Soils are quite different at Marananga, consisting of sandy loam, followed by clay with limestone thinly dispersed. This tends to give the wine more blue fruit characters and lift combined with the intensity of the old vines. Bogan is vinified over a range of 28C to 30C before being transferred to oak for the completion of malolactic and a term of maceration on skins, followed by pressing to barrel. The wine is topped regularly and treated to another racking, matured thirteen months in a combination of new and seasoned Allier and Vosges French oak barriques. Kaesler try not to bother the wine unless it needs assistance, the Bogan is bottled without fining or filtration. Alcohol 15.0%

Dense, deep garnet, dark purple colour with vibrant edge. Blueberry and blackberry, coffee and dark chocolate over spicy oak. A feint edge of wild herbs, tarragon and oregano. Fantastic black fruit drive and power, whilst showing restraint and structure. Great acidity, flavours of mocha and supple, silky smooth tannins, great focus and length. The classic and enduring old vines Barossa Shiraz, expansive depth and breadth.

Kaesler Old Bastard Shiraz
Barossa
A single vineyard Shiraz from fruit grown to the estate's 1893 block, hand pruned and hand picked, yielding less than two tonne per acre. When Kaesler first purchased the property, it was in a derelict state and certain to die if measures to revive the site were not expedited. Many years of over cropping and neglect had taken its toll. A previous regime of irrigation with increasingly salty bore water was slowly poisoning the soil. A thousand kilos of Old Bastard's fruit gives about 680 litres of wine or about 900 bottles, single vineyard expression at its most extreme.

The Kaesler family sprung from Silesian pioneers who migrated to the Barossa in the 1840s. The ancient vines on the 1893 block have deep roots, permitting a greater uptake of minerals, heightening the complexity of the Old Bastard. A greener farming approach has yielded a wine which is enormously hard to interpret when young. A French technique known as eleve-en-chene is employed throughout the vinification, assisting the skilled vignerons who are at a loss to explain what they can't see and don't understand. Old Bastard is matured in the Kaesler's underground cellar for eighteen months in a selection of choice Burgundian oak barrels, bottled a la natural, without any fining or filtration.

Deep red colour. Bright and welcoming nose, an eye of fruit that's hard to unwind, a bowl of red fruits, ink with a streak of fresh rhubarb, oak leaves a scent of Arabic spice market. Bright structured acid, soft milk chocolate, a nice glow of fruits emerge, pomegranate and rhubarb prevail. The finish is of superfine talcum textured fruit and oak tannins.
Kaesler Old Vine Shiraz
Barossa
Available in cases of 6
The Kaesler family arrived in South Australia as Silesian pioneers, migrating to Barossa Valley in the 1840s. Some of the original gnarled, dry grown Shiraz vines still remain and provide the backbone for the intense wines produced from the sandy loam soils of the estate's prime viticultural block. Old Vine Shiraz is an assembly of four parcels of old Shiraz vines grown to Kaesler vineyards. A Shiraz that will never be overtly fruity, it is best suited to those who prefer a solid, chewy wine with a savoury style and good solid structure.

The Kaeslers did not make their own wine until quite recently, traditionally selling grapes to Seppelt. Today's Kaesler springs from a worldwide search for a property to produce the best possible grapes for red wine. Shiraz is hand harvested during the chill of morning, off three distinguished vineyard blocks at Marananga and Nuriootpa, averaging fifty years of age. Fruit is treated to ten days of open ferment on skins and daily pumpovers twice daily. Batches are pressed into a selection of seasoned and new French oak hogsheads for twenty three months maturation, regular rackings and top ups, before assemblage and bottling without any fining or filtration, the emphasis on an extreme style of Shiraz.

Purple/ crimson colour, dense centre and youthful edge. A bouquet of dark plums and blackberry and toasty oak, creme de cassis and liquorice, the aromas are slightly introverted in its youth. The fruit is actually quite solid but repressed by oak and tannin at the moment. Full bodied and powerful, plenty of tannin and structure, elegant in style as dark berry fruits mingle on a length of mocha and cassis notes.
