Exclusively old vine Shiraz from pre phylloxera material imported by early German settlers. One of the most evocative labels in the world of wine, Hill of Grace vineyard is set on a unique part of the Moculta landscape called Parrot Hill, an isolated spot where gentle protected slopes nestle against the rocky Boundary Road ridge to the east. Brought into the Henschke estate in 1951, Hill of Grace experienced an exceptional growing season for vintage 1996, average winter rainfall, a mild spring with excellent flowering, dry and cool for summer. The cool conditions allowed for slow ripening with excellent flavour development. Matured in new French and American hogsheads for eighteen months.

Very deep crimson colour. A sweet ripe complex, exotic nose of prunes, plums, blackberries, cedar and chocolate aromas. A rich sweet succulent palate, complex and well structured with excellent concentration and textures, finishing silky smooth on an exquisite length of fine velvety tannins.

Matured eighteen months in a high selection of new French oak hogsheads, Hill of Roses is marked by its exceptional finesse, licorice notes, blackberry and cassis, a measure of tittilating five spice on the seemingly endless, creamy tannin finish.

Ronald Angas planted the distinguished Edelstone Vineyard in 1912. The forty acre site was planted to Shiraz vines, probably sourced through Joseph Gilbert at Pewsey Vale. The original pre-phylloxera material most likely originated from the James Busby selection, which was propagated by Samuel Smith of Yalumba in the 1850s. Whilst planted purely as a Shiraz vineyard, there have been found ten rogue vines of bastardo. The anthocyanins in the berries at Mount Edelstone are very high which indicates the superior quality of Shiraz. The finished wine is matured in a selection of seasoned and new French and American oak hogsheads for eighteen months prior to assemblage.

Deep crimson with purple hue. Powerful, ripe aromas of blackberry and plum, complexing hints of star anise, ferns, eucalypt and dark chocolate. Dense, ripe and rich, with a lush texture and ripe, licorice tinged fruit. The palate is an intense and concentrated blend of sweet, juicy plum pudding fruit and structured ripe tannin. With mouthfilling power, seamless texture and lingering finish, displaying the exquisite singularity of Mount Edelstone vineyard.

No other wine in the world could manage such a monumental debut as that made by the stately Tappa Pass Shiraz. Henschke work at the top of their form, to infuse every bottle with the unique energy of historic Barossa vineyards. The very old, low yielding vines are grown mostly to low fertility Neoproterozoic soils more than a half billion years of age, ranging from red brown earths to Terra rossa. The fully ripe black Shiraz grapes are sourced from grower owned vineyards in the Tappa and Light Passes, earmarked by Henschke and vinified in traditional open top fermenters. Matured in a high proportion of new French oak hogsheads for eighteen months prior to assemblage.

Deep crimson, violet hues. Intense, fragrant aromas of blue and black berry fruits, satsuma plums and ripe mulberries interwoven with creamy cedar, mocha and roast meat nuances, subtle hints of Thai spices and flint. The palate is rich, round and lush, layers of concentrated dark plums and black fruits, an incredible intensity of flavours and beautifully balanced silky tannins for a long, fine, assertive finish.
