Vavasour Pinot Gris
Marlborough Awatare
Available in cartons of six
Vavasour pioneered viticulture in the Awatere Valley, under the imposing presence of Tapuae-O-Uenuku. Vavasour’s vineyard is noteworthy for its wide diurnal temperature swings, it's the combination of soils and clime which shape the inimitable character of Vavasour wine. The refined elegance of their Pinot Gris shows why many others have followed the lead. Sweetly spiced on the nose and palate, yet pleasingly dry, soft savoury aromas are reflected by intensely concentrated flavours on the palate.

Pinot Gris is harvested off Vavasour's favourite blocks on the Home vineyard throughout the cool of autumn mornings. To ensure concentration and weight on the palate, yields are kept low. After whole bunch pressing, the juices are split and a component is vinified in seasoned old French oak barriques employing wild yeasts from the vineyard, the major portion of fruit is treated to vinification in temperature controlled fermenters. Five months of lees stirring adds richness and texture without sacrificing delicate aromatics. The wine is assembled to display a lovely mix of flavours within a rich palate exhibiting the essential Marlborough zing, followed by a brief spell of maturation.

Pale gold colour. Vavasour shows lifted tropical fruit, melons and citrus, subtle pear and jasmine notes. Made to a dry style, the richly structured palate exhibits luscious layers of fruit, with hints of pear and ginger, followed by a long mineral finish that's so distinctive of Awatere Valley. Pleasingly crisp and dry, very ready to drink now. Introduce Vavasour to a crisply roasted duck and you have a match made in heaven.
Villa Maria Cellar Selection Pinot Gris
Marlborough
Available by the dozen
Villa Maria selects clones of Pinot Gris that produce lower yields with smaller bunches, which translates into more concentrated flavours. The viticulturists spend a great deal of time monitoring and adjusting the crop levels to make sure the vines are carrying the right amount of grapes. Low yields of two to three kilos per vine, timely leaf plucking and canopy management activities concentrate the flavours in the grapes. Although this leads to a smaller harvest, the emphasis is placed on quality not quantity, culminating in a fully opulent Pinot Gris wine.

Close attention is paid to vine health and fruit development, crop loading and fruit exposure. Parcels of Pinot Gris grapes, most of them picked by hand, are gently pressed to render a pure concentrated juice, lightly settled for twelve hours before transfer to a mix of fermenters and old oak barriques. Neutral yeasts and a cool vinification are employed to preserve the natural purity of fruit. Warmer barrel ferments by indigenous yeasts add complexity. Upon completion, parcels are kept on yeast lees for three months while being treated to a weekly battonage, building palate texture and richness. This wine is then assembled, lightly fined and filtered to bottle.

Straw yellow peach colour. Perfumed aromas of pineapple and ripe pear with hints of gentle spice. Engaging sweet floral characters everywhere, from the fine silky entrance to the luxuriantly creamy mid palate, a rich and warm appealing new world style. A luscious mouthful of fruit showing generous baked apple and cinnamon characters, followed by a lively, rich and harmonious finish. Pair with lightly spiced Asian cuisine or fresh summer salad with crab.

Fruit is sourced from vineyards across a range of mesoclimes, a spectrum of flavour profiles to maintain continuity of style. The majority of sites are trained to vertical shoot position, special care is taken to maintain vine health, clean fruit and balance. Parcels are harvested over several weeks at varying levels of ripeness. Fruit is crushed, pressed and cold settled before being racked clean off lees for vinification. Neutral and aromatic yeast strains are employed to inoculate the clear juice. Fermentations are conducted at cooler temperatures, to retain delicate flavour and preserve aromatics.

The application of simple vineyard philosophies is more important to making a great Chenin Blanc than introducing new techniques. Basic vineyard principles which remain universal are a good terroir and minimal intervention. The management of vines at Voyager Estate focuses on canopy maintenance, low bud numbers and small bunches. Clonal selection means finding the perfect match for each soil. Chenin Blanc is sourced from three estate blocks, grapes are immediately pressed, juices are cold settled, racked and inoculated with yeast QA23. After two to three weeks vinification at 15ËšC, batches are held on yeast lees for a month and regularly stirred to enhance textural richness. Alcohol 13.5%

Pinot Gris is harvested throughout the cool of early morning and gently pressed while still icy cold, to preserve aromatics and minimise phenolic pick up. After three days of cold settle, the clear juices are racked off solids and inoculated to Alsation yeasts chosen for their ability to enhance body, texture and varietal aromas. A cool vinification at 13° to 15° in chilled fermenters preserves freshness of fruit, contributing elegance and finesse. Ferments are arrested, retaining some residual sugar, to balance the mineral and fine phenolic structure. A course of lees stirring batonnage, enhances texture and contributes to the depth of palate, to be followed by assemblage into the finished wine. Alcohol 13.5%

An off-dry entry leads into a textured mid-palate, with nice acidity on the sides, the wine ends with a soft, non-bitter finish. Good concentration of fruit weight gives the wine real presence on the palate and with the balanced palate architecture creates an elegant wine that is very versatile with food.
