Pipers Brook Estate Pinot Gris 2011
Pipers Brook & Tamar Valley
Available by the case dozen only
From vines planted in the 1990s to estate vineyards located in the Tamar Valley and around Pipers Brook. The fully ripe expressions of West Tamar are balanced by the naturally high, flavoursome malic acidity derived from Pipers Brook, culminating in a tight, refreshing and complex style. Pinot Gris is a variety which ripens quickly in all but the coolest of climates, well suited to the lower temperatures of Tasmania. The vines are meticulously hand tended, maximizing exposure of the bunches to the sun, achieving complete ripeness and intense flavours.

Crop levels are kept low by selective bunch thinning to increase flavour intensity. Grapes, naturally cooled by the low overnight temperatures, are carefully hand harvested in the very early morning. Fruit is crushed and immediately processed. The philosophy here is to capture and protect the rich natural, delicate characteristics of Pinot Gris. Whilst in the press, grapes are treated to a short period of skin contact, extracting additional flavours that are locked away within the skins, this creates a more complex, rich and savoury style of Pinot Gris. Juices are vinified slowly at very low temperatures in a combination of barrels and fermenters. The oak influence is subtle while contributing complexity and palate weight.

Copper, bronze hue, light golden straw. Complex bouquet with a lovely depth of aroma, the nose is blooming with fragrant pear, jonagold apple, tangelo zest and freshly dried goji berries. A hint of jasmine and gardenia potpourri blends the aroma, finishing with subtle notes of nutmeg and cinnamon spice. The palate is generous, full bodied and dry with flavoursome poached pears in honey, apple strudel, paw paw and goji berry fruits, all of which entice the palate, combined with a sweet ginger and cinnamon spice that gives richness to a fine chalky, mineral dryness on the finish, arising from the natural skin tannins. Ideal with antipasto, oven roasted turkey or white game meats.

Pipers Brook Estate Riesling 2010
Pipers Brook, Tamar Valley
A fully engaging Riesling with alluring perfumes and fine body, from sites in the Pipers Brook and Tamar Valley of northeast Tasmania, an inspiring representation of the steely, complex wines of Alsace. The vineyards are vertically integrated through a rigorous regimen of site selection, viticultural development and management. This style of Riesling bridges the gap between the traditional Aussie which profers citrus, chalkiness and light oil, as opposed to their French counterparts which exude floral scents and offer refined palate structures.

The Pipers Brook vineyards are characterized by idyllic growing conditions. Grapes are encouraged to retain all the delicate but ripe, crisp varietal fruit flavours. Tasmania's cool climate when combined with close planting over gravely soil can yield a fine and delicate Riesling wine. Crop levels are maintained at low levels by bunch thinning to increase the intensity of flavours. The grapes are hand harvested throughout the early morning hours and cooled before an immediate processing to capture and retain the vivacious expression of the vineyard. Following the press, grapes are left on skin to extract additional fruit flavours. All winemaking techniques are designed to protect the characteristics of the delicate Riesling.

Colour is a pale lemon. Lifted, perfumed nose with floral notes and traces of Asian tropical fruits. The palate is elegant and refined yet powerfully concentrated with traces of tangy citrus and tropical flavours, the overall balance is crisp and dry with a light skin tannin structure and soft mineral tones lifting the finish. In its youth the wine is superb, but this is a Riesling of substance which will develop beautifully.

Climatically each vineyard site is different from the next. Its the subtle differences in climatic conditions between sites and between vines that becomes part of the complex answer to the production of cool climate wines of the highest quality for which the winemakers strive to produce. Vineyards along the banks of the Tamar river are located inland, slightly less exposed to the prevailing NW winds blowing off Bass Straight which create temperature cooling effects.

The Tamar River vineyards experience slightly warmer average temperatures than the more coastal Pipers Brook and Pipers River regions

As a consequence grapes generally mature some 10 days earlier with slightly higher yields from the Tamar river vineyards. This increases ripening potential and creates a useful spread of harvesting and processing times. These vineyards provide quality and quantity as well as being ideally suited to the production of later ripening varieties such as Riesling and Sauvignon Blanc.

The cooler climatic conditions experienced by the more coastal Pipers Brook and Pipers River regions create a perfect environment for the production of sparkling wines due to the fruits retention of naturally high acidity, lower sugar accumulation yet early flavour ripeness. Let the fruit hang on the vines a little longer and the premium table wine production of Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Chardonnay and Riesling begins.

Vines like deep porous soils and the best wines are produced where a deep-rooted vine is neither under or over supplied with moisture. Pipers Brook Vineyard have selected the ferrosol or kraznozems of northern Tasmania for their best vineyards because the soils are deep, well drained and with ideal moisture characteristics. Although the red colour makes them look rich, in their native state they are quite poor being quite deficient in phosphorous, zinc and boron.

The winemakers at Pipers Brook Vineyard maintain the soils with low nitrogen levels to make sure the vines do not produce too much top growth

The red soils at Pipers Brook vineyard are classed as kraznozems; they are deep and friable soils derived from volcanic parent and share some physical characteristics with terra rossa soils. Wine exhibits the 'gout de terroir' or specific taste of the site when they exhibit a repeatable character unique to the region and even vineyard.

Tasmanian wines are unique. The sparkling wines, rieslings, pinot noirs, sauvignon blancs, chardonnays are developing a character which is individual to the region. Pipers Brook Vineyard produce genuine expressions of the Tasmanian wine character based on the impact of the terroir. The strength of their commitment is such as to include this word in the vision statement.
