Grant Burge Meshach Shiraz
Barossa
Available in cases of 6
Meshach William Burge 1843-1942, was Grant's great grandfather, a central figure in establishing the Burge vineyards and estate. He was eleven years of age when his family moved from Wiltshire to the Barossa, where he toiled to develop what has grown into a thriving viticultural, wheat and sheep property near Lyndoch. Grant has selected his finest Shiraz to bear the Meshach name. Since inaugural vintage in 1988, Meshach has won several of the nation's most significant trophies and medals, generally regarded as one of Australia's first growths.

Hand picked Shiraz from the elite Filsell Vineyard, where the vines are almost a hundred years of age, along with a small portion of fruit from even older Barossa sites. Meshach is made from grapes exhibiting tremendous concentration and intensity, especially when allowed to ripen to the desired Baume of 14.5°. After crushing, juices are fermented down to a Baume of 1°, then pressed and transferred into a selection of seasoned and new French and American oak hogsheads for completion and a course of malolactic. Components are racked and the barrels cleaned, returned to the same oak for eighteen months maturation. Meschach is bottled and aged a further three years before release.

Exceptional depth and intensity of colour. Powerful aromas of ripe blackberry, spiced plums and dark chocolate along with delicate touches of floral, raspberries and mint. The palate is sumptuous with flavours of Swiss chocolate, savoury spice, raspberrie and red currant. The palate hits perfect balance between flavour, concentration and structure, exhibiting beautiful tannins and excellent length. Meschach will appeal to the connoisseur in every red wine enthusiast.

Grant Burge's Corryton Park vineyard, one of the highest and coolest in the greater Barossa region, contributes most of the fruit. The balance is sourced from the finest Cabernet sites on the Barossa Valley floor. Harvest commences when the grapes achieve the ripest and most optimal Baume. Shadrach is treated to a traditional vinification in open static fermenters for a week, a portion of fruit is left on skins for an extended maceration developing structure and longevity. The balance completes primary and malolactic ferments in a selection of seasoned and new French oak barrels for twenty one months, followed by a term of two or three years in bottle before release.

Dark plum colour. Concentrated aromas of blackberry, liquorice and eucalypt with hints of choc-mint and vanilla bean. The palate is full bodied with complex bramble characters, plum and blueberry, cassis and the delicacy of mint, all spice and tobacco notes. A rich middle palate is followed by fine tannins and exceptional length. The epitome of grand Barossa Cabernet Sauvignon, to accompany the finest gourmandise.

Alberto Antonini and David Gleave make their living from Italian vino. Alberto is the winemaker and David is a UK agent importing some of Italy's top producers. When Mark Walpole showed Alberto Antonini the Greenstone site, Alberto wasted no time, immediately ringing David in London. A collaboration between Antonini and Morningtom maestro Sandro Mosele, Greenstone combines elegance with the depth and weight that characterises Heathcote Shiraz. A wine of impeccable balance, fine grained tannins and lifted, fruit filled acidity on the finish.

The Greenstone property was acquired by viticulturalist Mark Walpole, Tuscan winemaker Alberto Antonini and Master of Wine David Gleave in 2003. Several different clones of Shiraz are grown to the old Cambrian soils of this splendid vineyard at Colbinabbin. Grapes are hand picked and transported to the Kooyong Winery at Mornington. Grapes are treated to a natural cold soak and vinified through the action of wild indegenous yeasts. After a fortnight's maceration in open top fermenters, the cap is punched down by hand to extract good colour and ripe tannins. Following completion of ferments, Greenstone is matured up to twenty months in a combination of new and prior use French oak barriques.

Deep ruby/ purple coloured. Lifted perfumes displaying a lovely ripe, brambly spicy fruit on the nose. Combines the elegance of mid Victorian Shiraz with the depth and weight that characterise wines from Heathcote. On the palate, the rich, dark plum fruit is weighty yet nicely balanced by the supple, the low levels of oak permit the Shiraz fruit to shine through, dense, nicely layered and long, elegant and finely balanced.

Groom Kalimna Shiraz
Barossa
Marschall Groom is the culmination of many years accumulated experience in the construct of Australia's most memorable vintages. The dream became reality following acquistion of a barren property in the Kalimna appellation of Barossa, directly adjacent Penfolds Kalimna Vineyard, home of the mighty Grange. Showing less oak than is typical of Australian Shiraz, Groom succeeds in being rich without any overt jammy or tannic qualities. Nose and palate exhibit good spice, anise and berry flavours, a firm, fleshy structure and fine textures.

In 1997 the first acres on Marschall Groom's Kalimna Bush Block were planted to Shiraz, producing a crop for the 1999 vintage. Classic, ultra premium Shiraz territory! The unforgiving soils are well known for very low yields, loose clusters and extremely small berries. To compliment the youth of estate vines, a component is sourced from the distinguished Fechner Vineyard, home to fifty years old vines. The parcels of Shiraz are treated to a traditional and gentle vinification, minimally handled to small batch vinification techniques. Juices are punched down over skins in open top vessels for several days, followed by an extended maturation in a selection of new and seasoned American and French oak barrels.

Deep, black and brooding in colour. The nose shows bright fresh aromas of blackberry, licorice and spice, true to its variety. The new oak component is kept at a minimum allowing the vibrant fruit characters to elevate. A palate that will appeal to all, particularly the warmth, length and velvety silkiness it delivers. This is an awesome, delicious Shiraz, a very focused, classy and beautifully structured wine.
