Penfolds Grange 1.5L MAGNUM 1990
Barossa Clare Coonawarra
The 1990 and 1991 Granges are regarded by many as extraordinary wines with incredible power and finesse. James Halliday calls this vintage flawlessly supple. In 1990 Grange dropped the Hermitage tag, to align with the name by which it had been known internationally for many years. 95% Shiraz, 5% Cabernet Sauvignon from Kalimna and other Barossa Valley vineyards, Clare Valley and Coonawarra. A very great vintage with a perfect warm, dry growing season and harvest, yielded a Grange with solid structure and dominant fruit characters.

Regardless of vintage, Grange delivers a unique experience of Shiraz, but history will record 1990 as one of the great Australian vintages of a generation. The 1990 Penfolds Grange was one of the best to date, with the potential to rival the classic vintages of 1955, 1962 and 1971. A superbly balanced wine, and a very great Grange vintage with tremendous finesse and understated power. Voted Red Wine of the Year UK Wine Spectator magazine in December 1995% A memorable growing season gave us an immensely concentrated Grange, beautifully perfumed wine with deep, dark, chocolate/spicy/ mocha/malty aromas Matured in new American oak hogsheads for eighteen months. Alcohol 13.50% Acidity 7.1g/L pH 3.41

John Duval Tasting Notes: Deep crimson, medium-full red/purple colour. Immensely concentrated, beautifully perfumed wine with deep, dark, chocolate/spicy/ mocha/malty aromas. Ripe plummy aromas with smoky vanillin oak, a very rich, ripe, supple palate with deep blackberry/chocolate/liquorice fruit, malt/vanilla oak nuances and satin smooth tannins. This vintage is now supremely complex and harmonious, with ripe plum and coffee-like luscious fruit, integrated oak, fine tannins and excellent length.

Penfolds Grange 1.5L MAGNUM 1991
Barossa McLaren
The 1991 Grange shocked me with its sweet, forward display of jammy black fruits, smoke, roasted coffee, and copious toasty oak scents and flavors. This mouthfilling Grange, inevitably becomes more complex and civilized with ten or more years of cellaring.

Another great Grange vintage, the 1991 is one of the finest red wines made in Australia, rivalling the highly acclaimed 1990 95% Shiraz, 5% Cabernet Sauvignon from exceptional vineyards in the Barossa Valley, including Kalimna, and the McLaren. A warm, dry year with even ripening conditions, vintage began early. Matured in new American oak hogsheads for eighteen months. Alcohol 13.50% Acidity 7.3g/L pH 3.32.

Comments by Winemaker John Duval: A glorious, dark, dense, red purple colour. The rich bouquet shows an incredible depth of ripe berry spice, tobacco, mocha and green tea aromas with unmistakable Penfolds oak handling. The palate has intensely concentrated, mouthfilling fruit flavours showing spicy, rich berry fruit and earthy characters with masses of ripe tannins and integrated oak, finishing with excellent length.

90% Shiraz, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon from the Barossa Valley (including the century-old vines of the Kalimna Vineyard) Coonawarra and McLaren Vale. The winemaking process involves great attention to detail, from selecting the best possible grapes sourced from low-yielding, old Shiraz vines, through to fermentation and fastidious oak maturation. A cool to mild growing season marked by intermittent rains. Matured in new American oak hogsheads for eighteen months. As always released as a five-year old wine, the maturation period being a legacy of Max Schubert's trials through the 1950s, the 1992 Grange magnum has been kept perfectly cellared. Alcohol 13.50% Acidity 7.00g/L pH 3.43.

Comments by John Duval. Deep, dense, dark brick-red with purple crimson hues. The bouquet displays all the distinctive hallmarks, abundant, sweet, ripe berried fruit coupled with balanced integrated oak. As it breathes, the wine reveals alluring tobacco, smoked roasted nuts and concentrated blackcurrant nuances. The palate has intense, sweet, rich fruit with pronounced yet rounded ripe tannins. Excellent structure and integration of spicy, earthy fruit and firm oak, finishing with great length of flavour.

Penfolds Grange 1.5L MAGNUM 1993
Barossa Coonawarra
Penfolds Grange, blossoms with fifteen to twenty years of bottle age, when most other reds have past their best, and better vintages can live and continue developing for decades longer. A self-taught, practical winemaker with a natural inquisitiveness for winemaking theory, creator Max Schubert embraced a romantic view of winemaking. Though he retired as Chief Winemaker at Penfolds in 1973, Max remained involved as a mentor and Winemaker Emeritus for another 20 vintages. 1993 is an earlier maturing vintage under Magnum, kept optimumly cellared.

86% Shiraz, 14% Cabernet Sauvignon from the Kalimna and other vineyards in the Barossa Valley, and the Coonawarra. One of Australia's national treasures, Grange is the benchmark by which all other reds in this country, vintage 1993 Grange represents over forty years of winemaking excellence. To share a magnum of mature Grange 15 to 20 years old, in fine condition, is one of the great wine experiences. A very wet growing season was followed by warm, drier conditions, resulting in a very late but sound quality vintage fruit. An Indian Summer in the Coonawarra delivered fully ripened fruit. Matured in 100% new American oak for eighteen months. Alcohol 13.50% Acidity 6.00g/L pH 3.6.

Winemaker comments by John Duval. Dense plum red merging to brick red on rims. ntense Intense blackcurrant and plum with malt, fig and liquorice aromas that leap from the glass. This has all the characters of a classic Grange. What is promised on the nose is delivered on the palate - a powerful, concentrated, opulent wine. Layers of Shiraz fruit and first class oak manifest themselves into a seemingly endless variety of flavours - deep plum, liquorice, black olive, chocolate, cedar, coffee, etc, all compressed into a silken, round mouth feel. Forceful, ripe tannins are balanced by sheer weight of fruit. It is hard to believe that 100% new American oak was used - the intensity of fruit has all but soaked it up.

Grange's weight and concentration can be traced to rigorous selection of intensely flavoured Shiraz grapes from mature vines in some of South Australia's finest vineyards. The quantity of Grange made each year is determined by the availability of grapes of the required quality and style. Penfolds reduce the impact of vintage variation to the point where experts the world over consider Grange to be among the most consistent of the world's great wines. Despite a difficult vintage, rigorous selection of intensely flavoured grapes from mature vines in some of the finest vineyards produced a wine that exceeded vintage expectations. Maturation for seventeen months in 100% cent new American oak hogsheads. Alcohol 13.5%

Winemaker comments by John Duval: Deep red. Complex with masses of concentrated plum, raspberry and blackberry fruit aromas and hints of leather, dark chocolate and spice. An outstanding vintage, good winter rain was followed by warm to mild and dry conditions, harvest was orderly and there was little or no disease. Maturation nineteen months in new American oak. Alcohol 14.00% Acidity 7.20g/L pH 3.41

Winemaker comments by John Duval: Vibrant plum red. A fusion of cinnamon and mixed spices with blackcurrant blueberry and boysenberry fruit; savoury, underlying aromas of earth, cold tea and roast chestnuts plus barrel-ferment richness. Archetypal young Grange with concentration, balance and powerful berry fruit flavours, with blueberry at the core. Tight and structured, although the thick, ripe tannins are shrouded beneath a veil of opulent fruit. Excellent length and persistence of flavour and masterful handling of oak. A very fine Grange that will confidently sit alongside the great 1990.

The 1997 vintage is predominantly Shiraz (96%) with a small amount of Cabernet Sauvignon (4%) from the Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale. A somewhat challenging vintage combining a cool start to the season with heat in the high summer. Budburst was slightly later than usual in most South Australian regions, with mild weather through to Christmas. The onset of a prolonged heat wave in February further delayed ripening. Fortunately, a sunny, warm autumn followed, allowing vines to reach full ripeness. Maturation twenty months in new American oak. Alcohol 14.00% Acidity 7.00g/L pH 3.52

Winemaker comments by John Duval: A deep, crimson red. Immediately engaging, with wafts of nutmeg and ginger amongst notes of blueberry and blackcurrant and a background of wellseasoned savoury oak. The fruit gains in the glass with aeration, when more subtle perfume and chestnut complexities emerge. Already showing excellent balance within the frame of a beautifully interwoven mesh of dark plum and blackberry fruits with fig and liquorice. Complex fruit and spice flavours sit against a finely focused backdrop of firm but rounded tannins, balancing acidity and seductive, perfectly integrated, smoky oak. The palate has wonderful length, with a tightly structured, tannic finish indicative of the calibre of this fine wine.

Penfolds Grange 1.5L MAGNUM 1999
McLaren Padthaway Barossa Kalimna
Grange boasts an unbroken line of vintages from the experimental 1951 and clearly demonstrates the synergy between Shiraz and the soils and climate of South Australia. Penfolds Grange displays fully-ripe, intensely-flavoured and textured Shiraz grapes in combination with new American oak. The result is a unique Australian style that is now recognised as the most consistent of the world's great wines. The Grange style is the original and most powerful expression of Penfolds' multi-vineyard, multi-district blending philosophy.

Sourced primarily from the Penfolds Kalimna Vineyard and other Barossa Vineyards, with proportions from McLaren Vale and Padthaway. Vintage Conditions The 1999 vintage in South Australia was defined by generally dry and cool weather conditions during early summer, temporarily disrupted by a hot spell in late January before moderate conditions during vintage. Multi-regional sourcing and strong vineyard management resulted in parcels of fruit being harvested with hallmark fruit richness and ripe tannins. Grape variety Shiraz (Syrah) Maturation 17 months in new American oak. Alcohol 14.0%

Colour is an impenetrable deep red/purple. Nose Blackberry and blueberry fruit interwoven with perfectly tuned, malty, savoury oak, with liquorice and anise notes hovering above. Upon sitting there is a whirling aromatic shift, the wine becoming more complex, deeper, richer and darker. Palate Layers of fruit, with blackberry and blueberry to the fore, as suggested by the nose. An underlying tarriness and new oak are seamlessly absorbed. A mass of fine grained tannins court a firm tight finish of great length. The wine possesses the essential ingredients of the marque, richness, harmony, and balance. A fitting Grange release to end the 1900's, with decades of life ahead.

Penfolds Grange 1.5L MAGNUM 2000
Barossa
Penfolds renowned 2000 Grange is only the fifth vintage to be made from 100% Shiraz. It is also, atypically, 100% Barossa fruit. While it is not considered to be one of the great Granges, the 2000 exhibits outstanding potential, and is much more accessible than usual. One of the top wines I tasted from this vintage, its dense ruby/purple color is followed by a big, sweet nose of blackberries. While this is no wimpy wine, it is an ideal example for readers who are unwilling to invest the patience required for the big, blockbuster Granges.

Strong yet tempermental grape and deep berry flavours are the hallmarks of Grange, and the Penfolds winemakers have maintained the magic. Grange 2000 is an excellent example of the style transcending a most challenging South Australian vintage. Oak plays a supportive role, perfectly integrated and absorbed. This is a wine of admirable balance and poise. As in most south-eastern districts, some rain fell between Christmas and New Year, followed by very dry and very hot conditions until March. Crops were down by 2 to 40%, yielding exclusive parcels of superior Grange quality fruit in the Barossa. This wine was aged for eighteen months in new American oak hogsheads. Alcohol 14.0% Acidity 6.80g/L pH 3.59.

Deep (bright) red crimson in colour. At once a youthful Grange, smoky barrel fermented notes hover above a complex base of black liquorice, tobacco, black pepper, exotic spices and plummy, berried fruits. Dark chocolate and plum fruits court a deceptive play of substantial ripe tannins, a more powerful Grange stamp on the palate than on the nose.

Penfolds Grange 1.5L MAGNUM 2001
Barossa
Soon after Wine Spectator named Grange 'The Best Red Wine in the World' the price of subsequent vintage releases soared at auction. An Australian icon, Grange represents a tradition in winemaking that is totally uncompromising. Grange has bypassed the fads and trends of modern winemaking in the sense that it has maintained an integrity of style and remained true to its origins in the mind of Max Schubert. Penfolds Grange is the quality standard against which all other Australian red wines are judged. To share a magnum of Grange from one's own cellar is one of the great wine experiences.

100% Barossa Valley. Good winter rains and soil moisture levels led to a very good early growing season. Growth was vigorous and flowering was successful however the onset of exceptional heat in January depleted soil moisture, and vineyards without water suffered. Rain in mid-March provided relief and vineyards produced shiraz with excellent, ripe fruit flavours. Ideally suited to Beef, Lamb, Duck & Game, this Grange was aged for 17 months in new American oak hogsheads. Alcohol 14.5% Acidity: 6.5g/l pH: 3.66.

Deep, dark and dense, retaining bright purple hues. The nose is immediately Grange, revealing barrel ferment complexities soaked in dark berried fruits. Vibrant, youthful and lifted, a mix of tightly packed liquorice, freshly tanned leather and dark spices create a poised, controlled and distinctive wine. A rich, full-flavoured and concentrated wine with complex rum/raisin dark chocolate, liquorice, quince paste and dried fruit notes. Prominent, well integrated tannins align with oak (all but soaked up by the fruits) to create a lingering continuum of flavours and tactile persistence. Beautifully balanced, this 100% Barossa wine delivers the expectations demanded of a Grange.

Winemaker comments by Peter Gago. As a five year old at the time of tasting, and just before its annual release, the wine is deep, dark and impenetrable. Immediately Grange, the aromatics just happen to be compatible with that of Shiraz. The aromas transform and complex across many planes, with air and over time in the glass. At first, a rich mix of dark chocolate infused with coffee bean and black liquorice, then scents of tar, aniseed, raw (pure) soy and black olive. Is it oak, or a hybrid, barrel ferment character that can be captured as it oscillates in and out of this beguiling aromatic offering? Dark berried flavours and textural sensations accessible, as yet hidden, untapped flavour and structure.
