1 - 12 of 41 Mourvedre
Charles Melton Nine Popes 2009
Barossa
Available by the case dozen only
Distinguished Langtons Classification. Based on the wines of Chateauneuf du Pape, or home of new popes, alternate papacy of the 13th century. Drawing fruit from the only other classic Grenache growing area in the world, Melton has given this evocative grape a little Aussie twist, assembling the inspiring varietal with parcels of old vines Barossa Mourvedre and Shiraz. Litigation by the French was avoided, but problem remains, Melton's French skills were a tad light when he named the wine, assuming Chateauneuf du Pape was a reference to the nine popes.

From choice Barossa blocks between Williamstown and Ebenezer, some over eighty years of age. Parcels are treated to the complete Charles Melton regimens, whole bunch fermentation of de-stemmed but uncrushed fruit. Cap management techniques include pigeage and hand plunging, as well as daily pumpovers throughout fermentation. The base wines after completion of ferments, present a fascinating palette from which to construct the Nine Popes, fortuitously not too much quantity at any extreme. A higher percentage of French oak is employed to add lovely cedar notes on the nose. Aged for twenty months, Nine Popes is then assembled before a light filtration and no fining agents before bottling.

Deeply coloured. Spicy fragrant nose, real depth and tightness. This is a serious wine. Many Grenache based reds can be light hearted and fresh, and indeed this is a legitimate manifestation of one Grenache style, but the aim is to make classic\s with a mix of spice, liquorice and other complex flavours leavened by some sweeter talc perfumes which will evolve into a seductive long term style.
Chateau De Beaucastel Cotes Du Rhone 2006
Cotes Du Rhone
Available by the case dozen only
Pierre de Beaucastel appropriated a plot of land for himself which extended fifty two saumées at Coudoulet on the Côtes du Rhône in 1549. A tradition of fine winemaking continued at Chateau Beaucastel for centuries until 1909 when management passed to Pierre Perrin, a scientist and entrepreneur who established one of the preeminent cartels of the region. Quality of fruit, the most palatable wines and sustainable methodologies remain the focus at Beaucastel, who have used no chemical fertilisers or pesticides in their vineyards since 1964.

The Coudoulet property remains an important part of the Beaucastel estate, a salubrious vineyard of thirty hectares, with diluvial alpine deposits containing rolled pebbles, over a former molasse sea bed of the miocene epoch. Grenache, Mourvedre, Syrah and Cinsault grapes are selectively hand picked in the vineyard and further sorted at the winery. Maceration takes place in enamel tiled vats over a period of twelve days before the free run juices are taken off, the must is treated to a light pneumatic pressing The varietal components are vinified seperately and assembled after the malolactic stage, following which the wine is matured in large, seasoned French oak casks for six months before egg white fining.

A dark red colour. The nose is elegant and spicy with overtones of pepper, cinnamon and black fruit. The palate is very elegant with soft tannins, silky texture and great acidity.
Chateau Monredon Cotes du Rhone 2009
Cotes du Rhone
The earliest vines at Mont Redon date back to ancient times. Protected from the chilling Mistral winds, the canny Romans planted them at the bottom of the hill which lends it's name to the site. In the middle of the 18th Century, nobleman Joseph Ignace d'Astier acquired Mont-Redon. His descendants still own the property, manage the vines and make Mont Redon Côtes-du-Rhône.

Essentially a Châteauneuf du Pape estate with a hundred acres under vine, Mont Redon acquired quality vineyards in Côtes du Rhône thirty years ago to create approachable wines with the structure and potential for development. A mostly Grenache Syrah wine from hand picked and hand sorted fruit, aimed at retaining nothing but the best grapes. Bunches are completely de stemmed and treated to fifteen days maceration for optimal extractions, achieving fine tannic structure. Following vinification in traditional vats and the completion of malolactic, batches are held under the estate cellars for eight or ten months, assembled and bottled for a further spell of ageing before release.

Bright, deep colour. Rich and developed nose, dark berries and raspberries offset by grilled notes and nuance of licorice. A very well structured palate with firm tannin support completed by an outstanding aromatic complexity of red fruits. Fat and round mouthfeel with a long and savoury, spicy finish.

dArenberg Ironstone Pressings GSM 2007
McLaren Vale
d'Arenberg's love affair with Grenache reaches its pinnacle with Ironstone Pressings. The original block planted in 1918, on the lower side of the winery, has a plentiful amount of ironstone throughout the soil structures, which enhances the body and tannin structure of the wine. As the finished wine is a cépage of three grapes it is a matter of selecting and screening the very best Grenache barrels. They complement the Dead Arm Shiraz component which likewise complements the 28 Rd Mourvèdre portion to a point where the Grenache is beautifully framed.

Most of McLaren Vale's soils are impregnated with ancient, decomposed laterite granite known as ironstone. The larger pieces were cleared from vineyards in the late 1880s and utilized in many of the buildings at d'Arenberg. Small batches of Shiraz, Grenache and Mourverdre are separately passed through a rubber toothed crusher into open fermenters. Some parcels are tread by foot two thirds of the way through. When tannin extraction is just right, the wines are basket pressed into oak for the completion of ferments and malolactic. Components are matured ten months on lees in a combination of two to five year old French and American oak barriques before assembling into the final wine. Alcohol 14.5%

A brilliant, gleaming appearance. The nose is juicy with fresh plum, blackberry and raspberry entwined with nutmeg, cinnamon spices and floral lift. A touch of licorice and a hint of white pepper add complexity. The palate has wonderful structure with elegant chalky tannins, long fine gritty mineral tannins providing a refined finish. The palate is nicely layered, soil characters are clearly evident with savoury dried herbs balancing the fruit sweetness and spices of Grenache. Ironstone is a very graceful wine with soulful charm and a sophisticated, precise structure. A rich, complex wine flavoured with spices, violets and dark chocolate, edges of black olive and dried herbs balanced by fine tannins and acidity.
dArenberg Stump Jump Red 2011
McLaren Vale
Available by the case dozen only
Stump Jump is an assemblage of components that flowed down from the many senior wines in the d'Arenberg stable, including parcels from a range of growers. Super value and packs plenty of interest, like an Aussie Cotes-du-Rhone with meat and berries, spices and earth. A touch of dried herbs adds a savoury edge with fine, lifted tannins providing a long finish. It's a cracking wine with sophistication, but don't worry it's still a lot of fun.

The red winemaking at this distinguised winery is very traditional and simplistic. Once picked, the fruit is gently crushed in an ancient Demoisy open mouthed, rubber toothed crusher and pumped into submerged cap open fermenters. All of d'Arenberg's reds are inoculated in traditional headed down open top fermenters. Upon completion, Stump Jump is gently pressed through d'Arenberg's nineteenth century Coq and Bromley Tregoning basket press prior to a spell of ageing in seasoned French and American oak casks.

A lovely rich dry red appearance with a red rose petal hue, Stump Jump has an extraordinary red brilliance about it. The nose features plum and bright red fruits with a hint of roasted meats, earth, pepper and exotic spice. The palate has some wonderful delicate fruit. Mulberry and plum of the Grenache combine with the blackberry, spice and white pepper of Shiraz. The palate is dry but fruity with soft tannins providing balance. The finish is lovely soft, rich in flavour with savoury red fruit characters and hints of vanillin that are characteristic of d'Arenberg.

A stylish balance of Mourvedre, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. In ripe years the Verdot is at its best, black and fragrant with sensational tannins. It was decided by the team at Gemtree that Phantom should always contain substantial percentages of each variety. Organic practises are essential for the vines, roaming sheep help to reduce the weeds and keep the grass mown around the place. Grapes are picked wholly on the basis of flavour each year, due to the wonderful growing conditions, natural acidity is retained and wines with tremendous structure are the result. Each component is open fermented and separately aged in French oak barrels for up to eighteen months.

A black and purple hued wine. Rich and complex nose of violets with mint, currants and cassis, rose petals, dark olives and chocolate, roasted almonds and dried sausage. A multi layered generous concentration on the front palate with oodles of flavour, a voluptuous middle palate, ripe elongated tannins which envelop the back end and create an ultimately seductive wine. Rich chocolate and berry flavours dominate, juicy fruits are bound together with an abundance of flattering acid. Penetrative dark fruit flavours integrate with creamy oak. Cabernet Franc contributes aromatics and ripe multi layered tannins. Mourvedre adds sweetness, concentration and oodles of flavour, Petit Verdot moulds the entire wine together.

Grant burge is well positioned to produce the Barossa's most remarkable, aged tawny port wines. Following harvest and the crush, vinification is initiated in traditional open fermenters, to be stopped at the desired sweetness by the addition of high quality brandy spirit. After pressing and clarification, the wine is matured in a selection of older oak barriques and hogsheads, allowing it to slowly develop harmony and complexity without adding any obvious oak character. A solera system of rack offs and top ups is employed to construct a palate of consistency and improve the quality of wines into perpetuity. A limited quantity of Aged Tawny is drawn for bottling each year and the barrels topped up with selected younger stock.

A lovely golden tawny colour with red tinges. The spicy fruit flavours are a legacy of the high proportion of Grenache and add a lifted freshness to the more complex aged characters in the background. The palate is smooth and rich, with the mid-palate sweetness balanced by an elegant drying finish.
