The story of Long Mile dates back to early settlement, after Silesian emigres availed themselves of the kind invitation by George Fife Angas to populate the new colony of South Australia. They founded the hamlet of Langmeil and took to agriculture, establishing vineyards as a priority. Many of these wonderful old sites remain productive, Langmeil are custodians of a 3½ acre block planted in the 1840s. Parcels from mature sites at Lyndoch, Light Pass and Tanunda are assembled into a generously flavoured, engagingly complex, seamless Shiraz of affable old world charm.

$2199each $263DOZEN EACH DOZEN Shiraz is harvested off vineyards up to thirty five years of age, planted to deep sand and red clay soils, mostly trained to single and double wire rod and spur trellis, yielding a mere three to four tonnes per acre. Yields can be much lower during drier growing seasons and hotter vintages, as the parched vines grown to older, unirrigated sites struggle for nourishment. Fruit is crushed and sent for a cold soak maceration in a mix of fermenters, batches are inoculated and treated to a traditional vinfication, plunged and pump over for optimal extraction. Upon completion, components are filled to a selection of seasoned French and American oak barrels for a year's maturation.

Crimson colour with purple hues. Rich aromas of mulberry and satsuma plum, savouryness, roast vegetable, meat and herbal notes. Bright, juicy fruit flows over the palate, a lovely full mouthfeel and texture, fine white pepper and briar spice adding to the complexity, silky tannins in support of a long, fruit filled and subtley spiced finish.

The Orphans are ten rows of seriously old vines Shiraz, planted before 1860 by Langmeil founder Christian Auricht. At the ripe old age of a century and a half, Section 36 in the Hundred of Moorooroo was saved from the developer's bulldozer and reunited with the greater Langmeil flock. The orphans were brought back to their new home, vine by vine with rootballs intact, to join the replantings of Auricht's original Vine Gardens adjacent to the Langmeil wineworks on rich alluvial soils along the banks of Para River.

Old Barossa growers still refer to their vineyards as the garden. Langmeil's ageing vines in the hamlets of Tanunda, Lyndoch and Vine Vale are the source of fruit for this topical mix of Shiraz, Mataro and Grenache. A wine of provenance, the traditional cepage of grapes favoured by early Barossa settlers, crafted through old world styling into a truly a luscious wine, lifted by sweet spice and gentle cherry oak oak, balanced by extra fine tannins which linger, long on a fruit filled finish.

$2199each $263DOZEN EACH DOZEN Parcels of Grenache, Shiraz and Mourverdre are hand selected, carefully hand picked and brought to the Langmeil Barossa wineworks. Fruit is placed into a receival bin and gently worked through to the crusher. A number of whole berries are destined for the ferment, which ensures great complexity while retaining sweet fruit characters. Juice are pumped over skins twice daily to extract maximum colour. After a prolonged time on skins the wine is drained, skins are removed by spade into a basket press where they are gently pressed and returned as a component to the evolving wine. Three Gardens is aged a year under a selection of mostly prior use French and American oak barrels. Alcohol 14.5%

Medium to deep crimson red. Lifted, fresh and bright fruits leap out of the glass, dark cherries, turkish delight and white pepper dominate the bouquet. Bright and juicy fruit flavours coat the palate, well balanced by peppery plum and raspberry characters under a minaret of sweet spice. Medium bodied structure and great complexity over lovely silky tannins which flow through to the lengthy, savoury finish.

A collation of fruit grown to blocks of new and old vines on the Barossa Valley floor, some up to 120 years of age, artfully vinified into the timeless style of honest, traditional Aussie Shiraz. Langmeil obtains much of its material from old, pre phylloxera and own rootstock vineyards throughout the region, in order to guarantee the quality and consistency of its wines. Ripe, rich plummy and dark cherry fruit with earthy tones and hints of spice, it displays fine toasty oak tannins in support of a medium to full bodied wine with splendid soft dry finish.

The choicest parcels are treated to a traditional open fermentation and basket press. Paul Lindner practices old world techniques with obsolete equipment to unlock and exploit full potential of flavours held in the grapes, triumphing in a powerful fruit driven wine that exhibits subtle complexity and discernible vineyard character. A minimal amount of handling and filtration preserves intense flavours, followed by transfer into a selection of seasoned and new French and American oak hogsheads for two years maturation.

The sixty year old Shiraz vines from Greenock which are the source of Eleventh Hour were ready to be uprooted due to the lack of yields and the reluctance of wine companies to pay extra for the exceptional quality fruit. Following repeated requests by Massena for access to the grapes, the growers finally decided to stop the bulldozer and retain a small area of these vines at the eleventh hour. For well informed cohorts of the Cotes du Rhône, think a warm season in Cornas meets Maxime Graillot's Crozes Hermitage from the splendid Domaine de Lises.

$3999each $479DOZEN EACH DOZEN On a brightly moonlit Tuesday evening at around eleven o'clock on the Barossa to Clare Valley road, two young blokes were cruising their way to work the midnight shift for the last vintage of the century, in an old, badly beat up Toyota Corolla. An accord was reached along the way, Massena can now source fruit from dry farmed, low yielding vines up to 120 years of aged, husbanded by dedicated growers in the north western Barossa districts of Greenock, Kalimna and Koonunga Hill. Each vineyard section is separately vinified in traditional open concrete fermenters. Components are aged in seasoned French oak barrels for sixteen months, moved to tank for several more before assemblage, bottled without fining or filtration.

Impenetrable deep, inky hue. Dense and brooding, dark red cherry and blackberry fruits supported by licorice, black pepper and hints of roasted Indian spice. The opulent palate is full of dark cherries, plum and rich chocolate with luscious Barossa plummy fruit sweetness. Its supple tannins and engaging acidity ensure the wine's ease in its youth, silken texture and velvet ripe tannins make Eleventh Hour perfect for a hearty serve of pork and bean cassoulet.
