Massena Eleventh Hour Shiraz
Barossa
Available in cartons of six
The sixty year old Shiraz vines from Greenock which are the source of Eleventh Hour were ready to be uprooted due to the lack of yields and the reluctance of wine companies to pay extra for the exceptional quality fruit. Following repeated requests by Massena for access to the grapes, the growers finally decided to stop the bulldozer and retain a small area of these vines at the eleventh hour. For well informed cohorts of the Cotes du Rhône, think a warm season in Cornas meets Maxime Graillot's Crozes Hermitage from the splendid Domaine de Lises.

On a brightly moonlit Tuesday evening at around eleven o'clock on the Barossa to Clare Valley road, two young blokes were cruising their way to work the midnight shift for the last vintage of the century, in an old, badly beat up Toyota Corolla. An accord was reached along the way, Massena can now source fruit from dry farmed, low yielding vines up to 120 years of aged, husbanded by dedicated growers in the north western Barossa districts of Greenock, Kalimna and Koonunga Hill. Each vineyard section is separately vinified in traditional open concrete fermenters. Components are aged in seasoned French oak barrels for sixteen months, moved to tank for several more before assemblage, bottled without fining or filtration.

Impenetrable deep, inky hue. Dense and brooding, dark red cherry and blackberry fruits supported by licorice, black pepper and hints of roasted Indian spice. The opulent palate is full of dark cherries, plum and rich chocolate with luscious Barossa plummy fruit sweetness. Its supple tannins and engaging acidity ensure the wine's ease in its youth, silken texture and velvet ripe tannins make Eleventh Hour perfect for a hearty serve of pork and bean cassoulet.
Murray Street Black Label Barossa Shiraz
Barossa
Available by the dozen
Murray Street was established in 2001 by families Seppelt and Jahnke. They shared a vision of crafting small batch artisanal wines, in the painstaking old world traditions of Barossa Valley's early settlers. Murray Street's vineyard and wineworks are fortuitously positioned on a tapestry of beautiful rolling landscape near the ancient winemaking village of Greenock at the western end of Barossa. Working together with a small but dedicated team of vignerons and friends, the folks on Murray Street produce small amounts of the most intensely flavoured Shiraz.

The Murray Street property lies on slightly undulating ground, all trellised vines run in an east/ west direction. Minimal intervention techniques in the vineyard preserve the natural balance of indigenous bio organisms, all clippings are mulched and a permanent mid row sward of native grasses is encouraged. The Murray Street winemaking team has grown to include some of the region's most talented and dynamic personalities as they continue to strive for the extraordinary. Individual vineyard parcels of Shiraz are separately vinified in small batch ferments. The finished wine is matured eighteen months in a selection of seasoned and new, French and American oak hogsheads. Alcohol 15.0%

Penfolds RWT Shiraz
Barossa
Available in cases of 6
Outstanding Langtons Classification. The Red Winemaking Trial presents an alternative to the multi-regional, American oak style of Shiraz which are the hallmarks of Grange, expressing instead, a pure Barossa wine aged exclusively in French barriques. RWT is vinified from fruit primarily selected for its aromatic qualities and fine texture rather than sheer intensity or power of flavour. In contrast to the muscular and assertive Grange, it's style is opulent and fleshy, a wine which redefines Barossa Shiraz at the very highest level.

Red Wine Trial is no longer on probation and will complete the conversion of many. A resplendent accord of pure Barossa Shiraz, French oak and the eminent Penfold style. Parcels of fruit, sourced from mature, twenty to hundred year old vineyards in the northern precincts of Barossa Valley, where the higher clay contents retain moisture and slowly release it to the vines, achieve a remarkable quality of Shiraz with darker, richer fruit profile. Grapes are small, thick skinned and intense, with balanced acidity and even tannin ripeness. An elegant, physiologically ripe Barossa Shiraz of outstanding quality and depth, matured sixteen months in an extremely high proportion of new French oak hogsheads.

Black core, magenta rim. Broods upon opening, yet soon to reveal a living aromaticness, sweet, saturated festive pudding, quince paste with glacéed cherries, dark cocoa and Arabica bean, jammon and ground pistachio nut and licorice root, bruléed creaminess of oak. The rich, dark tannins of northern Barossa, impressions of dark roasted meats, oxtail, slow-cooked beef cheek and marrow, texture and viscosity. Dark chocolate nougat and nuts, soy and charcoal fill the gaps.

Peter Lehmann Stonewell Shiraz
Barossa
Available in cases of 6
Stonewell is the very best of vintage, one of the new world's great Shiraz. A powerful, stately wine, Stonewell is the jewel in the crown of Peter Lehmann's most spectacular efforts, the grapes are drawn from the lowest yielding, old vine blocks in all Barossa Valley. Some planted well over a century ago, produce frugal bunches with parched berries, precious little black gems which are at the heart of Stonewell Shiraz. A wine of great intensity and refined muscularity, which demands time under the Lehmann estate cellars before release.

Usually no more than a dozen small, very mature vineyards are selected each year, the oldest planted in 1885. The berries are small and sparse with crops typically less than 1½ tons an acre. Stonewell is about the pedigree of these sites and the knowledge which has been passed from each generation of growers to the next. An assemblage of parcels from grand old Barossa districts, around a core of fruit from the estate vineyad on Stonewell Road in Marananga. Grapes are macerated on skins for up to a fortnight before a course of barrel ferments, a small batch basket press and clarification, followed by a year's maturation in a selection of French oak hogsheads.

Dense black centre with a deep garnet rim. Bouquet of dark chocolate and black forest fruits with hints of mint. A wine of great dignity, its structure is superbly taut, exhibiting intense depth of fruit reined in by firm tannins. Made in strictly limited quantities, a wine for posterity. Savour with rich game dishes, roast beef and hard cheese.
