Grampians

Increasingly, Mount Langi are reaping the harvest of some sensational old rootstock, sown decades ago. These cossetted parcels of vine may be challenging to manage but they yield the finest Shiraz in the greater Grampians region. The pick of these younger, albeit fully mature blocks represent a significant inclusion in Cliff Edge Shiraz, delivering the requisite intensity of flavour, concentration and finesse, when assembled around a backbone of Mount Langi Ghiran's most precious old vines fruit.

A compilation of Shiraz from the distinguished Mount Langi Ghiran estate vineyards, including a parcel from the illustrious Langi Old Block. Fruit is harvested off vines averaging over twenty years of age, crushed into traditional open fermenters and treated to a fortnight of maceration on skins. A significant proportion of whole bunches are included to introduce complexity and infuse richness of tannin structure. Batches are inoculated to specialist yeasts NT50 and AWRI 796 for a traditional course of old world Pigeage, foot treaded with boots on, throughout the ferments. Upon completion to dryness, components are filled to 228 Litre French oak barriques for fifteen months maturation.

Dark garnet with purple rim. Black cherry, blueberry and mixed spice notes, violet florals in the background. Hints of pepper and soft oak spice are well integrated with the dark lush fruits. Blueberry, cherry and blackberry fruits dominate the palate, beautifully interwoven pepper and spice. Medium bodied silky tannins in perfect balance with the fruits and fine oak. Good length on a spice and savoury finish.

Mount Langi Ghiran Shiraz
Grampians
Available in cases of 6
Excellent Langtons Classification. A long and extended growing season means that the Mount Langhi property is one of the last blocks to be harvested in Victoria. Also of significance is that only the best berries are carefully picked off the precious old vines. The famous Langhi Ghiran is fermented in traditional open, shallow, concrete tanks, before ageing in a selection of the finest oak barrels. It is the strong synergy between a unique microclime, fastidious viticulture and proficiency at winemaking that can achieve the paragon which is Langi Ghiran.

Langhi Ghiran is selectively hand picked from the iconic Langi Old Block, grown to granitic sand over red clay podzols, established 1963 to the Swiss Clone Shiraz. By hand selecting the choicest grapes from these old vines, the finest parcels can be marked for inclusion. This method leaves a considerable portion of grapes on the vine, but avoids any shriveled or unripened berries. Moreover, this process responds to the natural variation within the vineyard block caused by aspect, warmth and exposure to wind and sunlight. After a course of hand plunging over three weeks skin contact and fermentation completely to dry, Langhi Ghiran is matured in a selection of seasoned and new French oak barriques.

Vibrant purple with dense purple rim. A complex wine showing blueberry, rapsberry and requisite Langi spice. Delicately perfumed, Langi Ghiran is lifted and with complex spice elements. Medium bodied, tightly wound acid balance with structured tannins which build on the palate. A core of ripe blueberry and raspberry fruits, overlayed by hints of perfumed spice box characters. Tight acidity adds definition and length.

Mount Mary Marli Russell RP2
Yarra Valley
Available in cases of 6
Established 1971, Mount Mary is a single vineyard estate, one of the first to be planted during the resurgence of interest in Yarra Valley wines. John and Marli Middleton became obsessed with the great French growths after visits to Burgundy and Bordeaux. They resolved to find a very special Yarra Valley site with a view to emulating the statuesque French styles. The topical cépage of Grenache and Mourverdre, Cinsault and Shiraz, matured sixteen months in an eclectic mix of good French oak, a slightly more fruit forward, earlier drinking style of Mt Mary.

Mount Mary Quintet
Yarra Valley
Available in cases of 6
Exceptional Langtons Classification. The low yielding, unirrigated vines at Mount Mary Vineyard are planted to grey sandy clay loams over broken shale soils. The percentage of each varietal included into Quintet every year is determined largely by the vagaries of vintage, factors such as fruit set and quality of harvest. An extravagantly rich cepage of Cabernet and Merlot, Malbec, Verdot and Cabernet Franc, Quintet exhibits an uncanny balance which drinks beautifully, a slight alcohol lift on finish will see it through for many years to come.

Grapes are hand picked and lightly crushed, destemmed and vinified in a mix of closed and open top fermenters for up to ten days while being treated to frequent pumpovers. Upon completion of malolactic and lees settling, the wine is transferred into a selection of new and seasoned oak barriques and larger format 1500L oak casks for a year, followed by a racking into seasoned barriques for a further ten months.

Deeply coloured, dark purple red. Lots of bright fruit, complex, a tighter, more savoury wine, earthy aromas and cedar are punctuated by raspberry notes. The palate is structured and linear, offering good weight of fruit, ripe red berry flavours and tobacco characters. A Yarra Valley of richness and length, firm tannins but very much in balance.

Major Thomas Mitchell, Surveyor-General of the colony of New South Wales, named Mount Pierrepoint after Major Charles Pierrepont who served with the 26th Regiment of Foot and fought in the Napoleonic Wars. All the fruit is estate grown and managed for low yields of up to 1½ tonne per acre. The grapes are hand picked, de-stemmed and fermented in open vats. Utmost attention is given to the juice during fermentation including regular, day and night hand plunging. The wine is then very gently basket pressed and placed into a balanced proportion of new and old French oak. Intervention is kept to a minimum enabling the natural character of the fruit to develop after a year's maturation in fine oak.

Bright scarlet in colour. Generous fruit aromas of black cherry, cranberries and red currants are wonderfully balanced by clove and smoky French oak. Powerful yet refined, seductive plush flavours greet the palate, an array of red and black berry fruit flavours are matched by finely grained tannins. Mid palate fleshy richness, generosity and length.

Hand picked grapes are crushed and cold soaked over twenty four hours to extract maximum colour and flavour. The juices are inoculated with a neutral yeast to initiate vinification, which takes place in open fermentation tanks. Half way through fermentation the cap was headed down to achieve maximum extraction. The wine was then pressed to finish primary and malolactic fermentation in barrel. Once complete, Maurice O'Shea is aged in a selection of the finest quality, exclusively French oak barriques for up to eighteen months. During maturation the wine is racked and returned twice to build complexity in the middle palate, mellow the tannins and allow the sweet berry fruit to emerge.

A medium intensity red with bright crimson hues. Generous primary fruit aromas of plums, raisin and raspberries with complex nuances of paprika, pepper and smoky chocolate oak. A medium weight palate dominated by a melange of ripe red raspberry and plums. Maurice O'Shea is dense with sweet fruits and ripe fruit tannin, generous, fine grained vanillin oak and hints of spicy paprika, forming layers of complexity. A fine, elegantly structured, classic Hunter Shiraz.
