Abercrombie has claimed Grande Medialle d'Or at Concours Mondial de Bruxelles. Over the years it has been internationally feted with multiple awards including Best in Class International Wine & Spirits Competition and two Blue Gold Medals at the Sydney International. Since inaugural release, the best parcels from a selection of the oldest vineyards in Margaret River, the cooler ripening climes of Mount Barker and Porongurup sub-region of Great Southern, have been set aside for Abercrombie. All fruit is hand picked, sorted and vinified in a mix of small static fermenters and open vats. The wines are hand plunged and pumped over as required to balance the extraction of colour, tannin and flavour development.

Opaque red with a purple rim. The nose is filled with blackberry, cedar, tomato leaf, dusty bitumen road and chocolate representing each distinctive component of the harmonious Great Southern and Margaret River blend. On the palate, Great Southern's fruit provides the structural backbone and line of the wine while the Margaret River component lifts the aromatics adding flesh and complexity. The palate starts with a rush of plush red berry fruit and reaches its zenith with damp earth and forest floor complexity balanced by ultrafine powdery and layered tannins. The finish displays the class of the selected vineyards with long fruit and structural elements balanced by supporting mocha oak.

The Great Southern again produced richly textured Cabernet Sauvignon providing the structural backbone to the 2004 Howard Park Cabernet Sauvignon/ Merlot. The Margaret River component has contributed to the structure of the wine without dominating. The fruit was fermented in open stainless steel vats with twice daily pumpovers with active aeration to promote the textural development of the wine. The resultant wine was matured in 70% new French oak barriques for twenty three months prior to bottling.

A dense blood red with a hint of purple on the rim. The wine displays ripe berry and cassis aromas of great intensity typical of Great Southern Cabernet Sauvignon. There is a hint of the chocolate and blackcurrant representing the Margaret River Cabernet Sauvignon. The palate has great weight and presence with a fruit opulence and depth indicative of Cabernet Sauvignon from an excellent year. Bright fleshy red fruit fills the mid-palate which exhibits superb balance and weight in the Howard Park style. The new oak is barely evident, as the fruit moves into a lingering supple tannin finish.“Silken textured and seductive, this beautifully mulberried, leathered, curranty wine is a picture of elegance and control!” -Winefront.com.au.

Extreme high quality batches of fruit were identified on the vine; two batches of Cabernet Sauvignon in the Great Southern and Margaret River regions and a small batch of Merlot from Pemberton. Each batch was treated separately with fermentation in small open vessels with extensive pumpovers aiding full flavour and texture extraction. The Cabernet Sauvignon was allowed to remain on skins for 20 days post-fermentation to futher develop the textural complexity of the wine. Both batches of Cabernet Sauvignon were put to 100% new French oak barriques, the Merlot was put to about 75% new French oak with the balance being one year old wood. The wine was allowed to mature in our air conditioned barrel hall for almost two years prior to final blending and bottling. No fining was required and only a course clean-up filtration performed.

The immediate impression upon looking at the wine is one of youth; vibrant red colours with a dark heart indicate that the wine has good concentration. The nose confirms first impressions with concentrated aromas of dark chocolate and rich berry fruits with attractive cedary notes derived from the oak. The nose gives the impression of being tightly packed and yet to fully emerge typical characteristics of a youthful wine. The palate has intense fruit characters with impressive soft but complex textural components. The wine has youthful freshness and lively fruitiness and is yet to develop secondary complexity. Decanting and breathing of this wine is recommended in its youth. Long term cellaring will realise this wine's true potential.

Scotsdale was acquired by Howard Park as a pastoral property, it was specifically chosen and planted to make a single vineyard wine. Shiraz is harvested according to flavour with little regard for analytical data. Fruit is vinified in open top fermenters and gently hand plunged, integral to tannin development and flavour extraction. Upon completion and some post ferment maceration, the musts are gently basket pressed to French oak barriques. A small component is pressed early to finish ferment in barrel, enhancing palate texture, complexity and oak infusion. Eighteen months maturation achieves full integration of oak and grape tannins, to be followed by minimal fining and filtration before bottling.

Dense, deep ruby colour. Bouquet of dark sweet plums, blackberries, liquorice, cracked black pepper and cocoa. The palate structure is concentrated and compact with intense berry fruits, hints of brushed earth and chalk, entwined with ripe grape and fine oak tannins.
Howard Park Wines was established in 1986 and was one of the original pioneers of the Great Southern region

The founding owner of Howard Park, John Wade ventured west to Western Australia’s southwest with one belief: “I don’t know any other region where you can produce both Riesling and Cabernet Sauvignon as premium wines”. This founding belief began the journey of Howard Park. Howard Park remains a family owned winery under the guidance of Jeff and Amy Burch. With a philosophy to produce wines of distinct regional character with an uncompromising commitment to quality Howard Park has forged an international reputation for their wines and an expanded range including single vineyard and multi regional wines from Margaret River and the Great Southern. The two region philosophy aligns with Howard Park’s goal which adopts an ethos for integrating the old with the new.

Howard Park

Howard Park Wines has a very simple mantra when it comes to the production of its wines - premium wine can only come from excellent fruit. Since its foundation Howard Park has held the belief that each variety is best suited to particular climates and soil types within the two premium wine regions of Margaret River and the Great Southern. Howard Park are only ever produced in very small quantities, but are noted for their rare balance of elegance and power with a proven history of ageing with increased complexity and interest.

Over the years, Howard Park has exerted considerable effort into defining and classifying the vineyards in these two regions by variety to ensure the quality levels demanded are continually upheld and improved. We believe this approach ensures that each bottle of Howard Park wine is the finest expression from these two regions and continues to over deliver on your expectations.

Howard Park is driven by a simple philosophy; premium wine can only come from excellent fruit. Howard Park is committed to Western Australia’s premiere grape growing regions of Margaret River and the Great Southern. Commited to sourcing the very best fruit from specific vineyards and in many cases specific blocks. Committed to traditional winemaking skills, the use of new French oak and careful blending procedures to ensure perfect harmony is achieved.

Howard Park embraces modern technology whilst employing traditional wine making techniques and produces internationally recognised wines of the highest quality. During vintage, the winemakers drive over 26,000 kilometres testing, selecting and carefully monitoring the fruit. Amongst the growers, Howard Park has earned a reputation as being tough, rejecting more fruit than what is accepted.

Howard Park Wines has been based at Denmark, a small coastal town located within Western Australia’s Great Southern region, since its inception in 1986. Home of Madfish Bay and situated 450 kilometres south of Perth, the coastline at Denmark and along to nearby Albany (50kms east) rates among the most beautiful in the South-West. With its numerous vistas of towering native eucalyptus, karri, marri and jarrah trees and beautiful Bays whose chilly winds blow all the way from the Antarctic, Denmark provides the playground for fishing, surfing, swimming, snorkelling and boating. Since the 1980s this former timber town has grown steadily supported by new agricultural, horticultural, tourism, arts and crafts, and conservation-based industries. Today Denmark is the centre of a thriving, diverse community that is proud of its unique environmental heritage. A charming country town with a population.

Howard Park's newest winery is located just outside the small town of Cowaramup, the birthplace of what is now the Margaret River Wine Region. In 1988, the undulating, partly cleared land was an attractive but run-down sheep farm which was originally part of the West Australian Government Group Settlement Lots issued to pioneering families to develop agriculture in the 1920s. Howard Park’s Margaret River cellar door and wineworks now sit in the middle of the estate and are accessed by one of two winding entries both lined by Birch trees amidst the vineyard. The winery stands on top of a hill on the most elevated point of the Leston Vineyard and is flanked by tall marri and karri trees and commands impressive views over the vineyard and Wilyabrup valley. The fully functional winery has been widely acclaimed for its award winning architecture incorporating feng shui principles with contemporary Australian design.
