A dry and mild climate combines with ancient red soils to produce an effort of telling regionality. Five separate blocks are handled as fourteen individual parcels. A combination of destemmed grapes and whole bunches are vinified in a mix of open and closed fermenters. Upon completion, batches are pressed and transferred immediately to barrel for malolactic, followed by three rackings over a term of seventeen months ageing in a selection of French oak barriques. Half the barrels are culled over time, only the very best are included into the final wine.

Dark dense red. Powerful nose of blackberry and raspberry with nuances of cedar, chocolates and spice. Flavours are a subtle combination of dark berry fruits integrated with complex oak and mixed spice. Low night time temperatures contribute to vine balance and excellent berry development. Picking is all done by hand, fruit is delivered to the winery where juices are extracted from the grapes by pumpover in closed tanks and hand plunging in open bins to extract optimum colour and tannin. The finished wine is matured sixteen months in a selection of French and American oak barriques.

One of the earliest commercial winemaking operations ever established in Victoria. Heathcote Winery can also boast some of the oldest Australian plantings of Viognier. The winery building dates back to 1854 when it serviced miners seeking their fortune in the heady days of the Victorian gold rush. Shiraz with a splash of Viognier is predominantly sourced from estate vineyards on the periphery of Heathcote township, harvested just when the chunky tannins, cherry acids, natural grape sugars and bold red Heathcote earth characters are at their peak.

Upon completion, Mail Coach is pressed and matured up to seventeen months in a selection of new and seasoned French oak barriques, crafted by a range of cooperages to facilitate complexity and encourage components to achieve their full potential.

Single vineyard wine from the Newlans Lane block at the very heart of Heathcote, the original block of Shiraz planted to the earliest survey of red Cambrian soils, established for the historical Heathcote wineworks. Slaughterhouse Paddock is the second oldest block of vine in all Heathcote, originally a cattle yard adjacent to the township meatworks, its soils enriched for viticulture by the passage of livestock. Hand picked whole bunches are open fermented in the traditional old world style, building sound structure and infusing splendid weight of fruit. A fleshy Terra rosa palate of intensity and concentration, preceded by peppermint and eucalypt perfumes, adorned by the dulcet vanilla sweetness of new American oak.

Kennedy is all about fastidious viticulture, pruning is painstakingly applied, to husband vines which are perfectly balanced for yields of evenly ripened fruit. Each separate parcel is hand picked over the course of several days, de stemmed into small open vessels for indigenous yeast ferments and a course of gentle plunging, pressed to oak and treated to a natural malolactic during the spring. Only the best barrels are selected for the Kennedy estate label, assembled and matured for a year in a selection of the finest French oak barriques.

John and Patricia Kennedy make a very special wine. Work in the vineyard is focused on unravelling intricacies within their site, identifying those areas which produce the best fruit. Deep purple red. Fragrant cherry and summer berries, brown spices and subtle oak notes. Mixed spices, nutmeg, pepper and black currants are soon filling the glass. Sweet blood plum and currants are immediately revealed on the front palate followed by a nice touch of spice. The ripe flavours are supported by fine supple tannins and just the right amount of acidity along the entire length of palate through to the finish.
