Thistledown Vagabond Grenache
McLaren Vale
Available in cartons of six
From three old, dry grown bush blocks at Blewitt Springs, planted to a benignant terroir of deep ironstone sands. Parcels are separately picked at ideal ripeness, crushed and treated to a measure of whole bunch or wild yeast ferments, regularly hand plunged in a mix of concrete vats and open vessels, followed by a course of age in seasoned oak puncheons. So very redolent of wild cherry, violets, rosemary and spice, its polished, multi layered palate, lined of loquacious, liquorice tanins, textural towards a lengthy aromatic finish.

Tim Adams The Fergus
Clare
Available in cartons of six
The Tim Adams label was born out of a venture to make small oak casks and limited amounts of wine. After three decades of consistently superb vintage releases, Adams is counted as one of the leading winemakers in Valley Clare. Fergus was a neighbour who was kind enough to sell his Grenache to Tim in 1993 during a desperate shortage. Tim quickly realized that what had been achieved through a serendipity of logistics was to have real potential as a full bodied, soft style with immediate approachability and splendid compatibility to good food.

A collation of harvests Tempranillo and Grenache, sourced from the Ladera, Sheoak and Mahons vineyards in Valley Clare, a choice parcel of Malbec is added for complexity. Grenache remains on the vine until fully mature, grapes are harvested late and crushed on to batches of drained Tempranillo skins for a week of vinification. The fermenters are topped and closed for another week prior to pressing. Components are racked several times before filtration and transfer to seasoned French and American oak hogsheads for an extravagant two years. Components are assembled and bottled without cold stabilizing, which may forn a harmless crystalline deposit.

Dark scarlet purple hue. Ripe berry and cherry fragrances, licorice and garden spearmint over spiced oak notes. Lifted red berry flavours, complexed by Grenache spice and given extra back palate astringency by virtue of the other more tannic grapes. A mouth filling wine that will go nicely with turkey and duck, gamey meats and lamb.

Designed for the fashionistas who attend Juveniles, enthusiasts who really know their Rhône Valley wines. Two thirds Grenache with the balance of Shiraz and Mourverdre, assembled from a collation of harvests, off vineyards between forty and a hundred fifty years of age, grown to the premiere Barossa districts of Seppeltsfield and Gomersal, Moppa and Marananga, Ebeneezer and Koonunga Hill. Parcels are separately vinified in traditional fermenters and assembled into a single wine for completion of ferments and natural malolactic. The finished cuvée is bottled without fining or filtration in November.

Bringing the forgotten practice of share farming back to the Barossa has secured for Torbreck a regular supply of fruit from some grand old vineyards. Les Amis is an exclusively Grenache wine, vinified from fruit grown to the southern facing Homes site at Seppeltsfield, established 1901. Vines stand only inches from the ground and grapes are painstakingly picked. Bunches are destemmed into a single cement vat for several days of ferment being basket pressed directly into new French oak barriques. After eighteen months, the best barrels are marked for inclusion into Les Amis, racked and assembled. The finished wine is left to settle before bottling without the use of fining or filtration.

Dense, saturated ruby/ purple hue. Delicate scents of Chinese five spice, smoke, white flowers and roasted herbs precede a dense, brooding core of black cherry, coal and scorched earth. The well delineated palate offers tremendous texture and combines glorious fruit purity with subtle complexities and savoury elegance. Multi dimensional and incredibly intricate, Les Amis finishes on a length of crisp acidity and beautifully ripe, polished tannins.

Torbreck Steading GSM
Barossa
Available by the dozen
On a highland farm, the array of barns, stables and outbuildings is known as a steading. Steading GSM has long been David Powell's favourite wine within the Torbreck stable because of the old, gnarled bush vines that produce its core. Grenache, Mataro and Shiraz grown to ancient sites at Moppa and Marananga, Seppeltsfield and Ebenezer, Gomersal and Greenock, perform brilliantly in their own right. When assembled however, their strengths coalesce into a wine of remarkable structure and bucolic grace.

Steading is an ode to the great old vines which escaped government sponsored uprootings of the 1980s. There are still ancient Barossa vineyards planted to Grenache, Mataro and Shiraz, brought over from Europe on original pre-phyloxera rootstock. Share farming agreements with the Barossa's best growers ensures access to these precious sites. There are over forty different parcels, all vinified and matured separately. Grapes are destemmed into open top wooden and concrete vats, gently pumped over for a week, basket pressed and treated to malolactic, racked into seasoned French oak hogsheads for two years maturation, followed by assemblage and bottling without fining or filtration.

Deep ruby red, violet hues. Delicate aromas of truffle, five spice and spring flowers, supported by a rich core of licorice, saddle leather and herbes de Provence. Burgundian in style, the palate is elegant and pure with subtle notes of crushed cherries, cedar and earth, all neatly wound by a taut spine of acidity over a length of ripe supple tannins. A wine of amazing complexity and integration, which will continue to evolve and unfold.
