An exclusive assemblage of Grands Crus and Premiers Crus, the first fermentation of La Grande Année is always carried out in oak barrel, a process unique to the winemaking traditions of Champagne. Bollinger makes use of well seasoned, prior use barrels, five years of age and more, to avoid any obvious new oak influence or unwanted tannins. La Grande Année ages under the Bollinger cellars for at least six years. After a manual disgorgement, La Grande Année is treated to a small liqueur dosage of 7 g/L to 9 g/L, before resting a minimum of three months prior to release. This short respite permits the wine to digest it's liqueur d'expédition and recover perfect balance.

Shimmering golden hue, the finest bead and most delicate effervescence, its delicate blush and old gold hue are a sign of maturity. Bouquet shows creamy oak barrel, toasted bread and brandied fruit, notes of exotic spice, rhubarb and stone fruit. A palate of remarkable structure and length. Crafted to be a memorable wine and a very great Champagne, magically retaining its freshness, ensuring sweet aromas and the expression of vital fruit bouquets. To accompany the finest consomme, the freshest fish and the ripest fromage Comté.

The first fermentation is done Cru by Cru, individual batches are kept separate, preserving the unique characters of the source vineyards. Bollinger is one of the very few Houses of Champagne to do some first fermentation in oak barrels. Bollinger uses small tanks to ferment its wines, improving the control of the fermentation process, enhancing the quality of wines in the Special Cuvée. Bollinger spends an exceptionally long time resting on it's sedimentery lees, contributing to the complexity. On average, the blend comprises 60% Pinot Noir, 25% Chardonnay and 15% Pinot Meunier. A further component of 5% to 10% reserve wines, from several different origins, all Grand and Premier Crus, all stored under cork.

Aromas of honey and biscuit, an immensely fine bead, a colour like platinum straw, pale amber gold. There is richnes and unparalleled complexity to the bouquet, there is both sweet fruit and astringency. Peach and praline, sweet smelling warm yeasty brioche, butter and almonds, citrus and soft pear. There is an intricate balance to the palate, a finesse that comes from inimitable blending and cellaring at the ancient cellars. The distinct chalkiness of Champagne is set against the alchemy of fruit compote flavours, refreshingly acidic, apricot and tropical fruit, butter and semolina cake. The flavours are many, aromas are authentic and exciting, the palate never breaks, a superb Champagne of immense personality.
The history of Bollinger is that of a family in the Champagne region of France over the centuries.

The original winemakers -Hennequins- were landowners in Cramant as of 1585 in Cuis and Ay. In 1829, Athanase Hennequin de Villermont became partners with Paul Renaudin and Jacques Bollinger to found the Maison Bollinger in Ay.

Bollinger

Bollinger, unlike it's thriving market oriented competitive Champagne Houses, has continued to produce rich, full-flavored wines that reflects tradition.

Bollinger owns one of the very few vineyards -Clos St. Jacques - to escape the vine disease that destroyed Europe's wineries in the 1800's. A secial release of this wine as the 100 percent pinot noir champagne called Vieilles Vignes Fran?aises, is unique in that it can boast that it's grown on ancient French rootstock.

Bollinger's hallmark style, palate and tradition is the result of centuries of winemaking in the unique micro-climates of Champagne's chalky earth.

Before being a great Champagne, Bollinger is a great wine and the quality of the grapes is a determining factor.

The Bollinger winery enjoys miles of underground cellars which are an integral part of the authentic Champagne making process.

The House's vineyard of 160 hectares, particularly well spread out, enables the winemakers to cover more than 60% of Bollinger's needs; an exceptional situation in Champagne. The remainder is supplied by associated winegrowers. This grape supply ensures the continuity and the consistency of the Bollinger style.

For five generations, Bollinger has remained a family owned Champagne producing House.

Madame Jacques Bollinger, who was familiarlycalled 'Aunt Lilly', took over the reins in 1941, following her husband's death. She succeeded in giving the firm new impetus whilst maintaining extremely strict rules regarding the quality.

Pinot Noir is the basis of the blend and contributes vinosity, complexity and strength. Bollinger favours Grands and Premiers Crus. Chardonnay adds a touch of elegance and refinement. Meunier imparts freshness and lightness.
