Madfish Riesling
Great Southern
Available by the dozen
A sensational wine which articulates the splendour of Great Southern's auspicious clime. Fruit is sourced from vineyards at Mount Barker, Frankland River and the Porongurups. Mount Barker produces Riesling with a racy lime/ lemon character overlaid by talc and bath salts. Frankland River provides a little more generosity, riper flavours with a perfumed nose. The Porongurups yield tight and elegant Riesling wines with wonderfully floral nose and mineral palate. Match your Madfish with sushi or a grill of the freshest seafood.

A popular choice the world over, made by the eminent team at Howard Park, capturing the freshness and vitality of the wine friendly climes in Australia's southwest. The Porongurup ranges are a small sub region of elevated vineyards that grow particularly fine Riesling. The winters here are bitterly cold and the soils mean, ideal for the production of crisp, clean fruit for MadFish. Harvests are immediately processed to ensure the highest quality juices without phenolics. All batches are kept separate and treated to a cool fermentation, retaining maximum fruit character without cluttering the wine. The final assemblage is fashioned to achieve a fuller and more generous rendering of Great Southern Riesling. Alcohol 12.5%

Bright pale straw, green hues. The nose is wonderfully aromatic, showing lime skin and white citrus flower notes. An upfront burst of floral and citrus juice flavours leading to a tight and crisp middle palate of great focus. The linear and long dry finish is complemented by restrained floral characters and lingering lime pith flavours. Great with freshly shucked Albany oysters.

In the spirit of the relaxed West Australian lifestyle, MadFish wines are without pretension and without fuss. The team at MadFish believe that good viticultural management grows healthier fruit and makes a better wine, while maintaining a healthier environment. The classic regional blend of white varietal grapes, Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc are treated to a controlled vinification without the interference of any oak to allow the complex fruit characters to dominate. Low fermentation temperatures achieve a maximum retention of fruit flavour and aromatics while ensuring the finished wine is completely dry. Early bottling has also preserved the fresh fruit flavours and vibrant characters of the vineyard.

Pale straw hue with tints of green. A wonderfully aromatic nose, bursting with fruity esters. The palate, like the nose, is also complex with many layers of fruit flavours and a clean fine structure. Again the riper fruit characters balance well with the leaner more elegant citrus flavours. The finish is generous and long with a clean acid thrust.
Madfish Shiraz
Margaret, Great Southern, Geographe
Available by the dozen
According to local folklore, the tranquillity of Mad Fish Bay is broken when two tides meet, driving schools of small fish to go quite completely bonkers, as they jump about to avoid being gobbled up by the incoming tide of larger, hungry fish. Exquisitly balanced, highly polished, affable and quaffable, a delicious red wine that's mouthfilling, approachable and complete, fashioned from fruit grown to a corner of Australia that does Shiraz so very well.

A key to the quality of Howard Park and Madfish wines, is an uncompromising respect for the sanctity of the soil and health of the vine. Fruit is sourced from good vineyards in Margaret River, Great Southern and Geographe, all of which have become highly conspicuous throughout the world of wine for the quality of Shiraz. Following harvest and the crush, the fermenting musts are treated to a course of traditional pumpovers for optimal extraction of colour, flavour and tannin. Batches are pressed directly to French barriques for a year's maturation, achieving a wine packed full of ripe fruit flavours, supported by fine, savoury tannins and rich, toasted vanillin oak notes. Alcohol 13.5%

Bright dark crimson red colour. The wine jumps from the glass with aromatic black cherry, blueberry and chocolate bouquets. Palate of complex flavours, roasted coffee beans, mulberries and peppered plum, supported by a length of dusty, savoury tannins. Offers the smoothness and ripe fruit flavours to make it immediately approachable, the perfect partner to relaxed dining.

The history of Chardonnay at Picardy began when Bill and Sandra Pannell were fortunate enough to meet M. Vincent LeFlaive of the famous Puligny Montrachet, during his visit in 1989. Believing that Pemberton was ideal for the most refined styles of Chardonnay, Pannell decided to research the situation with respect to clones. Several hundred were trialled in Burgundy and four were selected, 76 and 95, 96 and 277, on the basis of the quality as opposed to yield. Twenty cuttings of each were imported into Western Australia, held in quarantine for the growing season of 1993 to 1994, replanted into the Picardy property the following spring. Picardy now has in excess of a thousand vines of each.

Bejewelled yellow colour. Bright and fresh, redolent with nectarine, while the oak adds a hint of spice and grilled nuts, very elegant, exhibiting minerally flavours, with the refinement and length of the great Burgundies, finishing on a note of citrus. The highlight is a purity of fine chardonnay fruit flavours, Picardy appeals as the quality of West Australian fruit shines within a fine Chablis styling.
