Scarpantoni Block 3 Shiraz
McLaren Vale
Available in cartons of six
From the home of the 2007 Jimmy Watson, the fruit of McLaren Vale's illustrious Block 3 has also claimed Winestate Shiraz of Year and hotly contested VISY Great Australian Shiraz Challenge. Estate founder Domenico Scarpantoni established a peerless reputation as vitculturalist during distinguished tours of duty at Seaview and Thomas Hardy Tintara. Block 3 sets the benchmark in McLaren Vale Shiraz, vinified from grapes hand picked off gnarled and parched, dry grown old vines, seventy years and more of age.

Scarpantoni pride themselves on making wine from fruit grown to their own vineyards. The sites are scattered around McLaren Vale, all enjoy their own soil profiles, aspects and exposure, factors which influence the grapes, ultimately defining the character of the finished wines. Scarpantoni's vineyards were planted by the family themselves, except for one. Block 3 was established in the 1940s, now source to a pure, single vineyard wine. Block 3 runs along the right hand side of the Scarpantoni wineworks, on a patch of sandy soil which retains moisture at lower depths, ensuring natural nourishment for the deep rooted vines throughout the most severe of droughts. It yields a harvest of the most remarkable quality Shiraz.

Inky purple/ black in colour. Exquisite bouquet of ripe, aromatic blackcurrant, liquorice and nutty, toasted oak. The palate is full and rich with coffee, cassis and spice characters balanced by fine tannins and elegant acidity. Ripe blackberries, licorice, cinnamon and mocha are the hallmark Block 3 characters. To accompany slowly braised osso bucco or middle eastern seasoned lamb stew and couscous.

Domenico Scarpantoni worked for Thomas Hardy at Tintara, later becoming vineyard manager for Seaview in McLaren Vale. He was responsible for the contoured vineyards that Seaview were renowned for in the 1960s. Vines on Brothers Block are grown to a terroir of deep, free draining sandy soil over ironstone subsoils which impart a luscious red fruit character and distinctive Cabernet expression to the wine. At harvest the grapes are picked based on their developing flavour profiles and fermented in four tonne batches. All parcels are kept separate throughout vinification, barrel fermented and matured up to sixteen months in a combination of new and seasoned French oak hogsheads until assemblage.

Deep, ferrous red. A complex bouquet of blackcurrant, mint and spice with hints of sweet, toasty vanillin oak. The palate is soft and round with elegant, well integrated fruit and oak leading to a long, persistent finish. It's big and fruity, stylish and dry, with rich berry fruit flavours, cedary spicy French oak and plush lined tannins. A McLaren Vale Cabernet like no other, the perfect accompaniment to meats and fine cheese.

Domenico Scarpantoni originally worked for Hardy Wines and Seaview. To this day, Scarpantoni is very much a family business with every step of production, from viticulture to the packaged product done entirely on the premises. The last two decades have seen major expansions to the Scarpantoni Estate, the quality of the wines, whilst excellent in earlier vintages, has reached new highs. There have been renewed plantings of premium Shiraz, a wetlands development, a fully renovated winery and cellar door, and the restoration of the estate's historical homestead. The Scarpantoni family maintain complete control over every stage of the winemaking process, to ensure vintages of the highest standard.

Deep red-purple colour. Aromas of licorice and of cherry, leather and mint and spice characters, followed by leaf and berry aromas. Ripe blackcurrants and plums interweave with attractive cedary new oak and mocha barrel ferment influences, while the palate is generous and smooth - a delightful marriage of ripe fruit with sweet oak.

Mostly Shiraz, a third of Cabernet, the balance in Merlot. Grapes are picked purely on the basis of flavour profile and fermented in six to eight tonne batches. Each block of fruit is pressed and kept separate for maturation, every parcel of wine is tested to determine barrel type ranging from new, to five year old French and American oak hogsheads. Components are individually processed and aged in barrel for twelve months, achieving a soft and supple style that oozes with rich fruit and hints of toasty oak. After a year in barrel, the rigorous task of assemblage is undertaken over the course of several weeks, more than twenty different parcels are assessed to determine the final School Block.

Dark in colour. An intense bouquet of blackcurrant and spice with enticing hints of cherries and violet. Rich black fruits on the nose and palate, plenty of plums, licks of chocolate, pepper and dried aromatic spice. The palate is soft and supple with rich berry fruit flavours seamlessly supported by fine tannins leading to a lingering finish.
