The Tolpuddle Martyrs were English farmhands whose only crime was to establish a workers union in the world's newest nation, perfect stock with strong backs to labour as penal colonists, they served out their sentence on the site of Tolpuddle Vineyard. The property is now planted to blocks of fully mature vines, they face northeast and slope gently up from Back Tea Tree Road. Soils are light silica over sandstone, only moderate in vigor, the ideal terroir for minimalist yields of the most remarkably balanced and wonderfully intense Pinot Noir.

Soils were formed from the weathered gravels of an ancient river system, which originally reached from St Arnaud to the coast. These gravel threaded clays are renowned for producing wines of richness and texture. The first vines were planted on rich river loam beside the mouth of the Motueka River. Vibrant, fertile river flats with loamy, sandy soils, in conjunction with careful vineyard management ensure vigourous growth in the Motueka and Riwaka vineyards, while the heavier but no less fertile soils of the Moutere are coupled with incredibly hot temperatures. These climes produce mouthfilling wines with an array of aromas and flavours.

Light straw in colour. Torrent Bay is a clean, fresh and approachable wine initially delivering hay and straw aromas with secondary stone fruit characters. Totara is just such an operation, crafting wine to the most exacting standards, a complex assemblage of fruit from a number of good vineyards that lie within the subregions of Marlborough. Inoculated by a combination of yeasts and treated to a cool temperature controlled fermentation, with some extended lees contact to flesh out the palate. The final wine is vinified with as little intervention as possible, the aim being to preserve nature's own balance and vitality of fruit. Bottled unwooded and unoaked, Totara is fashioned to be a clean, refreshing wine with revitalizing fruit characters and well balanced acidity.

Pale straw colour. Lemon and citrus aromas, grapefruit, passionfruit and herbal notes. Clean and fresh, showing more of the lemon and citrus characters on the palate, as well as hints of asparagus with dill, passionfruit and pineapple. The Totara tree is endowed with strength and durability, native to New Zealand, it has long been revered by the Maori, as well as early European settlers for its diverse qualities and usefulness. The chilling winds of Island South serve to reduce fruit set and limit yields, temperate summers provide ideal conditions for a slow and complete ripening. Small intensely flavoured berries translate into a wine of great colour and concentrated flavour. Grapes are hand harvested and cold soaked up to five days prior to fermentations. The batches are vinified in open vats for an average of seven days, initially treated to a course of daily cap plunges, gradually increasing to three per day at peak of ferment. The completed wines are matured under a mix of tank, oak staves and French oak barrels.

Deep ruby/ garnet colour. Dark cherry, wild thyme and spice with a hint of candle smoke to the bouquet. A rich and lively Otago wine with juicy acid and fine tannins. Dark cherry and spice characters are complimented by smoky French oak. Soft and approachable, before leading to a velvety, lingering finish. A gourmande's delight, will gladly accompany roast guinea fowl or seared and caramelized chicken liver bruschetta.

The Murphys were among the first settlers to establish vineyards around Mildura. The family moved to Trentham Cliffs in 1960 and re-developed a site which was part of a larger sheep station, irrigated by the nearby Murray River. The first vintages were destined for fortified wines, as was the market demand of the time. Blocks were later planted to Pinot Gris, which performed brilliantly in the rich red loam over limestone soils. A crisp and fresh table wine, just lovely alongside garlic recipes or everyone's favourite chicken caesar.

$1999each $239DOZEN EACH DOZEN Pinot Gris is a mutation of Pinot Noir, the grapes ripen mid season with pink to light purple coloured berries. In Italy it generally makes lighter and finer wines. Trentham Estate is one of the region's leading growers, producing some of the Mallee's most noteworthy, flagship wines. The operation husbands vines of various age, with the oldest being planted in 1952. Grapes are harvested throughout the cool of early morning, crushed, chilled and gently pressed. After settling, the clarified juices are cold fermented until dry. The young wine is allowed to to settle before stabilisation, clarification and bottling. La Famiglia has been minimally handled to highlight the natural expression of Pinot Gris.

Pale yellow hue. Pretty, savoury and aromatic, attacks with plenty of crisp, crunchy fruit, perfumed with talcy overtones, nuttyness, minerality and pear. A full palate of clean characters in a dry captivating style, supported by stone fruit flavours and layered with mineral acidity. Great with or without food, but do try it with antipasto!

The cool ripening Pinot Noir is frustratingly difficult to grow even in the most favourable of climes. Trentham Estate is vinified from four different clones, grapes of varying colour and tannin, a diverse range of natural fruit flavours, contributing complexity and weight to the final wine. Picked off the finest blocks of Pinot Noir, bunches are destemmed, pumped through a chiller into fermenters and cold soaked for a day or two at 5âC. Batches are inoculated, vinified for five days on skins and pressed for a course of maturation, a component is sent for a term in French oak barrels before assemblage into the finished wine.

Bright scarlet colour. A delicate, lifted aroma displaying strawberry and red cherry fruits, mocha and vanilla. The berry characters continue on to the palate, supported by light licorice tannins and subtle oak. The flavours linger on a long, delicate, fruit and spice driven finish. Enjoy with tomato pasta or Asian style chicken, duckling or Atlantic salmon.

Trentham have retained their identity as a unique, artisanal winemaking estate, amongst the boundless expanse of commercial Riverina vineyards. The older site is low yielding, producing wines with more body. The younger vineyards produce wines with more varietal lift and definition. Vintage is determined by ripeness, healthy acids and the desired levels of baume. Immediately following harvest, grapes are destemmed and crushed. The musts are chilled and moved through the press for a term of cold settling, clarified juices are cold fermented with a select yeast over a course of three weeks. Upon completion, batches are treated to a relaxed settle before racking and assemblage into the final wine.

Light straw hues. Lifted aromas, dry flintiness and light herbaceous hints, tropicals, passionfruit and lychee. In the vineyard, Nebbiolo looks unimpressive, characterised by almost wild canopy growth, the berries range in colour from light to deep red. Grapes mature late in the season with low sugar and high acid levels. Following the harvest, fruit is crushed and transferred to tank for inoculation and eight days of vinification. Ferments are pumped over regularly to maintain consistent temperatures and to aid extraction from skins. Upon completion the batches are pressed into old French oak barrels for eighteen months maturation, before assembling into the final wine, stabilizing and clarification.

A light hue of red. Lifted fresh rose petal and cherry aromas follow to the palate. Flavours are supported by hints of leather, black olive and a touch of savoury before a long but delicate finish. A great match with Italian cuisine, it will not dominate but marry beautifully with the robust flavours. Try with capelli d'angela, sugo di pomodoro and meatballs, bellissimo.
