Deep garnet red. Perfumed with black fruits, currants and plums, seasoned by trade spice and fragrant white pepper notes. Dark chocolate assortments, black cherries and soused fruits, double dipped plum and curls of delicate cinnamon oak over an abundant length of soft, sandy ripe tannins, all framing the wine to its lasting, velvet finish.

After three weeks on skins, batches are drained, the skins are gently pressed and the wine is gravity fed to a selection of new Alliers and Nevers oak barriques. A course of secondery malolactic is followed by two years of rest, regularly rack and returned for clarification, gravity settled and bottled without filtration.

Whole bunches are de stemmed, crushed and chilled into Potter heading down board or 1½ tonne open fermenters. The must is inoculated after three to four days cold soak. Potter fermenters are rack and returned each day, the juices are drained away from skins and pumped back up, refloating the cap. Open fermenters are hand plunged twice daily, ensuring the floating cap does not dry out. The sugar dry batches are drained off, skins gently pressed and the combined wine gravity fed with full lees to a selection of seasoned and new, French oak barriques. Upon completion of malolactic, components are rack and returned for an extended term of maturation, followed by the final cull and assemblage.

Deep intense colour. Complex nose expressing blackcurrants and plum alongside cedar, spice, classic leaf characters and graphite. An elegant Coonawarra style, the Shiraz adds a lovely sweet supple middle presence to the palate, important in a young wine. An impressive red wine to decant and to savour, the tannins are soft, sandy and abundant, a big brooding dry red which will sit happily alongside the best Coonawarra vintages.
Peter Lehmann Stonewell Shiraz
Barossa
Available in cases of 6
Stonewell is the very best of vintage, one of the new world's great Shiraz. A powerful, stately wine, Stonewell is the jewel in the crown of Peter Lehmann's most spectacular efforts, the grapes are drawn from the lowest yielding, old vine blocks in all Barossa Valley. Some planted well over a century ago, produce frugal bunches with parched berries, precious little black gems which are at the heart of Stonewell Shiraz. A wine of great intensity and refined muscularity, which demands time under the Lehmann estate cellars before release.

Usually no more than a dozen small, very mature vineyards are selected each year, the oldest planted in 1885. The berries are small and sparse with crops typically less than 1½ tons an acre. Stonewell is about the pedigree of these sites and the knowledge which has been passed from each generation of growers to the next. An assemblage of parcels from grand old Barossa districts, around a core of fruit from the estate vineyad on Stonewell Road in Marananga. Grapes are macerated on skins for up to a fortnight before a course of barrel ferments, a small batch basket press and clarification, followed by a year's maturation in a selection of French oak hogsheads.

Dense black centre with a deep garnet rim. Bouquet of dark chocolate and black forest fruits with hints of mint. A wine of great dignity, its structure is superbly taut, exhibiting intense depth of fruit reined in by firm tannins. Made in strictly limited quantities, a wine for posterity. Savour with rich game dishes, roast beef and hard cheese.

Picardy Pinot Noir
Pemberton
The inaugural vintage at Picardy produced a single Pinot Noir. With each passing year Picardy evolves into an even more dramatic expression of Pemberton's answer to Burgundy. The mix of clones has infused greater interest in the wine, showing greater texture, structure and complexity. A light to medium bodied effort with the presence and taste of a top end Cote-d'Or, Picardy would have to be one of the finest Pinot Noir in the new world. An alluring wine that's almost too easy to drink, its finely grained tannins making it completely approachable while young.

Bill and Sandra Pannell were pioneers of the Margaret River region, having establishing the stately Moss Wood circa 1969. They also held an interest in Volnay's Domaine de la Pousse d'Or until acquisition of the Picardy property in Pemberton, which was selected for its high altitude and well drained loam soils. Several clones Pinot Noir, including Dijon 114, 115 and 777, are mostly destemmed and lightly crushed into small fermenters for cold maceration. Ferments are hand plunged three times daily before being treated to an airbag press. Batches are settled and pumped into a selection of new to four year old French oak barriques for completion of malolactic and a year's maturation.

Ruby red colour. Rich aromas of strawberry, cherry and vanilla oak are interlaced with the tell-tale leather and earth of this seductive Burgundian icon. On the palate are pronounced red berry fruits, mineral and earth, leather, sap and a touch of spicy oak. Light, fine, dry tannins and fresh clean acidity dominate the flavour. Showing perfect balance and weight, finishing dry and spicy with excellent length, superbly matched to duck or spring lamb.
