex amalgam of liquorice, fennel and multi fruit flavours, including plums and mulberry, red currants and blueberry, are backed by just the right amount of clean oak. Long and persistent. The extraordinary depth of flavour reflects the outstanding quality of vintage 2007. Complete, elegant and refined, a wine of exceptional length, an outstanding Cabernet.
