Fruit is harvested in two separate parcels off the Hanlin Hill Vineyard in Valley Clare. Shiraz is drawn from Block C, originally planted in 1963 but with a chequered past of being grafted to Chardonnay in 1983 and chain sawed back to the original Shiraz plantings in 1997. Malbec is picked off Block I, established 1969. Perfect phenolic ripeness determines a whole bunch fermentation. Components of Malbec and Shiraz are treated to a regimen of fully oxidative handling and inoculation to wild, unruly yeasts. The finished wine is assembled into a forward drinking, yet cellarable style of great interest, substance and structure. Alcohol 13.2%

Deep dark red colour. The nose delivers an array of red fruits, raspberry and morello cherry are layered with sweet five-spice and earthy beetroot notes. A brooding explosion of anise, cherry and mulberry flavours is pulled together by velvety whole bunch tannins. A challenging and thoughtful wine that keeps you going back to your glass for the next sip.

Knappstein Watervale Ackland Riesling
Clare Valley
Available in cartons of six
A pure caricature of Watervale, a highly eloquent expression of Riesling, as influenced by the very special terroir and clime from which it is derived. Planted in 1969, the Knappstein Ackland River site is a dry grown property of classic red loam over limestone soils, perfect for yielding vintages of outstanding Riesling fruit. The delicate floral nuances and calico textures are unique to the handful of precious sites within this exclusive Watervale precinct.

Slate and shaley rocks which lie abundant around the Ackland vineyard play a crucial role in the aromatic development of the Riesling. Planted to cool altitudes of 420-450 metres overlooking nearby Watervale township, Ackland's east northeast facing aspect protects the vines from the prevailing winds off the Great Southern Ocean. Whilst capturing the full morning sun to develop strong lime and citrus flavours, the high natural acids are greatly enhanced by the cold night temperatures. All the fruit is selectively hand picked, gently crushed with only the best free run juice used. Musts are cold settled and fermented with neutral yeasts at cool temperatures to dryness, cold settled once again for clarification prior to filtration.

Light yellow colour. Ackland shows lifted lemons and limes with delicate floral aromas. The palate is rich with lemon lime and has wonderful persistent acid to complement the fruit sweetness. Knappstein displays the Watervale generosity of intense citrus fruits, exciting and immensely pleasureable, the persistence is balanced by a refreshing mineral acidity. It finishes long and lingering.

Koltz is a very small producer of hand crafted wines, made to traditional methods, fermented in open vats, basket pressed and matured under finely grained oaks. Koltz try to make wines that are individual and reflect the estate's philosophy that wines should be a pleasure to drink at every stage of their evolution. Vintage at Blewitt Springs is generally two to four weeks later than most of McLaren Vale. The sandy soils over ironstone make distinctive wines. Shiraz is open fermented and basket pressed, portions are treated to an extended maceration for up to fifty days, depending on season and ripeness. The finished wine is matured in a selection of seasoned and new French oak barrels for up to twenty months.

Deep vibrant dark purple colour. Lovely berry fruit pastille characters with a touch of spice supported by subtle cedary oak. A middle weight wine with a soft generous mid palate finishing over nice firm tannins. Mouthfilling, a lift of spicey fruit carries through from the nose. Excellent value for the Koltz entry point wine, there's plenty to appreciate in this pure and ripe, well crafted, concentrated Shiraz.

The Follett family vineyard was established in the 1880s by Arthur John Follett, great, great grandfather of today's winemaker. The site is surrounded by majestic river red gums which infuse the grapes with eucalypt characters. Lake Breeze selects only the best 25% of fruit from the older vines for its estate releases, a limited crush of only two hundred tonne. The old vines, which are dry grown, rely on winter flooding of the Bremer River, to carry the vines through the dry summer months, as Langhorne Creek receives very little rain. Bernoota is vinified on skins in open static fermenters for a week, followed by twenty months maturation in a combination of American and French oak barriques.

Deep scarlet colour. Bernoota shows dark fruit characters of blackberry and plum with a hint of spice, cigarbox and smoke. It's lifted aromas carry a heady whiff of exotic spice, leading on to a juicy palate underpinned by smooth, smoky vanilla/ coconut oak and firm, pliant tannins. This is an impressive wine with persistent dark berry characters and genial acids, seamlessly adjoined into a full bodied, complex wine of great poise and solid structure.
