Ben Schild Reserve Shiraz
Barossa
Available in cartons of six
Johannes Hugo Bernard Ben Schild relocated his family, including a young Ed Schild, to Rowland Flat in the Barossa, establishing his vineyard circa 1952 after many years of grain farming in the Mallee. Following Ben's passing in 1956, fifteen year old Ed took over the reins of the family farm to continue the work started by his father. A careful sorting of the best grapes, picked off a single low yielding parcel planted by Ben Schild in the hills overlooking Lyndoch, provides the backbone of fruit for Schild Reserve, a stately Barossa Shiraz in true blockbuster styling.

A commemorative wine dedicated to the estate's patriarch and his foresight in founding the Schild wineworks. Harvested throughout the chill of early morning, grapes are crushed and given a thorough maceration for the optimal extraction of colour and tannins. Parcels are transferred to small open fermenters, inoculated and treated to a regimen of regular pumpovers, completing vinification to complete dryness at a relatively high alcohol content. Upon completion of a further course of maceration on skins, components are filled to a selection of seasoned and new, French, American and Hungarian oak barrels for two years, followed by an extended term of bottle age under the Schild cellars before release.

Deep ruby red. An intense creamy perfume of lifted violets and blue fruit, blueberry crumble and dark plums, hints of restrained black pepper spice. These all lead to a fine soft tannin framework, a palate of lifted, perfumed fruit over hints of well integrated oak, followed by a lengthy persistent, sweet tannin finish. A profound experience even in it's youth, displaying superb structure and finesse, an expression of the place whence it originates.

A backbone of Blewett Springs fruit, grown to rich shaly loams, is supported by components from the higher windy aspects around Willunga. Grapes are picked on the basis of colour and flavour, throughout the chill of night to enable a cold onset to fermentation. Parcels are crushed and vinified for up to ten days in small open top fermenters with neutral yeasts at around 20C. Ferments are hand pumped over, rack and returned to ensure optimum colour and tannin, followed by a soft airbag pressing to limit bitter extractions, achieving a fruit driven style. Treated to natural malolactic in a combination of new and seasoned French and American oak hogsheads, followed by a year's maturation.

Intense dark red with purple hue. Primary fruit aromas of plum, dark berries, nutmeg and mocha are complemented by vanillan oak characters. A full, rich palate with vibrant dark berry characters with overtones of mocha and spice. A well balanced wine with great depth, length and persistence of flavour. The subtle oak characters add further complexity as the palate finishes to soft, lingering tannins.

Berrys Bridge Pyrenees Cabernet Sauvignon
Pyrenees
A dry grown, single vineyard, hand crafted Pyrenees Cabernet Sauvignon. George Berry started his vineyard and orchard in 1862 on the banks of Carapooee Creek. Whilst some rootstock 110 to 140 years old can still be found, today's Berry Bridge are the fruit of plantings by Jane Holt and Roger Milner. Milner developed his passion for viticulture after several vintages at Chateau Reynella in the 1970s. He joined forces with Holt BAppSc(WineSc) & AssocDegAppSc(Wine-growing), and happily took on the challenge of re-developing the site.

Berrys Bridge has a very limited production of three super premium editions annually. The 6½ hectare vineyard and winery at the northern foothills of the Victorian Pyrenees, was first planted to vines in 1990 Rich red clay soils, warm summer days and cool nights provide lush ripe berries with intense colour, concentrated flavour and complex tannin structure. The area enjoys good winter/spring rainfalls and relatively dry summers. Good canopy management generally minimises disease. The hand picked fruit is treated to a small batch open fermentation, hand plunged and baskert basket pressed. Matured in fine grained oak barriques under temperature controlled conditions until bottling without filtration.

Deep crimson colour. The nose displays aromas of violets, cedar and luscious sweet cassis fruits. The full bodied palate is crammed with fruit, cedar, hints of olive and gorgeous fine, silky tannins that hold the finish for a considerable time. Despite its weight, this wine is surprisingly soft and supple at the finish with moderate acidity that balances the abundant tannin and fruit.

Berrys Bridge Pyrenees Shiraz
Pyrenees
The partnership of Roger Milner and Jane Holt emerged out of a juncture in mineral exploration, eventually leading to vintages at Passing Clouds and Chateau Reynella. They selected a site just outside of the main nexus of Pyrenees estates to plant vines. Ironically settling on the very terrain operated a century earlier by a pioneer named Berry who had also planted Shiraz.
