Established 1983 in McLaren Vale, the Andrew Garrett label has long been regarded as an honest and unpretentious marque that delivers excellent value wines, approachable and reliable from year to year. Following selection and the crush, Shiraz is inoculated and vinified in a combination of temperature controlled fermenters. The base wines are racked and aged before a regimen of trials to determine the assemblage. A secondary fermentation is induced in bottle to create the fine, textural mousse.
 
Deep purple red, persistent creamy mousse. Bouquets of violet, cherry and spiced, peppery plum. A fine textural mouthfeel, soft and elegant, supported by solid tannins, controlled background oak and refreshing acidity. A long, lingering finish on a lip smacking note of dark berry fruits, licorice and plum. Enjoy Andrew Garrett with turkey or ham, a sauced chocolate pudding or cheese.
Arakoon Sellicks Beach Shiraz

Ray and Patrik Jones first venture into the wine industry was a proposal for a film featuring savant James Halliday as anchorman. Set near the juncture of Kangarilla and Tatachilla Roads at McLaren Vale, the father and son operation release small amounts of hand made wine. Arakoon are somewhat more elegant and understated, a stylistic objective achieved through extended post ferment maceration and supple new French oak. Sellicks Beach conjures violet and spiced plums over a heady touch of bourbon barrel and creamy, mocha tannins.

Arakoon is the aboriginal name of a forest that was known to the indigenous people for it's proximity to water. Jones & Son are upfront about their penchant for Burgundy but what they do is completely McLaren Vale. They collate hand chosen parcels of Shiraz from good growers in the Sellicks Beach and Willunga districts, grapes are painstakingly handled and sorted. Foot crushing, boots on, is the practice, and for the most part all wines are bottled unfined and unfiltered. Parcels are inoculated and vinified in traditional open vats, treated to an extended maceration and gentle transfer through a hand operated basket press before maturation in a combination of French and American oaks.
 
Deep red colour. Aromas of chocolate and plum, lifted baking spice, mullberry and ground black pepper. An array of black berry and cherry flavours kept vital by bright morello acidity. Seamless integration between good fruit, velvet tannins and fine oak, a smoky depth and lick of vanilla spice linger right through to the savoury finish.

McLaren Vale born and bred, he knows every acre of soil and every coastal breeze. Most importantly, he develops a kinship with each and every vine. Aramis won't say who this reputable man is, but his brilliance as a winemaker is evident from the moment a bottle of Aramis is opened. That was the arrangement made with the evasive artisan, to allow the Syrah to speak for itself.

The spectacular success of Aramis can be traced back to the terroir of a unique site. Vines are all low yielding and planted on their own rootstock, to some of the world's oldest mineral rich soils, under the most temperate of Mediterranean climes. Only the choicest parcels of fruit are considered for vinification under the Aramis label and the most exacting principles are employed throughout the winemaking process. An uncompromising attention to detail amongst the vines during the growing season, thinning and plucking by hand, is followed by fastidious sorting of berries at vintage. A selection of the finest oak barrels are utilized to mellow and integrate the firm McLaren Vale Syrah tannins.
 
Deep purple with a refined bead. Dark chocolate, anise and vanilla/ cedar bouquet with hints of blackberries and spice. A solid palate with chewy tannins, densely packed with ripe dark cherry fruit flavours, mocha and complex spice. The sweetness of the fruit is balanced by ripe acids which bring the wine to a long and lingering finish.

The Shaws of McLaren Vale established five acres of vine in 1975, with a view to supplying fruit for some of Australia's best known brands. The operation grew until their substantial acquisition of vineyards, some of the oldest plantings in South Australia, attracted the attention of Maglieri maestro John Loxton. Parcels of intensely flavoured grapes, harvested off deep rooted old vines grown to the eminent estate Arthur's Block, are vinified into a powerful rendering of McLaren Vale Shiraz, replete with generous alcohol, ripe tannins and exquisite length.

The Shaws are meticulous with their vineyard site selection and have established ultra premium quality vineyards in McLaren Vale and neighbouring Currency Creek. The most demanding viticultural regimens are combined with an old fashioned hands on approach to husbanding the land for harvests of grapes with intense flavour and splendid tannins. Controlled yields and close vineyard management means that fruit is picked in perfect order, no matter the conditions. Winemakers and growers connect to ensure harvests are delivered at the moment of optimized fruit ripeness. Following vinification and pressing, Ballast Stone Shiraz is transferred to a selection of American and French oak barrels for ageing and integration.
 
Purple red colour with dark core. Aromas of plum, blueberries and spice with a touch of vanilla oak. It was the superlative richness of McLaren Vale fruit that give sire to the uniquely Australian style of Sparkling Shiraz. Beresford set aside those parcels which show the greatest character and charm, for creation of a ripe, redolent effervescent style of Shiraz. Batches are slowly vinified at cooler temperatures and filled to a mix of seasoned French and American oak barrels for completion of ferments and eighteen months maturation. A velvety purple mousse invites the nose and palate into a cornucopia of ribald red fruit perfumes and succulent satsuma plum flavours.

The dedicated and inspiring viticulture of Carol and Tony Dunn ensures consistency of quality and purity of the wine, as it expresses the true nature of a sophisticated, albeit generously proportioned McLaren Vale Shiraz. Exclusively hand picked parcels of fruit from the clean and green, pestiscide free estate vineyard, are treated to an old world style, minimalist vinification in traditional fermenters, followed by transfer to a selection of French and American oak barrels for completion of malolactic and maturation until assemblage in September.

Tony Dunn learned to make small batch wine from fruit picked off hedgerows on the English countryside. After converting his McLaren Vale grazing property to viticulture in the 1990s, Dunn called upon his bucolic experiences amongst the English country laneways, to craft vintages of superlative limited release Shiraz which have claimed conspicuous national and international wine show accolades. The pick of Braydun Hill crop is reserved for bottling behind the Premium Single Vineyard moniker, a generously proportioned wine of elegance, structure and striking poise.

Carol and Tony Dunn established their McLaren Vale homestead to herds of angora goat in the 1990s. Conspicuous trophy victories and industry accolades however, proved unnegotiable at a time when the market for mohair and fine fleece was on the decline. Viticulture was the next port of call, rootstock was sourced from Don Oliver's property, a source of Shiraz for the mighty Penfolds Grange, several hectares were planted and the inaugural harvest arrived in 2001. An elegant fruit forward style to match melted cheese recipes or crumbed cotoletta of lamb.
