Clare Valley
Available by the case dozen only
Pure Clare Valley Chardonnay, some of it from blocks which can trace a lineage back to the original Quelltaler vineyards, the first Aussie wine ever formally served to the UK House of Commons! Annie's Lane recounts the legend of a local lass who operated a mobile canteen in the Clare Valley, providing sandwiches and warm drinks to harvesters and pruners working in the vineyard.

Annie's Lane cuts through one of the Clare Valley's first vineyards. To this day, the Annie's Lane team retain some of the most distinguished sites and secure the best quality grapes. Harvests of Chardonnay are sourced which can weigh in with the smallest berries, show great colour and offer the biggest flavours. Some thinning of the vines during the growing season keeps the fruit flavours and palate weight developing. Following the crush, unclarified juices are left to settle and racked off lees before a portion is fermented in oak, combining the bright fruit driven characters with a touch of nutty, leesy complexity. The remainder is tank vinified, slow and cool, retaining the vital regional charm of Clare Valley Chardonnay.

Pale straw with green hues. Aromas of peach and cinnamon develop into lively varietal flavours across the soft and full flavoured palate. Citrus notes, grapefruit and integrated background oak characters create complexity. Enjoy Annies Lane with Alfresco cuisine and chicken pasta recipes.

The legend of Annie's Lane recounts the tale of Annie Wayman, whose horse and cart got bogged next to one of the area's best vineyards, giving birth to the famous Annie's Lane. Batches of the finest Riesling grapes come out of the most prized vineyards around the Watervale and Polish Hill River areas where the cooler ripening period and extraordinary slate riddled soils combine to create an unmistakable stamp of Clare Valley. The grapes are crushed and drained as only the delicate free run juices are retained. After a period of cold settling to retain freshness and distinct varietal characters, the wine is treated to a cool temperature controlled vinification and prompt bottling after a brief repose.

Pale in color with vibrant green hues. Annie's Lane has an intensely perfumed nose displaying crisp lemon and lime aromas. There are elegant expressions in the heady bouquet, minerals and citrus, chalk, persimmon and spring flowers. Lifted lime characters, a framework of fine fruit and creamy textures, bright tangy flavours show finesse and elegance with balanced crisp acidity to the lingering finish. A refreshing white that offers pleasurable fruit combined with softness and a good pinch of genuine Clare Valley regionality.

Early years saw the Stanley Flat region of Clare Valley utilised as market gardens due to fertile alluvial soils. This naturally progressed into fruit production and ultimately grapes. Many vineyards still harbour the equipment of years gone by and occasionally significant landmarks in the form of drying racks and sorting sheds stand out in the landscape. The true treasures of the region are vines that have lasted the changes and challenges of nature and agriculture. Small pockets of vineyards and orchards dating back as far as the 1860s are still in production today. Riesling grapes are harvested and crushed followed by inoculation with select yeasts before completion of temperature fermention in tank. Alcohol 11.7%

A pale, light straw green in colour. A complex, alluring bouquet with a mix of enticing citrus, floral and apple blossom aromas. Fresh and lively palate, excellent acid line and lingering flavours. Cardinham is exquisite for its substantive lemon and lime palate, luxurious light chalky character and exceptional balance. An exeplary finish, long, clean and lingering finish.

Grapes are sourced from the Chapel Hill Kangarilla property, located along the foot hills at the base of Mt Lofty Ranges. The gully winds and higher altitude create a cooler mesoclimate than the McLaren Vale floor. Some vines are fully shaded and picked early for grassy herbaceous characters. Another portion is harvested at medium ripeness for it's tropical fruit salad flavours and the balance is left to hang until full bloom of honeysuckle is achieved. The wine is bottled immediately after fermentation to protect this unique flavour profile. Grapes are cold pressed and racked, free run juices are cool fermented in tank without barrel ageing, completely unwooded and unoaked. Alcohol 12.5%

Deep straw green, a richly hued wine. Expressions of kaffir lime leaf, gooseberry and honeysuckle, guava and passionfruit. Verdelho's luscious, generous and vibrant flavour renders it perfectly compatible to a myriad of cuisines and occasions. A consequence of the phased harvesting, Chapel Hill displays an intriguing array of flavours, complex stonefruits and buttered toast, the characteristic honey tones continue to soften demonstrably. A flavoursome luncheon white that's equally comfortable alongside robust foods like stir fries, chilli or crispy pork.

An assemblage of Chardonnay grown to choice McLaren Vale vineyards which are the source to some of the region's most distinguished wines. Classic and traditional vinification techniques were employed to retain the character of the superior quality fruit and to achieve elegance in the final wine. Whole bunches were transferred through an air bag press which gently breaks the grapes, allowing the juices to run freely, while harsh tannins are not released. Treated to inoculation and fermentation in a combination of French oak barriques and enriched by a regular lees stirring, leading to a full flavoured wine of great depth, a luxurious mouthfeel and abundant complexity.

Their efforts have been ranked within the top ten Chenin Blancs of the world at Rendez Vous du Chenin Competition in France, no mean feat for an Australian. The soils at Coriole are mostly Terra rossa, red brown earths over limestone. Another part of the vineyard is endowed with red earth ironstones, the oldest block, established in 1920 is planted to deep clays. The drier than normal summers put a greater importance on land management and careful fruit selection throughout the vineyards and all during the vinification process. Alcohol 12.5%

Crabtree Watervale Riesling 2006
Clare Valley
Crabtree is quite small, very much a boutique operation so far as production is concerned. The annual crush is a mere hundred tonnes, the tiny winery is at full capacity every vintage, and the wines are very limited in production. The cellar door is heritage listed and dates back to 1849 when the Clare Valley was first settled. Adolf Glaetzer was largely responsible for the planting of the vineyards as they exist today. Best known for his fresh fruit and vegetables, his descendants have made the Glaetzer name synonymous with Australian winemaking.

The Crabtree site has been planted to vines for well over a century. Although the original plantings have long since gone, most of the current vines are quite mature. The Riesling are over thirty years of age, very low yielding and are essentially dry grown, although most of the vineyards do have drip irrigation lines to ensure the vines do not suffer from too much water stress. Growing conditions this year were perfect, with good winter and spring rains, a moderately cool summer and a warm concentrated vintage, the quality of the Riesling in particular was excellent. Grapes were treated to a traditional vinification, portions were whole bunch pressed to bring length and finesse without sacrificing flavour. Alcohol 12.5%

Light pale straw with a strong green hue. Exhibiting lovely young green lime characters and lemongrass on the bouquet, lifted citrus and tropical fruits. The aroma is pleasant, a complex fusion of flowers, citrus and fresh apple, which carry through the big flavoursome palate. Expressions of lime and citrus, ginger and minerality. An exquisite wine with good structure, fresh and crisp with outstanding length, lingering and long with mouth watering acidity. The flavour and mouthfeel are perhaps more delicate than those of some of its predecessors – at least, on first impressions. However, the wine builds to a long, strong and clean finish, which lingers long after the wine has left the mouth. A classic Clare Valley Riesling.
Crabtree Watervale Riesling 2012
Clare Valley
Available by the case dozen only
The Clare Valley is especially known for Riesling, many of its finest vineyards are at Watervale. This distinguished hamlet has a population of only two hundred and fifty, a single shop and one garage, a pub and a school, a library, two churches and five renowned wineries. Like some of the world's great wine growing appellations, Watervale has a name and international reputation that belies its tiny size.

There is a conjunction of unique and distinctive soils at Watervale, loam on limestone or loam on shale, all well-draining and enhanced by a favourable climate, warmth, sunshine and cool nights. The Crabtree team have a long history and experience with Riesling, growing it in the vineyard and handling it in the winery. A key strategy to formulating this wine is to pick and ferment all the Riesling blocks separately. Thirteen individual ferments provide the team with intimate insights into each block's flavour profile and unique terroir characteristics. The best free run juices are identified and cold fermented to dry. The finest of these batches are set aside for inclusion into the final wine.

Pale straw with green hues. Expressing all the requisite Watervale florals on the bouquet, lemon, fresh pineapples and pear. A punchy, layered grapefruit and citrus spice palate coats the mouth, finishing long, crisp and dry. A splendid rendering of luscious Watervale Riesling.
dArenberg Hermit Crab Marsanne Viognier 2011
McLaren Vale
Available by the case dozen only
The close proximity of d'Arenberg's vineyards to Gulf St. Vincent means the grapes can be stimulated by gently cooling maritime breezes. Much of McLaren Vale is planted to free draining soils underlaid by limestone, formed by the calcareous remains of local marine fauna. One such creature was the Hermit Crab, a reclusive little crustacean that to this day inhabits the cast off shells of others. McLaren Vale's first ever Marsanne Viognier is named Hermit as a reference to the region in France where the Marsanne grape dominates white wines.

At vintage time, Chester Osborn chooses when to pick the fruit by walking the vineyard rows and tasting grapes. Parcels of Viognier and Marsanne are crushed and settled in tank before being treated to a gentle basket pressing which ensures the soft extraction of delicate but defined fruit characters of each grape. The Viognier and Marsanne components receive a similar vinification but are handled separately until the final stages. Fermentations are long and moderately cool to retain fresh fruit flavour. A small percentage of the Viognier is fermented in aged French and American oak barrels to add mouth feel and support the Viognier tannins. Alcohol 13.4%

Brilliant colour with light tints. Subtle floral nose, characteristic stone fruits, apricot, peach and nectarine with sweet spice. Lovely palate weight, packed with complexity. Opens with stone fruits and citrus, underpinned by candied ginger and clove spice. Builds nicely with a linear citrus acidity running throughout. The flavours linger on a savoury edge of pistachio nut and a twist of flowery fruit tannins adding textural interest. A complex wine that retains focus and provides versatility when matching to food.
dArenberg Money Spider Roussanne 2011
McLaren Vale
Available by the case dozen only
dArenberg planted McLaren Vale's first Viognier, Marsanne and Roussanne. The first crop was found to be covered in a sea of tiny Money Spiders Erigoninae. Popular belief is that kindness to these active little creatures will bring good luck, hopefully in the form of money. Being nature lovers and slightly superstitious, the staff refrained from sending spiders to their death. Hence the first Roussanne was not released until the following year by which time Money Spiders had learned their lesson and moved to bushland surrounding the vines.

dArenberg is one of the last remaining wineries to basket press their wines. This gentle method of squeezing juice protects the delicate white grapes. The winemaking processes of the past have been maintained, capturing the unique small batch character and the true expression of McLaren Vale. Tasting the Rousanne in the vineyard, Chester Osborn chooses to pick when grapes are fully ripe to encourage good varietal stone fruit flavours. At the winery, grapes are passed through the gentle Demoisy rubber tooth crusher before being basket pressed. Fermentations are long and moderately cool to retain fruit characters. Only free run juices are used for the final wine, finished without any malolactic.

A brilliant mid straw colour. Floral nose, expressive with orange blossom and honeysuckle alongside exotic tropical flavours of paw paw and fig, a hint of gingerbread in the background. Initially the palate is fresh and tight with lemon and lime characters dominating. It opens to ripe apple, white nectarine stone and creamy pine nuts, filling the mouth with complexity. The palate has good weight with lively acidity and mineral notes lingering.
dArenberg Olive Grove Chardonnay 2011
McLaren
Available by the case dozen only
You'll see plenty of olive trees alongside the d'Arenberg roadsides, flourishing around the vines. McLaren Vale is littered with olive groves which were planted by the first settlers. While neighbouring table grape growers consider olive trees a nuisance, local winemakers are thankful for the bittersweet nuances which the tiny green stonefruits impart to the wine. Chester Osborn determines the critical time of picking his Chardonnay, which is treated to wild ferments and lees stirring, for a rich textural wine with savoury aromas and good palate complexity.

Juice are gently extracted from grapes to retain the delicate Chardonnay characters. Under the insistence of chief winemaker Chester Osborn, fruit parcels are all kept separate, and once crushed, free run juices are cold soaked on skins at 2°C for up to twenty hours prior to basket pressing. A third of the total wine is fermented on its full solids, another component is barrel fermented for a range of periods between four weeks and several months in a mix of French and American oak. The balance is vinified in tank to retain fresh fruit characters and bright acidity. Once fermentations are complete, the wines are assembled and bottled fresh to retain vibrancy of varietal fruit characters. Alcohol 13.4%

Pale with a brilliant straw colour and clear hue. Lifted, aromatic nose with white flowers, tropical fruits, granny smith and white nectarine. The palate shows considerable weight, a lovely middle of white peach, lime and a touch of brioche. As the wine opens there's a mix of ripe red apple, spices, cinnamon and citrus, with tastes of oak. Zesty acidity builds on the palate to a long savoury finish, revealing a hint of cashew nut over faint yet fine, textural tannins. The level of fine acidity suggested by the noticeable minerality really suppresses the level of ripeness, Olive Grove is a lovely dry, medium bodied wine that's most enjoyable now and will continue to develop further complex fruit.

The stump jump plough worked so well in McLaren Vale that it was adopted worldwide in the late 19th century because of its ability to ride over stumps and gnarled roots. A mix of varietals which have proved themselves to be a popular blend right from the very first release. Fruit is picked at different levels of ripeness from a network of good vineyards. Grapes are gently destemmed and crushed through the Demoisy crusher, lightly basket pressed, the free run and pressed juices are separated, run off to refrigerated tanks where they are slowly fermented to dryness. Some parcels are treated to partial fermentation on skins. Bottled without any oak maturation to retain vital expressions of good fruit off the vine. Approx 13.0%

Light citrus green hue. A wine with a wonderful fresh pale appearance matched with a quite expressive, fruity, dry aroma. The nose is initially dominated by Riesling notes of crisp florals, citrus and lime. Expressions of cut grass, passionfruit and sweet tropical fruit from the Sauvblanc emerge. Spices, musk and freshly cut flower stems are in the background with notes of passionfruit, almond kernels and nectarine stones. The palate is very fresh and tight. It is quite light due to its youth but there is a moderate level of restrained fruit intensity and ripeness balanced with lovely crunchy acidity which keeps the finish in check.
