Hand picked off a precious hectare of vines, planted to a felicitious bequeath of deep loam topsoils over clay, along the crest of a southerly slope at the very heart of the Woodland vineyards. Grapes are shunted up the hill to the Woodland wineworks for immediate pressing, wild indigenous yeast ferments and ten months lees stirring battonage in fine oak. Opulent yet refined, fragrant of chamomile and honeysuckle grapefruits, abundant with orchard characters, roasted hazelnuts and maritime salinity, a pebble and oyster shell minerality which conjures up tradewinds and briny tropical seas.

A stately accord of the most superior Margaret River fruit, offering great concentration while displaying an exemplary integration of tannins and oak. Woodlands Vineayard is bequeathed with plantings of elite Cabernet vines established 1973. Whilst much of their resplendent fruit finds its way into some of the better known estate flaghips of Margaret River, the pick of the crop is kept back and vinified under the Woodlands label. An assemblage of the best barrels Merlot and Malbec around a backbone of the finest Margaret River Cabernet Sauvignon.

$6899each $827DOZEN EACH DOZEN Woodlands Margaret is sourced entirely from Woodlands Vineyard, the Cabernet Sauvignon comes from a south slope which wraps around a ninety degree radius from east to north. Vines receive a great deal of direct sunlight from morning to mid afternoon. Merlot and Malbec are grown to a west facing slope of deep loam soils which receives the most direct afternoon sunlight and yields intensely flavoured berries. Grapes are hand picked, sorted and destemmed, crushed into small closed fermenters, pumped over four times daily. Upon completion, the Cabernet is soaked for a month on skins. Following malolactic, Woodlands is filled to a high proportion of new French oak barrels for eighteen months maturation.

Bright crimson colour. Blackcurrant, black olive, mulberries and cassis nose, seasoned by notes of fine new oak. August, concentrated and dense, ripe red and dark berry fruits on a succulent middle palate, lined with the plushest tannins. Characteristic of the power and charm which define Woodlands Margaret Cabernet. The finish is long and intense yet silky smooth.

Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec and Franc. Woodlands have observed that some parcels of their vineyard produce aromatic ferments, while others are more structured. The finest pickings are treated to small open fermenters enhancing aromatics. Parcels showing greater structure are vinified in small closed fermenters. The best of both worlds, a Cabernet that retains vibrant aromatic fruit whilst gaining structure and adding weight. After a year in exclusively new French oak, the best barrels of vintage are determined and set aside for the final assemblage.

$17599each $2111DOZEN EACH DOZEN Fruit is sourced from the original estate plantings of Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon and Franc, on a south facing, sandy loam over gravel clay slope. These small plots receive the greatest number of sunlight hours at Woodlands, the east west orientation of vines ensures a slow ripening, the last parcels to be harvested each year. Fruit is picked late March to early April, destemmed and passed over a vibrating sorting table, crushed and vinified in small closed fermenters, followed by a term of maceration on skins before being pressed for malolactic. Upon completion, batches are transferred to new French medium toast barrels for nineteen months maturation.

Deep crimson colour. The nose reveals cassis and mulberry, blackcurrant, violet and toasty French oak. The palate shows deep brooding characters of blackberry, mulberry and briar. A very focused wine, with an array of rich fruit flavours and long grained tannins.

Very few vineyards yield the quality of fruit that merits vintaging into a statuesque wine dominated by the prettily fragrant Cabernet Franc. Woodlands were established from the ground up with a view to achieving limited harvests of the arcane Bordeaux varietals, only a few hundred cases of good red wine per vintage. There are now two estate vineyards, located within two kilometres of each other in Wilyabrup Valley, dry grown and farmed through traditionally organic techniques. The sanctity of soil yields a vividly varietal Cabernet Franc of finite peerage.

$3399each $407DOZEN EACH DOZEN An assemblage of fruit harvested off Woodlands Brook Vineyard in the Wilyabrup Valley of Margaret River. Grapes are picked in small batches, row by row as each parcel achieves complete and optimal ripeness. A special hopper lifts fruit into the air before gently shaking the bunches into the destemmer, which in turn removes stems by swinging a cage from side to side. This process is much more gentle on the fruit, ensuring that shot berries, dry and unripe grapes remain on the stems and out of the wine. Upon completion of ferments, batches are filled to a high proportion of new French oak barrels for fourteen months maturation.

The archetypal west coast Bordeaux style, a vibrant cepage of Cabernet and Merlot, Malbec and Franc, picked off the first vineyards ever planted to Margaret River. A component from the younger Woodlands Brook site contributes structure and aromatics. Woodlands remains an enigma, as the vineyard team place great trust in the quality of fruit, the finished wine can be both pretty and powerful. Vinified exclusively of Wilyabrup parcels, painstakingly hand sorted, berry by berry, the graceful tannins continue to soften, as the fruit begins to sing.

$3399each $407DOZEN EACH DOZEN Woodlands Brook is currently planted to six hectares of Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot on a north facing slope of loam soils. Grapes are hand picked, batches are gently crushed and separately fermented to retain integrity of varietals, most parcels are treated to a closed fermentation, a process called upon to retain the intensity and power of fruit. Other smaller batches are treated to open ferments, a technique which enhances aromaticness. Some batches can be treated to full or partial malolactic to add complexity and enhance the integration with oak. Woodlands is transferred to a selection of French oak barriques to be aged fourteen months before assemblage.

Intense crimson in colour. The nose shows brooding characters of mulberries, blackberries and dark cherry combined with toasty French oak notes. Best described as classic and refined, the palate is very rich and dense, with considerable weight and power. Woodland finishes with ripe fine grained tannins.

The Wilyabrup subregion of Margaret River is widely acclaimed by industry pundits as the source of Australia's finest Chardonnay. Woodland's consuming ambition is to create wines which emulate the great vineyards of the world. There is less than a hectare of low yielding Chardonnay at Woodlands and output is highly limited. Woodlands is produced exclusively from Mendoza, the clone that made Margaret River famous for Chardonnay. A luxurious regimen of lees stirring and new oak fermentation adds mouth filling textures and rich complexity.

$3699each $443DOZEN EACH DOZEN Chardonnay vines were planted in 1985 to light gravelly loam soils atop Woodland's south facing slope. The Gingin/ Mendoza clone was first choice, famous for it's hen and chicken bunchset, delivering low yields with higher levels of acidity and great intensity of flavour. Grapes are hand picked at ripe and healthy baumes, each batch is separately destemmed through an advanced vibrating hopper and pressed into French oak for a luxurious course of barrel ferments, enhancing intensity of fruit while achieving a more complex flavour profile. Upon completion, most batches are racked, a third of the wine remains in barrel. Come September, components are racked and assembled for filtration and bottling.

Intense straw hue. Layers of stonefruit and lime, nectarines and pear, mineral notes and struck flint over subtle French oak. The palate is balanced and refined, showing great poise and finesse, stonefruits and citrus, mineral and flint over delightful French oak, finishing with a vibrant crisp texture from the bright natural acidity. A rich, full bodied wine with excelent retention of natural freshness.

The Xabregas Mount Barker vineyards enjoy a microclime that's somewhat similar to some of Europe's great winegrowing districts. Riesling is afforded a great deal of respect as a grape and generally the winemaking influence is minimal, to preserve the aromatics. Artisan Riesling is the antithesis. The aim is to interact with the precision of Riesling's acidity and flavour to add complexity and most importantly texture, without overpowering the delicate fruit.

$3099each $371DOZEN EACH DOZEN The jewel in the Xabregas crown are three beautiful sites, just ten kilometres south of Mount Barker along the renowned Figtree Lane, Spencer and Narrikup Roads. The three properties behave as idiosyncratically as the four seasons, adding to the dynamic of Mount Barker. Riesling grapes are treated to a substantial pressing to extract optimal flavour. The aim is to construct a wine with brilliant crystalline structure, brisk lime/citrus character and maximum intensity of fruit. Juices are cold settled and barrel fermented through the action of native yeasts and stirred on full sulphured lees for five months. Upon completion the batches are matured eight months during a course of battonage in tank on fine yeast lees. Alcohol 11.9%

Bright pale straw hue. Artisan is cut from a different cloth, a mixture of classic citrus, talcum powder and red apple characters with nuances of smoky oak and camembert cheese. A bone dry, savoury palate of citrus marmalade, lime rind and lemon acid, with a creamy mid palate of piquant aged cheddar, followed by a mouth watering brace of acid to finish.

An assemblage of Shiraz and Rousanne from the finest vineyards south of Mt. Barker, harvested throughout the cooler temperatures of early morning at closely timed passes amongst the vines to create a Syrah of structure and complexity. Each site contributes a uniqueness and influence adding a different personality to the final wine. An elegant, medium weighted Syrah with abundant spice and graceful tannins, co fermentation with portions of the Roussanne grape adds another layer of texture and depth to this emerging Mt Barker style.

$3399each $407DOZEN EACH DOZEN The vineyard enjoys near perfect conditions, warmth in the morning, afternoon cloud cover to reduce solar radiation and cooler nights. Mature Shiraz vines are trained to vertical shoot position trellising. Grapes are de-stemmed and crushed, the fruit is chilled on its way to fermenters. Whole bunch inclusions and wild yeast inoculation contribute exciting complexity. Musts are transferred to closed static fermenters for three weeks vinification on skins, while being treated to several pumpovers for aeration each day. Upon completion, parcels are passed through a membrane press to a selection of new and seasoned French oak barrels for a minimum eighteen months maturation. Alcohol 16.0%

Deep, crimson red. Rich with spice and black fruits, an abundance of aromatics, white pepper, nutmeg and cherries with undertones of vanilla bean, dried lavender and coffee. The intriguing spice and floral nuances continue on the palate which is lively and medium in weight, followed by a persistent length and tightly knit set of youthful tannins. Impressively complex with outstanding texture, depth and structure, Artisan is eminently drinkable upon release and will evolve magnificently.

Boodjidup Vineyard Viognier, the old growers trick of slicing a cane of bunches off the vine and setting the whole branch aside to dry and shrivel as the berries become engorged with flavour. The deliciously desiccated grapes are crushed and cold soaked to rehydrate the raisined fruit, pressed and sent for a month of vinification at a cool 15°C. Ferments are arrested to retain all the moreish sweetness and extraordinary complexity of cane cut Viognier. Apricot nectars, mango and lychee, her mouth watering lemon honey drop juicyness persists through to a wickedly flavourful finish.
