613 - 624 of 757 Pinot Noir
Scotchmans Hill Pinot Noir
Bellarine
Available in cartons of six
One of Australia's most perennially feted and esteemed Pinot Noir, generously flavoured, brilliantly balanced, stylish and approachable. The Geelong/ Bellarine area has a long history of viticulture, which dates back to colonization by Swiss immigrants in the 1840s. Curiously, Pinot Noir is a wine that performs well in the cooler climes of the lower Swiss Alps. It remained however for Scotchmans Hill to establish Geelong as one of Australia's leading winegrowing regions, due in no small part to the quality and consistency of their splendid Pinot Noir.

From some of Victoria's finest Pinot Noir vines, planted to volcanic clays over basalt limestone subsoils, trained to vertical shoot positioning and moderated by Port Phillip Bay's revitalizing maritime winds on Bellarine Peninsula. Clones MV6, 114 Burgundy, 115 Burgundy & D5V12 up to thirty years of age, yielding 1½kg per vine, 1½tn per acre. Grapes are hand picked, destemmed to small fermeters and cold soaked for five days, accentuating fruit flavour. The musts are wild fermented for a week, pressed and racked to barrel for completion and malolactic. The finished wine is matured for up to a year in a selection of new to four year old French Troncais oak barriques.

Deep garnet hue. Lifted, perfumed nose, violet notes, plum and dark fruit, complemented by beetroot, spice and earthy characters, cedar oak in the background. Full complex and rich palate with fresh raspberry and dark fruit flavours, beetroot and spice notes. A touch of sappiness and earthy tones throughout the mid palate, rounded out by cedar oak. The structure is defined by firm acid and fine grained tannins, contributing roundness and length.

Shaw Smith Pinot Noir
Adelaide Hills
Available by the dozen
Pinot Noir is the most temperamental of wine grape varieties and remains the ultimate challenge for many makers. Shaw + Smith have accepted the challenge, albeit in a highly exacting, small batch way. Site selection, the right clonal mix, miniscule yields and fastidious vineyard management are essential to success. A single vineyard wine from vines planted at a density of 2780 per hectare, to a select mixture of Burgundy's highly regarded 777 clone, as well as MV6, the backbone to many of Australia's finest editions of Pinot Noir.

Shaw and Smith are an alliance between cousins Martin Shaw and Michael Hill-Smith, heirs to one of Australia's great winemaking legacies. The estate vineyard is located on the Shaw + Smith property at Balhannah, the soil structure being brown loam over red clay and schist. Hand pruned, with vertical shoot positioned canopies, the yields are miniscule, just 1½ tonnes per hectare. The hand harvested grapes are de-stemmed and lightly crushed into open, two tonnes fermenters. A cold maceration of four to five days precedes vinification and hand plunging six to eight times per day. A course of malolactic and term of maturation ensues in a combination of new and older French oak barriques.

Bright, deep scarlet in colour. A modern Pinot with characteristic red fruit aromas in the strawberry/ raspberry/ cherry spectrum. Palate is mid weight, yet suprisingly supple and rich. Fruit focused at this stage and will continue to develop additional layers of expression.

Soul Growers Serendipitous Pinot Noir
Barossa
Soul Growers are the work of four good mates, together they represent a century of combined industry experience, employing the knowledge and skill, generously shared by some of the nation's most illustrious winemaking legends. Taking a slight sojourn from their treasured gardens in the Barossa, they accidentally stumbled across a little block of Pinot Noir, secreted away from the road side and hidden within a gully of the Adelaide Hills. A chance meeting with the grower and a handful of barrels were crafted, open fermented, basket pressed and traditionally aged in very old French casks.

Spring Vale Estate Pinot Noir
East Coast

William Lyne arrived in Van Diemen's Land on October of 1826. His descendants established Spring Vale in 1875 and have pursued farming ventures in this beautiful area of Tasmania's east coast ever since. Rodney and Lyn Lyne planted 6.6 hectares of vine at Spring Vale, principally Pinot Noir in 1986. Further plantings were made in the following years, more Pinot Noir and more Pinot Noir again, with a splash of Pinot Meunier for variety. Today, Spring Vale can lay claim to the most coveted editions of Van Diemen's Land Pinot Noir.

There are no corners cut in the vineyard management and winemaking at Spring Vale. The final cut of Pinot Noir is made up of approximately twenty individual components, all of which represent different clones, different vineyard blocks, different rows on various parts of the blocks, a choice of yeasts, varying fermentation temperatures and a number selections of oak. Grapes are destemmed into open pots for a few days of cold soak, inoculated with yeasts RC212 and treated to a regular plunge throughout the vinification to gently extract tannins. Upon completion to dryness, batches are pressed to a high proportion of new French oak barriques for nine months maturation.

Medium cherry colour. Aromatic nose of lavender and allspice, dried herbs and subtle toasty oak. Seamless, rich, dark cherry flavour on a sweet middle palate, a fine line running from front to back. Abundance of fine and even, powdery tannins before a long, balanced finish. An elegant style with deceptively easy to appreciate complexity.
