The vineyard is protected from rainfall variation by a fully integrated drip irrigation system, which includes four bores and five licences to pump from the Murrumbidgee River flowing along the southern border of the property. Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot are harvested from Cookoothama Vineyard throughout the cool of night and delivered in small batches to the winery. Grapes are crushed, inoculated and pumped over in traditional style to avoid the extraction of bitter tannins. Components are then transferred to a combination of seasoned and new French and American oak barrels for maturation prior to the final assemblage.

The traditional Bordeaux cepage of varietal grapes, mostly Merlot with additions of Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec and Franc, grown to the Craggy Range estate owned property in the prestigious Hawkes Bay precinct of Gimblett Gravels. The complex mix is finely attenuated each year to accomodate the vagaries of vintage. Craggy Range make an opulent, solidly structured Merlot that's feted by impresarios the world over. Deeply coloured and highly aromatic, Gimblett Gravels is effusive ans profoundly structured, underpinned by signature dusty tannins.

Every stage of the vine's growth is measured and compared to ensure balance and harmony with the environment. Pruning, removal of excess, thinning and arranging are all done by hand. Fruit is harvested off twenty two blocks on the Craggy Range Gimblett Gravels property. Grapes are completely destemmed and inoculated in fermenters for vinification. Upon completion, Craggy Range is transferred to a selection of new and seasoned French oak barriques for sixteen months maturation, followed by assemblage into the finished wine, a light fining and filtration before bottling. Stylistically the Pinot Noir here exhibits profound complexity, a reserved intellectual mouthfeel and impressive length on the palate. The vineyard consists of two distinct terraces, one comprised of very old stony soils at a higher altitude, producing exceptional Pinot Noir. Hand picked grapes are gently destemmed, a small amount of whole bunches are included. Fruit is inoculated to a mixture of wild and cultured yeasts, vinified in a mix of open top fermenters and small oak cuves, followed by ten months in a selection of French oak barriques.

Intervention in the cellar is minimal out of respect for the true character of a special vineyard, whilst exposing the textural elements for a more evocative style of Sauvignon Blanc, achieving a wine with distinctive fine, soft, chalky texture and great elegance.

The second, lower terrace of the site comprises younger stony soils interlaced with lumps of limestone, providing an excellent environment for Sauvignon Blanc. All white wines from the vineyard show a distinctive fine soft chalky texture and great elegance. Mostly destemmed grapes and a parcel or two of whole bunches are vinified to a mix of wild and cultured yeasts in a combination of fermenters and cuves, followed by several months on gross lees in a selection of seasoned French oak barriques.

New Zealand's diverse mesoclimes offer constant challenge in both the viticultural and technical aspects of winemaking. One only gets so many chances, the vagaries of vintage offer unique potential to make a truly articulate Pinot Gris. Fruit is harvested and pressed, cold settled and sent to fermenters. Batches are inoculated to a menu of yeasts, some to accentuate aromatics, others contribute textural richness. Upon completion, batches are kept on heavy lees until assemblage in January, a component is aged in seasoned French oak puncheons.

Marlborough's vineyards yield wines with good length and a smorgasbord of fruit characters. The vines are picked batch by batch, to their own individual timetable. Early picking delivers fruit with higher acidity and wonderful citrus characters. Voluptuous, richly developed expressions are typical of riper, later picked grapes. Crowded House is well rehearsed at taking full advantage of the unique opportunitities presented each season. Parcels are individually vinified, inoculated with a variety of yeasts, held on sedimentery lees for two months to add richness and assembled unoaked into a vibrant, fruit forward styling.
