Vineyards in Great Southern enjoy unique maritime conditions typified by cool dry summers and cool wet winters, rather akin to it's sibling mesoclime in Bordeaux. The growing seasons here never fail to come up with the goods, stimulating the vines to yield Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot grapes of profound varietal character. A combination of winemaking practices are employed to enhance and preserve regionality. Fruit is harvested and crushed into traditional fermenters for several days of maceration, followed by inoculation and vinification to a mix of select and indigenous yeasts. Upon completion, Cartwheel is treated to maturation under a mix of fine oaks before assembling components into the finished wine.

Bright berry red in colour. Displays cherry and violets with savoury spice and cinnamon aromas on the bouquet. These characters are shared with the palate and followed up by red currants and blueberry, plum and cassis flavours, a complexity of dried herbs and tobacco leaf supported by gentle tannins and smooth background oak. Enjoy Cartwheel alongside tomato/ meat pasta dishes or barbequed meats.

Cartwheel's Sam Glaetzer worked as a cellarhand at Barossa Valley Estates and went on to various roles within Beringer Blass. He is an Environmental Engineer and is focused on the highest standards of sustainable viticulture. Fruit is sourced from vineyard sites around the warmer, northern part of the Margaret River region, carefully managed to produce distinctly regional Cabernet wines. Grapes are harvested and crushed, destemmed and vinified in temperature controlled vessels. Following fermentation, the wines are racked into a selection of new and prior use French and American oak barrels. After a year of maturation, parcels are assessed and assembled into the final wine before filtration and bottling.

The subtle influence of spicy, charry oak is also present on the nose. The palate displays cool climate roots with considerable charm, tight but elegant with a solid structure in support of blackcurrant, cracked black pepper, cocoa and mocha flavours. Cartwheel's Margaret River vineyards are chosen for their capacity to produce intense wines. Ideal ripening conditions are the norm, and the vines are refreshed by the maritime winds coming off the Indian Ocean. Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc grown to choice soils, well-drained sandy loams over water retentive clay loams. Grapes are harvested throughout the cool of the evening to maintain low fruit temperatures, before being crushed and pressed into tanks. After being settled overnight and racked, a cool fermentation is initiated, after which the batches of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon are assessed and assembled into a decidedly regional classic dry white.

These aromas develop across the palate along with grassy notes, characters of lime and green vegetable, nuances of slate and nut oil, a wonderful minerality that's made racey by the steely tang of fine fruit acids. This finely pitched Margaret River white is innately suited to all faire, and simply stimulating when accompanied by nothing except good company.
