Campo di Sasso Insoglio del Cinghiale IGT
Tuscany
Available in cartons of six
From fruit grown to three different plots west of the road that joins Bibbona to Bolgheri. Soils are sandier and climes slightly warmer during the summer months, conditions which are ideal for growing Syrah, which accounts for a third of Insoglio del Cinghiale. It's peppery character makes it perfect with game, such as the local wild boar after which it is named.

The entry level wine from Campo di Sasso at Bibbona, part of the greater Tenuta di Biserno estate which stretches between Bibbona and Bolgheri in Tuscany's west. All harvesting is selectively done by hand into small 15 kg crates. Grapes are strictly sorted again upon arrival to the Biserna wineworks, de-stemmed and gently crushed. The musts are vinified over a course of three weeks at 28C. A tenth of the batches are treated to malolactic in oak barrels, the remainder in fermenters. Components are matured four months in a selection of new and second use French oak barriques, followed by the final assemblage, botttling and a further three months ageing before release. Alcohol 14.5%

Intense ruby red in colour with flecks of purple. The nose is intensely fruity with a hint of spicy oak and liquorice. The palate is balanced and harmonious, with the rich fruit being balanced by ripe, round tannins.

Tenuta di Biserno is in western Tuscany, along the Upper Maremma, among the hills of Bibbona, bordering the DOC Bolgheri. The vineyards of Bibbona and Bolgheri relate to each other very much in the manner of Saint Emilion and Pomerol. A statuesque cepage of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot, Il Pino di Biserno is the second growth of Tenuta Biserno.

The vines at Tenuta di Biserno are grown to some very special soils, complex silts, alluvial sands, a high percentage of clay and a conglomerate rich in minerals, recognizable upon tasting the wines. As with the established practices of neighboring Bolgheri DOC, Bordeaux varietals were planted with a view to exploiting the unique soils which are very akin to those found in the Medoc. Fruit is vinified for three to four weeks at 28C, followed by a course of malolactic in a combination of barrels and tank. The wines are matured twelve months in a selection of prior use French oak barriques and vats, assembled, bottled and aged for another six months before release.

Intense, bright ruby red. Ripe, soft fruit aromatics, spicy notes, eucalyptus and Mediterranean maquis. A fruit filled palate, ripe acids and supple oak are supported by fine, ripe tannins before a long, elegant finish. The relatively high percentage of Petit Verdot has surprised many wine professionals for it's contribution to the overall structure and balance.

The panorama from the slopes of Tenuta di Biserno is breathtaking, with views down to the Tyrrhenian Sea all the way to Corsica. Lodovico and Piero Antinori surveyed the land and were struck by the similarities of it's soils with those of Bordeaux. They were inspired to plant Cabernet Franc, the dominant component in Pino di Biserno, joined by varying percentages of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot. A super fine Tuscan with remarkable early drinkability which continues to enthuse the wine industry press with each new release.
