1 - 8 of 8 Wines By Plunkett Fowles
1
Ladies Who Shoot Their Lunch Shiraz 2010
Strathbogie
An exclusively Strathbogie Ranges Shiraz, most of the grapes come from Rocky Hill Block at Whitegate, with a further component from Block 6 at Upton Run. The magic of this wine evolves while ageing in a collection of very old, large English oak casks. These barrels are home to a hundred years of bugs and bacteria which impart complexity, allowing the wine to breath, integrating fruit and taming the tannins. A beguiling wine of striking colour and elevated aromas, pristine fruit and a persistent, flavourful finish which conjures up images of wilderness and game.

Shiraz is inoculated to various yeast strains and vinified at 23°C under sweep-arm fermenters which tend to develop vibrant perfumes and gripping tannins in the finished wine. A number of ferments create a shallow cap for good extractions. AWRI796 is a neutral yeast which permits the grape and terroir to express itself. Enoferm Syrah is a high glycerol producer which contributes mouthfeel while enhancing the bouquet, contributing violets and black pepper. Upon completion, the majority of components spend time in large and well seasoned 5000 Litres English oak casks. The remainder is treated to maturation in a selection of small format oak, new and prior use French oak hogsheads and puncheons.

Deep red, youthful, purple at the rim. A well perfumed wine with highly aromatic nose exhibiting violets, pepper and spice. Restrained chocolate oak behind a complexity of dried fruit characters. Rich, dark fruit flavours on the full bodied palate, concentrated and offering very good length.

Shiraz fruit that's been slowly ripened on a remote, cool climate vineyard in the Strathbogie Ranges. The wine was inoculated in a range of vessels including a static fermenter, open fermenters and ten tonne roto fermenters. Each fermenter is subject to varied handling techniques and translates into a remarkably different looking wine. The static fermenter usually produces the fruitiest, roto fermentation makes the most robust component whilst an open fermentation translates into the most complex with good middle palate tannins. Blackwood Ridge spent fourteen months under a mix of well saesoned good old oak, including some very large (5000 litre) English casks which are a century old.

Blackwood Ridge is plum red in colour with a hint of purple at the rim. Aromas of blood plums, sweet berry fruits, some varietal leafiness, dark chocolate and pepper, on the palate this wine feels full and rich. Completely redolent with cooloish high altitude characters, red fruits like plums and cherries, the distinctive drive of the exquisite Plunkett wood treatment, all wrapped in ribbons of sweet black pepper. The palate is lush and full-bodied, the tannins are soft and supple, a drink for real roast beef and red wine gravy. Fully mature Shiraz with supple texture and rich fruit, it is well balanced and has great length of flavours, it's a cracker.

Alan and Noni Plunkett planted a small, unirrigated vineyard on the Strathbogie Ranges in 1968, the first in the region. Today, the Plunkett Fowles vineyards occupy over five hundred acres of the choicest ground on the Ranges. At 490 metres above sea level, the vines are stimulated by the coolness of spring to produce small berries, while in summer the low rainfall and intense sunshine nurture fruit that is dense in colour and flavour. Cool and crisp, with a hint of the tropics, 490m is a refreshing Sauvignon Semillon, ideal for chilling with friends.

The Plunkett and Fowles families have a deep appreciation for the granite rich Strathbogie Ranges. For decades they have worked hard accumulating extensive local knowledge, pioneering fruit growing techniques, gaining an intimate understanding of individual vineyard blocks and experimenting with creative winemaking. Their greatest sense of achievement comes from crafting wines that they love to drink and share. Plunkett Fowles retain the best fruit for their own estate labels. 490m is an assemblage of Sauvignon Blanc with Semillon, inoculated to select yeasts and treated to a cool, temperature controlled fermentation in tank to preserve freshness and retain vital fruit characters.

Pale straw colour with green hues. Primary aromas of citrus and slate, thistle and lychee, nettle and cumquat. The ripe expressions of the bouquet continue onto the palate, where they merge with tropical fruit and minerality. Bright characters of lemon and lime on the elegantly structured palate, complimented by tropical flavours of lychee and gooseberry, greener elements of snow pea and lemongrass, supported by a refreshing and persistent, lingering acidity. Following harvest and the crush, Cabernet Sauvignon grapes were inoculated to a Saccharomyces cerevisiae AWRI 796 (a strain first isolated in South Africa), a relatively neutral yeast which allows the rich character of Cabernet to express itself. AWRI 796 produces above average amounts of glycerol, which contributes a sweetness and roundness to the mouthfeel. Parcels were treated to vinification in high tech sweep-arm fermenters to maximise colour and flavour intensity. Ferments were kept at a temperature controlled 25˚C to preserve primary fruit flavours. Stone Dwellers was matured in small one year old, mostly French oak barrels with a smaller percentage of American oaks.

Dense, plum red color. The vibrant, varietal bouquet offers chocolate aromas with oak and spice. The palate shows dark fruits and chocolate, supported by a solid structure that finishes long and lingering. Stone Dweller carries no residual sugar, whilst delivering a good balance of alcohol, meaty tannins and refreshing acid. To accompany an oxtail pie with red wine jus and chestnuts.

Grapes are picked early and harvested throughout the cool of the night to ensure fruit temperature are low , thereby preserving primary fruit characters. The Pinot Noir grapes were whole bunch pressed, a process which minimises phenollic extraction and bitterness, leading to a more delicate wine. Batches are inoculated to culture EC1118, a strong competitive yeast which possesses the ability to ferment at low temperatures, create good flocculation and has excellent alcohol tolerance. Vinified in tank at 15˚C to preserve primary fruit flavours, fermented to dryness, the wine was kept on its lees to add complexity. Stone Dwellers was held on secondary fermentation lees for a short period prior to bottling. Alcohol 12.5%

Lively appearance, creamy and long lasting with a continual fine bread. Bouquet shows bright citrus aromas with peach notes and some yeasty complexity. It has off-dry residual sugar, balanced alcohol, soft balanced tannins and refreshing acid. To accompany hors d'oeuvre, a pungent camembert or smoked mussels.

The ripening period this vintage was long and dry with cloudless days. Vines were heavily pruned to ensure low yields, trimmed to ensure good sunlight exposure for flavour development, inferior bunches and shoots were regularly removed. The fruit was tasted weekly, and then daily when approaching full ripeness, to ensure optimum flavour intensity. Harvested in the cool of the evening 22nd of April. It was then allowed to warm up slowly until optimum temperature for fermentation. Fermentation took thirty six hours at a temperature of 26ºC with carefully selected yeast strains used to maintain the natural fruit balance and finesse. Rack and return techniques, with constant monitoring ensured healthy and virile ferment.

Inky in colour, this is a dense wine crammed with blackberry and black cherry fruit with touches of dark chocolate. Hints of spice and black pepper. A fine, silky tannin structure leaving an enduring impression on the palate. Harmonious oak. Extended maceration at the end of fermentation ensured a rich and fine tannin structure. Upton Run Reserve underwent a lavish fourteen months matuaration in a combination of French and American oak hogs head barrels. 70% fine grain oak French medium toasted oak from the forests of Troncais and Vosges. The wood works in harmony with the fruit and does not dominate the wine. 30% American oak adds a nice touch of vanilla and chocolate, blending well with the fruit and spiceyness.
The Plunkett and Fowles families have combined forces to help lead the charge in the next exciting wave of the Australian wine industry, an alliance built on a solid foundation of experience, knowledge and capability

The Plunkett and Fowles families live in the rugged Strathbogie Ranges - a striking granite massif that rises to over five hundred metres above sea level. They are surrounded by a multitude of dramatic granite outcrops that burst from the surface of these ancient highlands. The region provide great conditions in which to grow fruit: In the coolness of spring the vines produce only small berries and the ensuing low rainfall and the intense summer sun gives rise to a fruit that is dense in colour and flavour.

Perched on a hill at the edge of the Strathbogie Ranges, the stunning new winery with its arching steel roof is a local landmark visible from miles afar. This sizable operation is the result of a merger between Plunkett Wines, Dominion Wines, and Strathbogie Vintners. The Fowles family purchased Dominion wines (which was effectively in receivership), the large winery being the major asset. After considerable to-ing and fro-ing, it was decided the Plunkett and Fowles families would form a joint venture to handle all of the brands within the group. The brands are Stonedwellers (icon), then Upton Run, next Plunkett, and finally Blackwood Ridge. The venture has got away to a dream start.

The showcase winery began operations for Plunkett and Fowles in 2000. Its array of stainless steel tanks have the capacity to store 2.5 million litres of wine. The winery features a vast barrel hall with 1000 barrels and an enormous loading bay. The winery is the crucible five main wine brands of wine for Plunkett Fowles, and also produces wine for twenty clients. There are four fulltime, highly-trained winemakers on site (rather more than is usual for a winery of its size) enabling thorough attention and skill to be paid to each batch of wine.

The Plunkett Fowles winery has a fully-equipped laboratory for wine and grape analysis. At the height of the vintage (the harvest season - usually from March until May) the winery operates twenty four hours a day with twenty staff. The winery has the capacity to crush 7500 tonnes of fruit each vintage. There are three tank presses, and a whole-bunch grape press for sparkling wine. Further along the production line there are sixteen state-of-the-art sweep-arm fermenters, and a wide array of filtration systems including the latest crossflow filters.

The new Italian-built bottling line deftly handles bottle-rinsing and applying either corks or screwcaps (Stelvins), while its labeller has three heads (giving it the ability to apply three different labels to one bottle). The bottling line can produce up to 2000 cases of wine (or 24,000 bottles) a day. The winery also has its own environmentally sound wastewater treatment plant. Once restored to health, the saved water is put to good use in the spacious gardens and plantations of trees around the facility.
