Ata Rangi Sauvignon Blanc
Wellington Martinborough
Available in cartons of six
Ata Rangi are the product of love for the land and passion for the vine. The dry windy climate consistently delivers low yields with high concentrations of flavour in the grapes. Obsessive attention to detail throughout the growing season ensures the fruit comes in at optimum flavour and balance. The care taken extends to harvesting the warmer side of individual rows and going back a few days later for the cooler side. A term of age on yeast less enhances palate weight and complexity, lovely tropical notes of guava and papaya contend for attention.

From the Lismore and Waiora, Walnut Ridge, Hau Ariki Marae and Southdown Estate vineyards. Sites are all very similar, shallow silt loam over deep, free raining alluvial gravels, rainfall is very low. The naturally low yields, older vines, small canopies and judicious, labour intensive, hand picking of the entire crop, make an essential contribution to the uniquely Martinborough style of Sauvignon Blanc.Grapes are all hand picked, sorted and crushed, a portion is vinified in contact with skins and held for two months, drawing out more complex flavours, which works with the natural acidity to add a refreshing backbone. A third of the wine is fermented in neutral oak barrels for texture and richness.

Light straw colour. Notes of elderflower, lemon/ lime, tropical papaya and hints of fresh fennel are defining features. A full, creamy palate entry, lovely weight and a long and focused finish, a restraint and elegance that's all class. Aiming for a complex, satisfying, food friendly style, a small portion is fermented in older barrels to enhance mid palate weight and texture.

Established amongst the kauri gum fields of New Zealand's northlands early last century, Babich have become one of the most eminent labels. Their reputation for making great wine extends far beyond the land of the long white cloud. Babich operate over a hundred hectares of choice Marlborough vineyards and source grapes from the best local growers. Abundant sunshine and dry autumns encourage grapes to develop under a long, slow, ripening period that intensifies flavours. Following the harvest, grapes are quickly crushed and pressed into fermenters, juices are vinified at controlled cool temperatures to capture and retain the intense varietal fruit.

The Adelaide Hills are renowned for Sauvignon Blanc. Four hundred metres above sea level, the Bird In Hand vineyards face north and boast deep, well drained red earth, formed from metamorphic rock. Batches of the purest free runs, pressed from choice parcels of Sauvignon Blanc are individually fermented at cooler temperatures to retain fresh, lively fruit characters and crisp varietal definition. Although the Adelaide Hills do provide an unfair edge in terms of quality, it's always a thrill for the Bird In Hand team to taste the fruit of their endeavours in the finished wine.

Very light staw hue. Bouquet of greenery and herbaceousness. Citrus flavours, honeydew and tropical fruits, especially passion and grapefruits with a touch of brisk minerality. The palate is fresh and intense, expressing the signature Adelaide Hills style, finishing long, lively and crisp, striking the perfect balance between intensity and elegance. To be enjoyed chilled alongside crustacea, white meat dumplings or Al fresco.

The Galvanized Wine Group is a mob of Aussies with plenty of passion and good creds. The intrepid Ben Riggs makes the wines but all stakeholders, growers and staff get in on the act. To make a Black Chook, selection of site is central to the finished style of wine. The Tomich vineyard yields fruit with exceptional quality and balance. The unequivocally cool climate, very old, low to moderately fertile podsolic over schitz quartz soils yield outstanding Sauvignon Blanc. Parcels of grapes from Block J and Block L are destemmed straight into the press. A regimen of skin contact is employed to extract maximum flavours before inoculation and controlled, low temperature fermentation.

Light, bright straw colour. Freshly cut spring grass and sage on the nose, paired nicely with citrus and a touch of passionfruit sweetness to the mid palate. Call this a wine of many adjectives, fragrant and full of flavour, redolent of fresh herbs and cool climate fruit, stimulating, just perfect with food.
