$1799each $215DOZEN EACH DOZEN A collaboration between Ben Riggs and Tony Parkinson of Penny’s Hill, Black Chook is the bigger sibling from the Woop Woop wineworks. The backbone of Shiraz is sourced from good vineyards in McLaren Vale, sites that are nourished by a Mediterranean climate, winter dominant rainfall, warm, dry summers and low humidity. Further components from choice vineyards along the Limestone Coast infuse the palate with exciting blackcurrant and eucalypt characters. Vinified in a combination of fermenters, a period of maceration on skins intensifies the colour and extracts sleek tannins. Maturation in a selection of fine oak barrels serves to soften and integrate the palate, developing velvety mouthfeel.

Bright garnet colour. A plum and chocolate nose filled with hints of ripe berries and gentle spice. The palate is smooth and layered with rich flavours supported by supple vanilla oak and firm tannins, culminating in a long lingering finish of soft varietal plum and cherry characters, but not without the varietal punch of ground pepper and spice. A suitable accompaniement to flavourful braises and grilled meats.

Blackjack has claimed the eminent M.Chapoutier Trophy for Best Shiraz at the prestigious Le Concours des Vinson on no fewer than three occasions. Block 6 is a superior parcel of distinguished vines, renowned within the Bendigo district for producing a very high quality, intensely fruit driven Shiraz. Whilst directly adjacent to the original Blackjack plantings, Block 6 features a unique soil profile and a different clone. Block 6 always displays savoury Rhone structure and style, as opposed to the identifiably Aussie genre of Shiraz produced by Blackjack Vineyard.

$4799each $575DOZEN EACH DOZEN Blackjack are just south of Bendigo, on an easterly slope, in the old fruit growing district of Harcourt Valley at the foothills of Mt. Alexander. The microclimate of this small boutique winery is considerably cooler than other vineyards, ablessed by Indian summers, cool nights and warm clear days, allowing the grapes to slowly ripen. Soils are very old, unfertile granites, although part of Block 6 is on richer sandstone gravels. The hand husbanded, hand picked vines on Block 6 were planted in 1998 and are a different clone to the original Shiraz stock. Vinified in traditional open fermenters, hand plunged and aged in French oak barriques for twenty two months, bottled unfined after minimal filtration.

Ruby red, purple hues. Dark berry and cherry aromas, black currants, nutmeg and mixed spice, complex festive pudding notes. In grand central Victorian styling, the palate shows abundant spice and pepper as well as fully ripe berry fruits, lovely rounded mouthfeel and texture, subtle oak in support. Superb balance of crisp peppery acids and fine oak tannins, a very persistent, remarkably long and lingering finish.

One of Bendigo's salient marques, a wine of extraordinary personality, built around the prominent tannins of Cabernet Sauvignon, cushioned by the plummy softness from a smaller component of resplendent Merlot. The philosophy at Blackjack is to not interfere with the vinification, in a sense, to let the grapes and vintage do the talking. The overall character is determined by a unique combination of season and environment. A medium weighted, complex dry red with essential varietal definition and seamless fusion between fruit, tannins and oak.

$3199each $383DOZEN EACH DOZEN Blackjack vineyards are just south of Bendigo at the foothills of Mt Alexander, within the renowned orchard pastorals of Harcourt Valley. The climes are fortuitously cool, perfect for slow ripening and the complete development of intense flavour in wine grapes. Traditional open top fermenters and good old fashioned hand plunging are essential, making wine at Blackjack is hard yakka but it's a labour of love. American oak is the material of choice, fruit is vinified in traditional open fermenters, hand plunged and aged in the best 225L barriques for two years, no finings and minimal filtration are applied at bottling.

Garnet colour. Fully fragrant with blackberries and dusty cigarbox aromas, black olive and dried herbs alongside blackcurrant and red berry. A medium weight palate with sweet, clear cassis fruit, concentrated over a muscular framework and substantial tannin length, before a firm, fleshy finish. A fist of fruit inside a velvet glove, perfect alongside succulent roasts or tender pink lamb.

Major Thomas Mitchell surveyed the area around Bendigo in 1836, excited about his discovery of bountiful pastorals, initiating a migration of squatters and settlers into the august terroirs of Harcourt Valley. Renowned for its arcadian splendour and largess of orchard fruit, Harcourt is wine country, home to some of the most outstanding Victorian vineyards. Major's Line brings the fruit of Harcourt together with choice Blackjack parcels from Heathcote and Bendigo, plum, allspice and juicy black fruits over a trundle of succulent, toothy tannins.

Black Jack was a yankee sailor who jumped ship and joined the Castlemaine goldrush of the1850s. He remains a part of local follore. The McKenzie and Pollock families named their property after the adjacent road which commemorates the legend of Mr. Jack, planting vines on the site of an old apple orchard in the 1980s. Redolent of spice and savoury fruits, sweet and juicy on the palate, filled of plums and ripe dark berries over a backbone of fine, sweet and toasty American oak, opulent and lingering, the defining articulation of Bendigo Shiraz.

Bleasdale founder Frank Potts was one of the earliest and most industrious builders in the colony of South Australia, he constructed a robust and enduring system of locks and weirs in the 1850s, employed to this day for controlling the seasonal floods which breach the banks of Bremer River. The eponymously named Bremerview Shiraz is vinified from fruit grown to unique soils, a drier, full flavoured wine which shows the distinctive local characteristics of rich blackberry flavours, eucalypt aromaticness and earthy, warming tannins.

The management of the vines and the vinification of the fruit is very much a hands on affair by the fifth generation of a family that pionered and established Langhorne Creek as a premiere winegrowing region. The Potts family lead a dedicated winemaking and cellar team who are very proud of their work. Whilst Bleasdale is steeped in yesterday's history it has been outfitted with the latest technology. Today's winery still abides by the family traditions, retaining the philosophy of producing honest, consistent and reliable wines. Bremerview is treated to a year in a combination of seasoned and new French oak hogsheads and puncheons.

Deep, dark scarlet in colour. Intense varietal characters of dark cherries and ripe plums, complexed with fragrant spice aromas and toasty oak characters achieved by the extended maturation in tight grained American oak hogsheads and barriques. Generous fruit and supportive, mouthfilling tannins, Bremerview will continue to develop its rich earthy and chocolatey characters.

The traditional Australian claret style of Shiraz and Cabernet with a touch of Malbec. Bleasdale have been at it for generations, the masters at producing honest, reliable red wine. There's an urban myth among Bleasdale's community of local growers, that you have to have double letters in your name before you can be a winemaker at Langhorne Creek. Estate patriarch Lloyd Stanley Sticky Potts may have established the tradition. Potts was a motorcycling enthusiast all his life, the label depicts him practicing a broadside turn.

$1999each $239DOZEN EACH DOZEN Bleasdale was Langhorne Creek's first winery and remains today Australia's second oldest, family owned operation. The vineyards are situated on the fertile plains of Bremer River, which floods annually nourishing the soils. Historic cellars, constructed from eucalypt and limestone house a massive redgum lever press which fifth generation winemaker, Michael Potts still uses to crush grapes. Much of Langhorne Creek's fruit traditionally went into multi-regional blends and wasn't acknowledged until the 1990s when a group of growers, most notably Bleasdale, started promoting Langhorne Creek as a pure regional wine. Broadside is matured for a year in a selection French and American oak barrels.
