Helm is a boutique cool climate winemaker, one of the first ever commercial operations in the Canberra region. Winemaker Ken Helm AM received Order of Australia for his work with Riesling, contribution to the Australian wine industry, support of cool climate producers and service to the Canberra community. Helm placed the Canberra region firmly on the map for world class Riesling after the inaugural 1977 release won significant accolades. Grapes are vinified to a combination of traditional and modern techniques, a component of Helm Classic Dry is sourced from some of Canberra's oldest vines.

Greenish yellow colour. Striking floral bouquet reminiscent of apple blossom, clean and fresh, lifted floral notes. Richly flavoured with varietal citrus fruit characters, green apples and lime, exhibiting great delicacy, fine complexity and superb length. Balanced clean acid on the long fruit laden palate before a lingering aromatic finish.

Ken Helm was a founder of the International Riesling Challenge and was awarded the coveted Wolf Blass Award for his endeavours with Australian Riesling. The Halbtrocken style of Riesling, an astutely defined balance between the savouryness of cold climate Canberra, juicy apple orchard acidity and ripe grape tannin sweetness. Fragrantly aromatic with notes of honeyed peaches, florals and apricot, its silky smooth palate of sweet jonagold apples, packham pear, lime cordials and citrus zing, finishes long and clean, refreshingly dry.

Helm Premium Riesling
Murrumbateman
A single vineyard, strongly terroir wine by maestro Ken Helm AM, from fruit picked off neighbour Al Lustenberger's property, only released under the premium black label if it reaches the highest quality benchmarks. Since 2005 the collaboration of Lustenberger and Helm has claimed more than fourteen trophies. Ken Helm knows from great Riesling wines, he remains custodian of a heritage that's been handed down for generations, brought to the new world in the 1860s, by German growers who emigrated from the Rhineland to establish vineyards in Australia.

Riesling has been Ken Helm's passion for well over thirty years. He is a direct descendant of Rhine Valley vignerons and arguably understands Riesling better than anyone else in Australia. The Lustenberger vineyard sits at 650 metres, it faces north with an east to west row orientation, vertical shoot canopy managed, it's designed for maximum protection of fruit against sunburn, a main cause of inferior quality harvests and fruit taint. The soil consists of conglomerate volcanic ironstone and sandstone with a reasonable depth of friable over clay soils. Only those parcels of fruit which can display the essential qualities required of a national flagship Riesling wine are considered for inclusion into Black Label Helm.

Pale light straw colour. Fresh lifted floral nose showcasing topical lime and lemon citrus characters, mineral and spice. A soft acid palate displaying ferric notes, drying crystaline nature and slate, indicative of the iron soils content. Persistence of fruit with an elegant structure, offering all the classic varietal flavours of the finest slow ripened, cool climate Rieslings.

This scrumptuous wine is a tribute to the nearby historic Lenswood Coralinga homestead and surrounding apple orchards. The vineyard has a steep north to east facing slope, and the vines here grow vigorously, flowering generously and in general setting healthy crops. At 550 metres, Lenswood enjoys higher rainfall and humidity at the right time of year, cooler temperatures to retain high natural acidity and still enough sunshine to fully ripen grapes. Fermented in tank and bottled post vintage, unaged and unoaked to preserve the wine's superior fruit characters. Lenswood Coralinga captures the exotic aromatic qualities of Sauvignon Blanc grown to an exceptional Adelaide Hills site.

Pale yellow green hue. Sweet, delicate floral aromas of passionfruit, gooseberry and tropical fruits are punctuated by notes of fejoa and white currant. The palate is rich and minerally with intense flavours of citrus, gooseberry and tropical fruits, and just a hint of anise and caraway, the finish is clean, crisp and lingering.

The Henschke Eden Valley vineyard is located at an altitude of 500m and a rainfall of 700mm. Cyril Henschke purchased the property from Kenneth Crossman Thyer in 1966, and established a large planting of riesling at a time when Riesling was scarce and bonuses were being paid by the large wineries. The vineyard is effectively dry grown, although the soil moisture is monitored and in drier years drip irrigation is used to keep the vines physiologically active. The closely husbanded vines are planted to a northerly aspect on well drained deep sandy loam and silts. Eleanor is treated to a brisk vinification and bottled promptly after vintage, young and unoaked, to retain vital fruit character.

Vibrant pale straw with lime hues. Lifted, fragrant aromas of citrus, cumquats and kaffir lime with richer notes of ripe stonefruits, custard apple and white currant. Layered and focused, the palate shows generous ripe citrus, green apple and nectarine flavours, with a beautiful line of minerality balanced with fine acidity, leading to a long, crisp finish.
