The devout vignerons of Bodegas Tridente take a spiritual approach to viticulture, working closely with local growers to restore and preserve the health of precious, small yielding vineyards. Parcels of Tempranillo are sourced off unirrigated sites, much of it parched old bush vines, generally grown to frugal, gravelled sandy soils. Grapes are all hand picked and treated to a minimalist vinification, followed by a measure of age in barrels of French and American oak, softening the tannins while retaining the engaging eloquence and elemental charm of old world Tempranillo.

The exacting standards involved in making Unico Cosecha begins with the husbanding of vines, which are controlled down to each detail. Vega Sicilia have established limits to the production of the estate's vines, which are not to surpass twenty two hectolitres per hectare. All are dry grown and hand pruned, yielding less than two kilos each. Grapes are never picked unless they have achieved high levels of natural sugar concentration. The finished Unicco Cosecha is matured up to ten years in a combination of seasoned and new, estate coopered oak casks and large capacity wooden vats.

The river forms the northern boundary of the thousand hectare property, the southern limit is set by woods, which stand on the slopes leading to the plain. Soils are clay limestone with brown grey streaks and an alluvial area. There are 250 hectares of vineyard, mostly Tempranillo de la Ribera, with further plantings of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Malbec. Vintage 1995 was a mostly Tempranillo wine with a seventh of Cabernet Sauvignon, matured up to ten years in a combination of seasoned and new, oak casks and large capacity wooden vats.

Much of the viticulture here is for local consumption, honest table reds for enthusiasts who know their wine and enjoy matching it with good country faire. Villacampa make a mostly Tempranillo wine with a measure of Cabernet Sauvignon, hand picked off vines up to thirty five years of age, grown to well drained limestone soils. Fruit is treated to a combination of modern and old world vinification techniques, before filling to a selection of seasoned French oak casks for six months maturation.

Deep cherry red colour with hues of Tempranillo blue. Bright fresh currant and strawberry nose, sage, spices and red fruit notes over the darker berry characters of Cabernet. More strawberry and currants on the succulent palate, a juicy, mouth watering wine of opulent fruit flavours and background acidity, supported by fine, drying tannins.

West Cape Howe began their journey with a respect for the land and a dedication to the welfare of the vine. No expense was spared in establishing a standard of viticulture worthy of the world's great terroirs. $1949each $233DOZEN EACH DOZEN West Cape Howe are essentially a Great Southern estate, their exhaustive expanse of properties across the widely dispersed viticultural precincts are planted to many of the Australian west's finest vineyards. The winemaking team source a collation of Tempranillo parcels from sites at Frankland River and Perth Hills, all parts are separately handled to preserve eloquence of terroir. Ferments are pumped over twice daily for a week and a half of vinification, maximising tannin and colour extraction. Upon completion, batches are filled to a selection of seasoned French oak barrels for ten months maturation before assembling into the finished wine.

Rich plum colour, violet hues. Lifted berry fruit nose, dark cherry perfumes seasoned by aromatic savoury notes. The palate is filled with sweet red berry flavours, hints of dark chocolate and olive characters, a well balanced and structural wine, supported by ripe, soft tannins and youthful acidity as it resolves on a long fruit driven finish.
