Grasshopper Rock Pinot Noir
Central Otago
Available by the dozen
Named for a rare grasshopper Sigaus childi, found only at Central Otago within the Earnscleugh gold mine tailings, just across the road from Grasshopper Rock vineyard. The site is fortuitously harsh and sufficiently challenging to make the vines work their hardest. With extremes of heat and cold comes the risk of severe spring and autumn frosts, the property represents a demanding but rewarding environment for the production of world class Pinot Noir.

Earnscleugh Road is at the southernmost latitude of established wine growing in Central Otago. At 45°15' south, the property is one of the most isolated in the world, along with a select group of other sites on the Earnscleugh Rim. Grasshopper Rock is one of the few tracts of quality arable land in the Dunstan Basin. Within the site, there are three distinct areas, Blocks 1 and 2 are hill soils on shattered schist, Blocks 3 and 4 are at the foot of the hill on loamy sand over schist gravel, Blocks 5 and 6 are out from the hill on loamy sand and stony schists. A single vineyard wine from fruit grown to hand managed vines, crafted to traditional techniques, matured ten months in a selection of seasoned and new French oak barrels.

Bright, deep scarlet. Deeply aromatic with earth, cherry and charming violet florals, darker fruits and concentration, gentle spice and toasty oak. Smoothly textured palate with ripe tannins in support of red and black currant and plum flavours. Rich, generous yet wonderfully integrated on release, a long savoury finish and perfect balance of cherry Pinot acids.

Harvests are collated from select vines planted to a mixture of clay and stony soils. Good exposure to sunlight in the lee of the southern Alps is essential to keeping the fruit healthy and well ventilated, achieving optimal ripening. Grapes are destemmed into small fermenting vats, retaining as many whole berries as possible. Several days of cold settling are followed by a wild indigenous yeast vinification. The fermenting caps are submerged twice daily for optimal extractions. Upon completion, components are held on skins for several weeks, infusing complexity and enhancing textures, before transfer into a selection of Burgundian coopered French oak barriques for malolactic and a year's maturation.

Bright ruby hue. Raspberry, bramble and black cherry nose, hints of cinnamon, liquorice, wood smoke and barbecued meat. A generously fruit filled palate supported by a spine of muscular ripe tannins, contributing vibrancy and length. Dark plum, truffles and spice, earthy flavours and underlying power. Match with coq au vin, barbeques and slow cooked game.
Mission Estate Reserve Pinot Noir
Central Otago

From a single elite parcel in the Cromwell basin of Central Otago, a challenging site of gravel clays which encourage the vines to struggle for their nourishment, yielding limited harvests of intensely flavoured Pinot Noir. Grapes are all hand picked and completely destemmed for several days of ferment and a fortnight on skins, followed by a year's age in exclusively French oak. Richly perfumed of cherries and dark festive fruits, its ripe, full bodied palate of forest floor, licorice and stalk, undulates over a lingering length of delicious, gummy tannins.

Momo is a proudly biodynamic certified organic Pinot Noir, the Seresin team emply a range of different preparations to help balance the environment and naturally enrich the soils. Preparations are used in combination to encourage the availability of soil minerals to plants. Momo selects sustainably grown grapes from a small number of growers and uses minimal winemaking intervention to present wines with honest varietal character and quality. Grapes are hand picked and hand sorted, followed by destemming and a term of cold soak maceration. Following a wild indigenous yeast vinification in traditional open top fermenters, components are transferred to French oak barriques for up to a year's maturation.
