Torbreck founder David Powell is a frequenter of fashionable wine bar Les Juveniles whenever he's in Paris. Conversely, the proprietor of Les Juveniles spends time with Powell whenever he's wine trekking around the Barossa. A delightfully fruit forward accord of Grenache, Shiraz and Mourverdre, crafted from fruit grown to old and very old Barossa vineyards, judiciously fashioned to an early drinking Rhône Valley styling, principally for the enjoyment of bohemians and artistes, épicuriens et bon vivants.

Two thirds Grenache with the balance of Shiraz and Mourverdre, assembled from a collation of harvests, off vineyards between forty and a hundred fifty years of age, grown to the premiere Barossa districts of Seppeltsfield and Gomersal, Moppa and Marananga, Ebeneezer and Koonunga Hill. Fruit is all hand picked, passed over the sorting table and treated to a term of cold soak. Parcels are separately vinified in traditional fermenters and assembled into a single wine for completion of ferments and natural malolactic. The finished cuvée is bottled without fining or filtration in November.

Bright red hues. Perfumes of strawberry and spiced black plums, the energy and intensity of freshly fermenting must. Ripe juicy flavours of blackberry, spiced cherries, minerals and Asian spices wrapped around a skeleton of fresh acidity and fine mineral laden tannins. Soft and sensuous, ready to enjoy immediately on release, ideally alongside crusts and fresh baked goods, cured hams and cold roast duck.

Mataro wines are known for their substantial tannin profile, Kyloe means highland steer, a wild and hardy beast. Torbreck take the pick of crop from the finest blocks in Barossa Valley, each one picked to a different schedule determined by individual ripeness, ensuring complete flavour development, essential to retaining upfront fruit characters in the finished wine. An extended term of age in well seasoned barrels, tames the masculine tannins without infusing conspicuous oak, for an old world style of Mataro offering an intensity of pure varietal eloquence.

$3299each $395DOZEN EACH DOZEN A compilation of Mataro from splendid sites in the ancient Barossa winegrowing districts of Marananga and Ebenezer, Seppeltsfield and Moppa, Greenock and Gomersal. All parcels are picked at different times during vintage to achieve harvests of perfectly ripened fruit. Bunches are destemmed into a mix of large oaken vats and traditional open top concrete fermenters, juice are gently pumped over the cap and skins twice daily throughout a week and more of vinification. Upon completion, batches are basket pressed and naturally settled before racking into a selection of older, prior use French oak hogsheads, for two years maturation and assemblage without fining or filtration.

On a highland farm, the array of barns, stables and outbuildings is known as a steading. Steading GSM has long been David Powell's favourite wine within the Torbreck stable because of the old, gnarled bush vines that produce its core. Grenache, Mataro and Shiraz grown to ancient sites at Moppa and Marananga, Seppeltsfield and Ebenezer, Gomersal and Greenock, perform brilliantly in their own right. When assembled however, their strengths coalesce into a wine of remarkable structure and bucolic grace.

$4599each $551DOZEN EACH DOZEN Steading is an ode to the great old vines which escaped government sponsored uprootings of the 1980s. There are still ancient Barossa vineyards planted to Grenache, Mataro and Shiraz, brought over from Europe on original pre-phyloxera rootstock. Share farming agreements with the Barossa's best growers ensures access to these precious sites. There are over forty different parcels, all vinified and matured separately. Grapes are destemmed into open top wooden and concrete vats, gently pumped over for a week, basket pressed and treated to malolactic, racked into seasoned French oak hogsheads for two years maturation, followed by assemblage and bottling without fining or filtration.

Deep ruby red, violet hues. Delicate aromas of truffle, five spice and spring flowers, supported by a rich core of licorice, saddle leather and herbes de Provence. Burgundian in style, the palate is elegant and pure with subtle notes of crushed cherries, cedar and earth, all neatly wound by a taut spine of acidity over a length of ripe supple tannins. A wine of amazing complexity and integration, which will continue to evolve and unfold.

The Turkey Flat vineyards are unique, in that the estate can trace their first plantings back to early settlement in the 1840s. The site was acquired by Gottlieb Ernst Schulz in 1865, a successful butcher who established a thriving business. His descendants are still there to this day, working amongst the vines. Butchers Block is fashioned to a crowd pleasing style, Mourvèdre provides the backbone, Shiraz adds flavour, Grenache brings rustic spice and dark morello fruit. Balance is essential, each grape plays a role, yet nothing competes for your attention.

It is a place where the Turkey Flat team, assemble to bring together the various components of a wine, they give each part an opportunity to speak, to articulate and define its contribution to the greater whole. Parcels of Shiraz, Grenache and Mourverdre are separately handled, crushed into a mix of seasoned oak vessels and treated to a term of cold soak for optimal extraction of flavour, colour and tannin. Upon completion of ferments, batches are rested for spontaneous malolactic, followed by a term of eighteen months in French oak hogsheads and larger format oak vats before the final assemblage.

Bright garnet red. Good fruit on the nose, black berries and plum, spiced olives, bay leaf and savouryness. A fully aromatic, subtly structured wine, Shiraz providing a backbone of solid tannins and luscious depth of flavour, Grenache contributes a dash of spice and cherry sweetness, whilst Mourvedre adds extra layers to the tannin, as well as a measure of fragrance and an element of funk. A match to braised game with herbs, olive and tomato.

Established in the 1840s and in continuous ownership by the Schulz family since 1870, Turkey Flat at Tanunda was a habitat of wild Australian Bustards, a favourite bush food of locals and early settlers. Younger parcels of Shiraz are selected for spice and lift, a fresher and more layered version of Barossa Valley, a component of whole bunches are added for structure and seasoned, sent to a selection of well seasoned, pre loved Turkey Flat casks, to encourage the vital fruit characters to sing.

Bright cherry red. Florals of violet, glace fruits, peppered plums and cherry ripe. Raspberries to the fore, a palate of blueberries and white pepper spice, a seamless finish of ripe fleshy stonefruits and dark currants on a length of lively licorice tannins. Simply a modern, fresh and fruit driven wine, a lighter, brighter style of Shiraz for forward drinking alongside grills and meaty Al fresco fare.

Encounters with pure Mataro wines are rare. Mataro thrives in the hot and dry conditions of summer, a very late comer in budbreak and ripening, Barossa is one of the few parts of Australia with a clime which allows a full and complete ripening of Mataro grapes. Barossa Valley can also be proud as the original Australian home of ancient Mataro vineyards, some of the oldest in the world, established by Lutheran pioneers during early settlement. Turkey Flat's vines were amongst the first ever planted in Barossa Valley.

$3499each $419DOZEN EACH DOZEN It is here at Turkey Flat, on the banks of Tanunda Creek in the Hundred of Moorooroo where wild bush turkeys once roamed, that Johann Friedrich August Fiedler planted his first vines in 1843. Grapes are macerated on skins over the course of a fortnight or more, inoculated to auspicious Mataro friendly yeasts and vinified at warmer temperatures. Treated to a spontaneous malolactic fermentation in barrel, followed by an extended term of maturation in a combination of new and prior use French oak hogsheads and puncheons.

Turkey Flat are still the luminary, having taken charge of the great Aussie Rose revival. The winemaking team take the task of making Australia's best Rose very seriously, dedicating an entire vineyard to ensure the continuity of style. An auspicious cepage of Grenache and Shiraz, Dolcetto and Cabernet Sauvignon, slightly drier than most of her siblings, a princess in pink, displaying a complexity and balance that's very rare indeed, a winning style that's enjoyed around the nation by the most discerning Rose enthusiasts.

$3099each $371DOZEN EACH DOZEN Batches are de stemmed and crushed into open top fermenters, a portion are added as whole bunches, Shiraz is pumped over three times daily through the peak of ferments, Grenache and Mourvèdre are cold soaked and lightly plunged. Components spend a fortnight on skins, all pressings are rack and returned to the free run, some barrels are treated to extended lees contact. Batches are filled to a selection of older French oak foudre, hogsheads and puncheons for a year's maturation.

Bright red colour. Bright raspberry bouquet, dark cherrie and rose petal, jelly crystals and the sweet savouryness of deli meats. Bright and vibrant on the palate, jellied fruits, cherry drops and strawberries cream, rose water notes, a lovely interplay of creamy/ leesy textures, the gentle, chalky tannins run the length of palate, finishing with hints of white pepper, aromatic cedar oak and hints of smoked meats.

G7 for seven generations of Barossa viticulture by the Scholz family. Establishing a mixed farm of livestock and orchards in 1845, Johann Scholz planted one of the first Barossa vineyards along the alluvial banks of Para River. Established 1970, the Mataro block grows on a gentle, east facing slope, away from North Para River. An ideal site, invigorated by gully winds for a slow ripening of intense berry spice flavours in the grapes. Mourverdre of merit, magnificence and mark, a big bucolic nose, earthyness, savouryness, currants and strawberry, olives, marketgarden and mint.

Few Australian winemakers have had as much experience with GSM as Yalumba. Their learned team are always very excited about this old world style. Parcels are collated from good Barossa vineyards, separately picked and vinified in small batches, before being aged in a selection of large and small oak vats, puncheons and barriques. All parts are encouraged to mellow and integrate, while creating texture and infusing complexity. Layered and supple, spiced red and black berry fruits are drizzled with moreish chocolateynerss, long and lingering on a finish of velvet textured tannins.
