Adelaide Hills are but an hour's drive from Bleasdale but the style of Chardonnay grown to the cool ripening aspects of elevated, undulating hillsides is a world away from that grown to the Bleasdale property at Langhorne Creek. The Adelaide Hills style is distinctly crisper and more aromatic, one could say it even tastes chilled at room temperature. An extravagant course of barrel ferments, wild yeast vinification and lees exposure makes a richly textured Chardonnay wine with good colour, savoury vanillan aromatics and solid palate structure.

He named his property after Reverend John Ignatius Bleasdale who advocated a sober, wine drinking community to the exclusion of hard spirits. A sound business case indeed. Sauvignon Blanc grapes are hand picked from choice Adelaide Hills sites and gently whole bunch pressed directly to French oak barrels. Fermentations are inititated by wild indigenous yeasts from the vineyard still present on the skins, followed by a regimen of lees stirring battonage and nine months maturation before bottling.

Light straw yellow colour. The big, steely nose displays complex aroma of stonefruits and citrus, almond, tapioca and meal. A creamy palate with layers of melon, nectarine and golden delicious flavours, a touch of biscuit and lemon/ almond notes before a crisp, drying and savoury fruit filled finish. The distinguished Laira property was established by Captain Stentiford in 1893 on a premium parcel of choice Coonawarra Terra rossa soil. Pioneer and patron of the Coonawarra, Eric Brand became custodian of the vineyard more than half a century later. Today, Brand's Laira are widely regarded as some of the region's best plantings, producing wines of exceptional quality as evidenced by their consistent wine show success. The distinctive small berries of the vineyard lead to below average yields, translating into wines with intense flavours.

$2149each $257DOZEN EACH DOZEN Laira is one of the nation's most enduring vineyards, established at a time when Coonawarra was a communal agricultural district called Penola Fruit Colony. Parcels of Chardonnay are harvested throughout the cool of early morning and immediately pressed, only the purest free runs are retained. After a spell of cold settling, juices are racked to fermenters and inoculated for a primary course of vinification. After a partial ferment, batches are transferred to a selection of seasoned and new French oak barrels for completion. Components remain on yeast lees for nine months maturation, followed by assemblage of the best barrels into the final wine, fining and filtration before bottling.

Pale straw gold hues. Vibrant nose of classic peach melon and nectarine fruit supported by creamy cashew nut oak. Ripe, rich pure stone fruit palate, melon characters are accompanied by creamy nutty oak, balanced with refreshing acidity. A long fine finish of lingering fruit flavours. The Chardonnay of choice to mate with fine gourmandise, blackened flounder or walnut and tarragon crusted trout.

Bream Creek are owned and operated by one of Tasmania's leading viticulturalists. The hand managed vines are grown to salubrious soils on one of the most spectacular coastal locations in Tasmania. The estate's focus is to produce small quantities of pristine fruit which can be vinified into wines which capitalise on the stunning flavours that originate from predominantly old vines. The stirling efforts of Bream Creek are crafted to drink beautifully on release. Chardonnay is treated to partial malolactic fermentation and lees stirring to achieve texture and elegance.

Their fastidiously husbanded vines consistently produce low yields of the highest quality grapes. The original consortium established five hectares of vines in 1973 which included some of Tasmania's earliest plantings of Chardonnay. The property enjoys a cool frost free spring, long sunny summer days with sea breezes and an extended autumn ripening period. Surrounded by neighbouring forest and windbreaks, the vineyard is nicely sheltered from strong and cold winds, perfect for producing crisp cool climate wines. Crop yields are kept very modest, the focus being on small berries and small bunches.

Bright pale straw in colour. The bouquet boasts white nectarine and peach with some subtle citrus characters. The palate is tightly structured with good texture and an array of spicy tropical fruit combined with freshly baked bread. Judicious use of oak combines to produce elegance with a long, firm, refreshing finish. Enjoy alongside crackling roast pork or seafood, pasta or poultry.

A fruit filled Chablis style, redolent of white peach, grapefruits and nectarine, exquiste balance throughout, an intensely savoury mid palate richness.
