A combination of hand picked and machine harvested fruit is crushed and pressed, some parcels are completely whole bunch pressed, in a deliberate practice to build complexity within the finished wine. Half the juices are run straight to barrel for fermentation in a combination of new and prior use French oaks, while the rest is tank fermented. Tank ferments are aimed at retaining freshness and vitality, while the barrel treatments build length and complexity on the palate. There are almost no malolactic fermentations and no additions of acid are employed. The developing wine spends several months ageing and evolving on lees to extract maximum flavour from sediments until maturity.

Ripe pale yellow colour. Bouquets of citrus, grapefruit and lemon, pear and fig overtones, lifted aromas of stone fruits, creamy lees and oak characters. The palate has pure cool climate fruit with lovely length and acidity, supple and round, showing nectarine, pineapple and cream flavors that linger. A wholly integrated palate of ripe fruit restrained by the fine structure, French oak contributes an added dimension, delicately on the finish. Reminiscent of a dry peach melba, dressed with creamy hints of oak, which is nicely balanced and drinking extremely well. “Fine and delicate with balanced and subtle, understated oak. The fine lingering acidity sustains a long-focused palate. A good wine worth seeking.

Northerly winds from Long Gully provide good air flow and favourable micro climes. Grapes are given ten days skin contact for optimal extraction followed by five days vinification through the action of choice Burgundy yeasts and completion of malolactic. The finished wine is aged in a mix of seasoned and new French oak 225L barrique and 500L puncheons by Francois Freres, Mercurey, Dargaud et Jaegle and Sirugue. Alcohol 13.9%

Vibrant raspberry colour. Cherry, dark berry and spice aromas, all the primary fruit characters of violets, sasafras and cherry showing through on the nose. The palate is fully flavoured with black cherry and red currant fruit flavours under a sprinkle of cool climate spice. There's an evenness and structure to the wine, as it's savoury, earthy, yet vibrant palate receives support from a backbone of refined tannins and balanced acidity.
"From the outset our vision has been to produce wines of great quality and integrity amidst a location of beauty and welcome"

Since the first vintage more than 20 years ago, TarraWarra Estate has established itself as one of Australia's great wine estates, with TarraWarra Estate Chardonnay and Pinot Noir consistently receiving widespread acclaim and many prestigious Australian and international awards. These wines are of great character and depth, reflecting the outstanding quality of the 100% estate grown fruit from the unique microclimate of the site chosen specifically for these varieties.

TarraWarra has carved out a reputation as one of the Yarra's leading lights with an intensity and concentration rarely seen in that region. "In the hands of winemaker Clare Halloran, the style of TarraWarra wines has become more elegant and refined" -Peter Bourne, Gourmet Traveller

There are 23 different blocks at TarraWarra Estate, with most of these being less than one hectare, the majority of the Chardonnay was planted in 1983 and while the majority of the Pinot Noir was planted in 1984, additional plantings were made up until 1995. The majority of the vineyard is planted at a density of 2,200 vines per hectare with a very small area planted more densely at 3,000 vines per hectare. In recent years, older blocks of Chardonnay have been grafted over to Mendoza clone to add another dimension to the structure of the TarraWarra Estate Chardonnay.

The soil comprises a fairly thin layer of grey loam over clay. This soil composition leads to reduced vigour in the vines and the clay aids consistency by retaining water. As the majority of the vines are at least 20 years old, the fruit is consistently more concentrated and of a good acid balance with less fruit produced than from more vigorous younger vines. This significant vine age contributes noticeably to wines giving them more structure and greater balance.

While some blocks were planted trialling different trellising systems, the Estate is moving to all VSP trellis. This system has proved advantageous in not only growing the cordon relatively low to the earth to make the most of available radiant heat, but also in providing a significantly greater leaf canopy, important to shade fruit from sunburn and to improve ripening with increased leaf area/energy.
