Mitchell Watervale shows amazing intensity of flavour, articulate of its Clare Valley provenance, all the winemaking team need do is preserve the character of organically grown fruit as it proceeds through the vinification. Intense with tangy lime characters, citrus florals, thistle milk and talc, a refreshing Riesling of exquisite elegance, divine balance and poise. Wild ferments, lees contact and an extended term of bottle age all serve to soften the palate, its luxurious minerality resolves on a racy, crisp and gratifyingly drying finish.

$3399each $407DOZEN EACH DOZEN Mitchell's largest vineyard is located at Watervale, several kilometres south of the estate wineworks. Set on the exposed eastern slopes of undulating hills, with long rows of vine, this can be a very bleak place in the middle of winter at pruning time. The isolation and chills has led to it becoming known among the vineyard workers as Alcatraz, a place to do penance in the cold, wind and rain of a Clare Valley winter. Alcatraz, which only ever yields around two ton per acre, is particularly well suited to Riesling, infusing the fruit with great depth of flavour. The fully mature vines are planted to soils that are rich red brown loam and clay over limestone, at an altitude between 300 and 400 metres.

A conservative, old style approach to farming, working in close concert with careful attention to the health of soil, continues to deliver a peerless quality of Riesling, equating to the finest harvests of Clare Valley Riesling. Watervale is a very special place within the valley, Riesling is the grape of choice. Mitchell remain one of Clare Valley's finest and best received Rieslings, the exquisitely balanced, drying palate brims with delightful regional/ varietal fruit characters, jasmines and lime, resolving on a toasty, lingering fruit filled finish.

Lemon hue. Delicate and floral with lightly toasty, buttery hints of lemon rind, beeswax and honey, long lingering fruits are the hallmarks. The flavours evolve into the rich toasty characters for which Watervale is so renowned. An immensely satisfying wine with finesse and a touch of dryness, crisp acidity and long fruit driven finish. Mitchell is suitably mated to garlic prawns, crispy skin chicken or fragrant risotto recipes.

Half Marsanne, the balance of Rousanne and Viognier, sourced exclusively from the Mitchelton estate vineyard. Airstrip is a lively but tight blend of vigorous white fruit. Modest crop levels ranging from 2 to 3½ tonnes per acre give this wine its core intensity. Each individual block is managed and vinified separately to allow the different qualities of each variety, shaped by the unique vineyard site and soil profiles, to shine through. The individual parcels of fruit are moulded together during blending to produce the unique Airstrip style.

$2599each $311DOZEN EACH DOZEN Mitchelton's vines are rigorously husbanded, careful monitoring of fruit ripening ensures harvesting occurs at the time of the fruit's optimum maturity. The crushed juices are cold settled, racked and warmed before inoculation with choice yeasts. Some of the lime green yoghurty textured juice lees is retained when racking the juice, adding complexity to the final Airstrip blend. Marsanne and Roussanne are barrel fermented for nine months in 20% new French oak, the Viognier is barrel fermented in four years old French oak barrels to retain purity of fruit expression. All oak fermented wines are individually selected, barrel by barrel, to ensure the harmony of oak and texture in the final assemblage.

Pale straw with vivid green hues. Inviting aromas of peach and apricot blossom, hints of savoury pistachio meld with spicy oak high notes.  The palate is a showcase of delicacy, ripe apricots, white peaches and crisp apple to the fore. Secondary layers of cumquat combine with a complex spiciness on the well rounded, medium body palate.

Mitchelton was originally a grazing property known as Blackwood Park. The soils and microclimate are significantly influenced by the presence of the pristine Goulburn River which surrounds the property on three sides, shaping the unique environment and mesoclime. In turn, geological shifts, ancestral river flows and climate have created distinct soil profiles on individual blocks. Priority is given to monitoring sugar and acid profiles while grapes are ripening, timing of harvest is critical to achieving optimum balance and intensity in the wine.

$2799each $335DOZEN EACH DOZEN Parcels of Riesling are sourced from several blocks across Mitchelton estate, predominantly duplex red brown earths with friable soft sandy loam topsoil overlying well structured blocky red subsoils. Picking occurs during the early hours of morning in the midst of the cool Goulburn nights. From the crusher, to the press and in to the settling tank, fruit is protected by cooler temperatures and judicious gas coverage, to preserve the fragile aromas and flavours which are so vulnerable once the skins have been broken. Settling is short and cold, racking is clean and gentle in preparation for inoculation to a vigorous neutral yeast strain, ensuring an even, cold fermentation over the course of two to three weeks.

Pale antique gold in colour with green highlights. A delicate yet powerful nose of lifted floral and citrus aromas with a hint of musk. Flavours of freshly cut lemon and lime fill the palate, balanced by crisp acid which ensures the wine will develop superbly in the bottle. Intense citrus and floral flavours are balanced by a clean, mineral acid structure.

The very wine which defines the greater Nagambie Lakes district as a region that's so opportune for the the fleshy white styles of Cotes du Rhône. Marsanne was an early pioneer of Goulburn Valley viticulture, it has found a home away from home in the Victorian midlands, evolving into a refreshing, yet engagingly complex genre of table white that goes astonishingly well with fine food. Its radiant goldish hues presage a blossoming bouquet of peaches and white floral, a textured, mineral palate of juicy savouryness, almonds and nougat, before a refined, delicate finish.
