Best known for their award winning McLaren Vale reds, the second most conspicuous varietal wine at Coriole is Chenin Blanc. Their efforts have been ranked within the top ten Chenin Blancs of the world at Rendez Vous du Chenin Competition in France, no mean feat for an Australian. The soils at Coriole are mostly Terra rossa, red brown earths over limestone. Another part of the vineyard is endowed with red earth ironstones, the oldest block, established in 1920 is planted to deep clays. The drier than normal summers put a greater importance on land management and careful fruit selection throughout the vineyards and all during the vinification process.

Pale lime/ straw hues. Citrus, fresh pear and green apple bouquet with hints of kiwifruit. The palate is lively and fresh with pear juice and peach characters. A delicious and well balanced white wine exhibiting aromatic fruit flavours before a crisp acid finish. Chenin Blanc suits a wide range of foods and can also be served as an aperitif wine. It particularly suits the piquant nature of Thai and Indian cuisine.

In the crowded world of wine, New Zealand is paradise for Pinot Gris, Crowded House is all about taking a fresh new look at the established norms. New Zealand's diverse mesoclimes offer constant challenge in both the viticultural and technical aspects of winemaking. One only gets so many chances, the vagaries of vintage offer unique potential to make a truly articulate Pinot Gris. Fruit is harvested and pressed, cold settled and sent to fermenters. Batches are inoculated to a menu of yeasts, some to accentuate aromatics, others contribute textural richness. Upon completion, batches are kept on heavy lees until assemblage in January, a component is aged in seasoned French oak puncheons.

Pale apricot straw hue. Fresh clean nose of honeysuckle and pear, lychee and orange rind. Quince and pear flavours, white stonefruits and musk, spice and beeswax notes. A finely balanced and linear palate, showing gentle textural richness, finishing refreshingly dry and satisfyingly long.

dArenberg Hermit Crab Marsanne Viognier
McLaren Vale
Available by the dozen
The close proximity of d'Arenberg's vineyards to Gulf St. Vincent means the grapes can be stimulated by gently cooling maritime breezes. Much of McLaren Vale is planted to free draining soils underlaid by limestone, formed by the calcareous remains of local marine fauna. One such creature was the Hermit Crab, a reclusive little crustacean that to this day inhabits the cast off shells of others. McLaren Vale's first ever Marsanne Viognier is named Hermit as a reference to the region in France where the Marsanne grape dominates white wines.

At vintage time, Chester Osborn chooses when to pick the fruit by walking the vineyard rows and tasting grapes. Parcels of Viognier and Marsanne are crushed and settled before being treated to a gentle basket pressing which ensures the soft extraction of delicate but defined fruit characters of each grape. The Viognier and Marsanne components receive a similar vinification but are handled separately until the final stages. Fermentations are long and moderately cool to retain fresh fruit flavour. A small percentage of the Viognier is fermented in aged French and American oak barrels to add mouth feel and support the Viognier tannins. Components are assembled after a few months maturation.

Brilliant hue with light tints. Wonderfully aromatic, heavenly lift of candied ginger and crunchy, sweet white nectarine, complex Marsanne notes of green papaya and pistachio. Stone fruits hold sway over the sumptuous attack and mid palate, nuttiness of Marsanne and a delicate hint of sea spray. The complete package of stone fruits and spice before a long savoury finish make Hermit Crab the perfect dinner party starter.

Deadman's Hill is a hundred metres higher than the other vineyards at Delatite and has been dry grown for most of it's life. The steep ironstone slopes and crisp mountain airs at Delatite provide an idyllic mesoclime for the spicey Gewurtztraminer, which demands slow ripening to develop fully. Hand pruned, hand picked and patiently sorted by the winemakers themselves, fruit is whole bunch pressed, the musts are chilled and left in the press for a term of cold soak. Some of the settling lees are retained within the clear juices as indigenous yeasts begin a wild ferment, slow and cool for a month. A component is treated to vinification in larger format oak vats for richness and complexity. Batches are held on lees for with periodic stirring to infuse yeast autolysis, bottled with minimum fuss for the retention of pure varietal charm.

A straw coloured wine. The aromas are a melange of cinnamon and clove, rose petal, lychee and musk which follow through to the richly flavoured palate. Flavours of hazelnut and toast, cardammon, lychee and ginger biscuit, clove and turkish delights. Decidedly Traminer, a wine which deserves to be appreciated today alongside crustacea, Asian recipes and all spiced faire.
