Beginning with the Bouzy vineyards that originally belonged to founder Philippe Clicquot, subsequent generations, particularly Madame Clicquot, gradually built up the Veuve Clicquot holdings to create one of the most impressive estates in all Champagne. There are some five hundred hectares, half belong to Veuve Clicquot and over a hundred are owned by the LVMH group. The vineyards boast an exceptional average classification of close to 97. Vines are mostly planted to hillsides where soils are shallowest and exposure to the sun is at a maximum. Significantly, Veuve Clicquot adds only a light liqueur doseage during the wine's disgorgement, allowing full expression of the essential Veuve Clicquot style.

A pale gold colour with silver highlights, brilliance and effervescence, a fine and long lasting bead. The nose opens readily, the aromatics are pure yet complex. Chardonnay contributes refined mineral character accompanied by pleasant floral notes of acacia. Aerating the wine reveals hints of yellow fleshed fruit, marzipan and brioche. These give way to delicately spicy aromas, followed by elegant notes of liquorice and high bred teas. In the mouth the wine is silky and generous, evoking fruity and floral, minerals and spice, menthol and toast. A wealth of aromas, a deliciously long and powerful finish. Elegant, remarkably well balanced, the perfect accompaniement to the most refined cuisine.

French Champagnes, Reims
Champagne can mature for decades, reaching a number of perfection peaks along the way. Cave Privée is a limited release of Veuve Clicquot's finest vintages as they reach those peaks of perfection. After seventeen years on lees and two under cork, disgorged to order, individually marked and dated, Cave Privée is treated to a bespoke doseage. Combining the nobility and freshness of Veuve Clicquot 1988 with the power and concentration of Veuve Clicquot 1989, Cave Privée 1990 is the last in a series of three consecutive great Champagne vintages.

Picking started in the second week of September for Chardonnay, a week later for Pinot. The quality of the harvest was remarkable, with vivid fruit characters and the perfect balance of acid. Save for a few areas of Chardonnay affected by botrytis, the quality of all three grape varietals was uniformly superb. A blend of seventeen different crus, all classed as Grand or Premier. Black grapes account for two thirds of the cépage, mostly Pinot Noir from the Montagne de Reims and the Grande Vallée de la Marne, with a tenth of Pinot Meunier from the Premiers Crus of the western Montagne de Reims. The remaining third is Chardonnay from the Côte des Blancs and to a lesser degree, from the Montagne de Reims.

The colour is a subtle gold, with a hint of green or even pink. In the glass, the bubbles are fine and lasting. The nose is impressive for its depth and great richness. From the first, great complexity and concentration are apparent. Fruit aromas dominate, on two levels, firstly ripe fruits (apricots, pineapple), then dried fruits (almonds). After some exposure to the air, further scents reveal themselves, pastries, hints of spice. Slightly toasty notes complete the delightful symphony. The first impression on the mouth is of structure and concentration. Such vinosity is well balanced by a superb liveliness. The candied citrus flavours (mandarins) bring a delightful freshness to the wine. The finish is full and long lasting.

Grapes from as many as sixty different Crus go to the crafting of Brut Yellow Label. Traditionally, the components are at least fifty percent Pinot Noir, up to twenty percent Pinot Meunier, and up to a third of Chardonnay, varying slightly from year to year according to conditions. The Cellar Master has to achieve the total consistency of taste, which makes Brut Yellow Label so immediately recognisable, so utterly reliable both in terms of quality, colour and bouquet. He will draw on priceless reserve wines for the blend, sometimes as much as 40% to ensure the continuity of the House style. Each of these older wines - perhaps nine years old - is kept separately to preserve the unique qualities of the vineyard and the vintage.

Golden-yellow, with a foaming necklace of tiny bubbles. So pleasing to the nose, reminiscent of white fruits and raisin, then of vanilla and later of brioche. Note the fine balance between the fruity aromas coming from the grape varieties and the toasty aromas following the ageing in the bottle. The first sip delivers all the freshness and forcefulness so typical of Yellow Label with asymphony of fruit tastes following on. Here is a true member of the powerful Brut family, well structured, admirably vinous. The lingering aromas echo and re-echo, with each fruit or spice note distinct. Veuve Clicquot Brut Yellow Label manages to reconcile two opposing factors - forcefulness and finesse - and to hold them in perfect balance.

Consolidating the Bouzy properties of her late husband, Madame Clicquot gradually built up the estate holdings through a driving determination to establish the leading marque in Champagne. The Clicquot vineyards today cover over five hundred hectares. These precious assets are spread through the very finest growths, 12 out of a total 17 Champagne Grands Crus and 19 of Champagne's 44 Premiers Crus. The vineyards boast an exceptional average classification of close to 97%, a ranking that is based on the winegrowing properties of the terroir and the quality of fruit. The vines are mostly planted to hillsides where soils are shallowest and exposure to the sun is optimal.

Luminous, sparkling gold hue, amber highlights, fine effervescence within a light bead. Initial mineral nose, white peaches and bergamot, a remarkable intensity. The bouquet develops voluptuous hints of brioche, nougats and apricot, vanilla, frangipane and jasmine. A palate great substance, chalky minerality resonates magnificently. An etude of Verzenay/Avize fruit, the two dominant Crus in this blend of eight. The finish is fresh and generous, indicating a light dosage that does nothing to disturb an exceptional natural balance.
