Aberlour Abunadh Single Malt Whisky 700ml
Available in cases of 6
Aberlour a'bunadh is a natural single cask strength malt whisky. Taken directly from specially selected sherry casks, it is bottled as simply as possible, without the use of modern filtering methods or the addition of water. Only the best Sherry Butts, which previously held oloroso, have been selected by Aberlour's Director. These casks are the rarest and the most precious used for whisky maturation. They date back to the old days when sherry was imported from Spain in casks which were then left empty sitting in UK ports or ships.

Biding time and scarcely seen, quiet it waits, encased in green. Did I hear thunder, distant roar? I watch the gleaming liquid pour, from lair of oak, an eye of gold. Beguiling wisps of smoke take hold. Blackness charred by fiercest flame propels the force I cannot tame. It pulls me down to take the bait, now in too deep, I taste my fate. Jaws shut closing in a vice, chewy steak and liquid spice

Burnished tan leather colour. Warning signs of cumin and barbecue sauce on the bouquet. A monstrously chewy mouthfeel leads the way into a voluminous symphony of rich, intense smoky and charred flavours, with hints of soot and leather, chocolate and ginger and some altogether more savoury flavours, such as smoky pak choi and char sui barbecued meats in black bean sauce. This then gives way to some more familiar flavours, such as liquorice espresso coffee and hints of gentle, creamy vanilla. Long and satisfying, with mocha espresso coffee, ginger, cigar smoke, and a curious, lingering sweetness

Follow your nose along the famous road from Port Ellen and you will eventually come to the most welcoming distillery on the island. Ardbeg's white-washed walls can be found nestling in a rocky cove on Islay's southern tip. Who would believe that back in 1981, the distillery fell silent and was mothballed, with only very small scale distilling resuming in 1989. Between 1990 and 1996, it opened and closed with monotonous regularity, before finally closing, seemingly for good, in 1996. Fortunately in 1997, to the delight of fans all over the world Glenmorangie plc rescued Ardbeg, and a team of dedicated souls set about repairing and reviving the distillery (not to mention repainting it!).

Ardbeg is famed for packing a peaty punch, but there is more to The Ultimate Islay Malt than meets the eye, nose or tastebud. To prove it, Ardbeg has undertaken an experiment to tame it's usual mighty peating level and allow Ardbeg's lighter qualities to shine through. At only 8ppm (parts per million phenol) in the bottle, Blasda (Gaelic for sweet and delicious) unmasks the delicious sweetness of sherbet vanilla, chocolate limes and the floral fragrance that is inherent in all expressions of Ardbeg Isle of Islay. Blasda is chill filtered and presented at 40% alcohol by volume, a variation to most Ardbeg which are not normally chill filtered and weigh in at a minimum of 46% alcohol

Colour is a light gold. Deliciously sweet and refreshing. On first nosing, the aroma is reminiscent of baked banoffiepie and roast chestnuts. On further nosing, cloves, pine cones and fresh mint rise from the glass, softened by creamy vanilla custard. A tingle of lemon and lime marmalade cuts through the vanilla withspiced pears followed by a breath of menthol and sea salt. Refreshing, silky and creamy to the palate, the initial sip is sweet with a mixture of sugared almonds, marzipan and hints of dried fruits. Gentle peat oils well up on the palate, remaining soft, clean and dry with adusting of powdery parmaviolets. The finish is medium in length and tingly with a refreshing balance of fruits and herbs

Experiments initiated in 1999 have accumulated parcels of Ardbeg stock slowly maturing in French oak casks. These are at the heart of Corryvreckan's perplexing character, teasing spicy and sumptuous sweet fruity notes from the maturing whisky. A combo of French oak casks with classic Ardbeg matured in ex bourbon American oak casks to bring a unique contrast of extraordinary and unexpected tastes. Torrents of tarry coffee and waxy dark chocolate give way to sweet and sumptuous autumn fruits (blackberries and plump cherries) and overtones of peppered oak spices. Bottled at a powerful 57.1% and non chill-filtered, the taste is intense, the mouthfeel chewy. Truly a peaty paradox if ever there was one!

The deepest amber colour. Heady, intense aromas, powerful. With the first sniff, encounter the deep and turbulent force of Corryvreckan as it pulls you inwards. Swirl the glass and dip your nose into the torrents of tarry ropes, creosote and linseed oil rising from deep within the vortex. As you succumb to its power, a collision of waxy dark chocolate, warm blackcurrants and muscovado sugar pulls you under its spell with a burst of plump cherries and earthy pine needles leaping from its depths. Swirl water into the glass, and observe the magical collision of whisky and water. Long, deep and remaining powerful into the finish with black tarry coffee, chocolate coated cherries and hot pepper sauce
