Egon Muller draws fruit from the Saar's most superior sites, the original two hundred year old estate property at Scharzhof or the prestigious Le Gallais vineyard in Wiltingen. Muller owns a large portion of the stately Scharzhofberger property, the equivalent of a Cote d'Or Grand Cru, one of Europe's finest vineyards. So particular is Egon Müller about the quality of his Scharzhof Qualitätswein, that he may include parcels from Scharzhofberger, to be vinified around a backbone of fruit from Saarburg and Wawern, Wiltinger Braunfels and Wiltinger Kupp.

Egon Muller Scharzhofberger Auslese
Saar
Scharzhofberger is one of the most famous sites in Germany and was probably planted by the Romans. It is extremely steep at a gradient of 30° to 60° and quite high in elevation. Every year, those parcels of Riesling which are worthy of the late picked Auslese style are hand selected by Egon Müller, to be vinified into one of the Rhineland's most cherished wines.

The soils at Scharzhofberg are very deep and without bedrock, originally formed by gray Devonian slate decomposition. The site is very well drained but still holds sufficient moisture, a characteristic shared by many of the finest European vineyards. The distinguished einzellagen comprises sixty seven acres, of which Egon Muller owns eighteen. The wines are fermented to wild indigenous yeasts and matured in thousand litres oak foudres. The aim is to craft the finest example of traditionally hand made Auslese. The well seasoned barrels are kept in deep, very cold, damp cellars, originally constructed by mediaeval monks, which offer the perfect environment to gently age the wines.

Pale gold hue. White fruit aromas and floral bouquet, citrus, peaches and pear. A rich palate with bright citrus acid balancing the sweetness of fruit flavours. The wine displays stony minerality, hints of acacia and lilac, grilled exotic fruit, sweet stone fruits and bracing acidity all combined in perfect harmony. The finish is very long, with generous, lingering complexity.

Scharzhofberger was likely planted by the Romans. One of the most historically significant vineyards in all Europe, it belonged to the monastery St Marien ad Martyres during the middle ages. Scharzhofberger is one of the finest vineyards in Germany and indeed all Europe. So great is its fame, it remains one of only a handful of German vineyards, whose wines are sold without mention of the village name. Soils are composed of grey and red slates, very loose and well drained, they form a unique synergy with the microclimate to provide singular conditions for Riesling. Riesling grapes exhibiting the requisite qualities of a Spätlese are fermented mostly through the action of wild yeasts in old, thousand litres oak foudres. The wines are raised in ancient cellars which were built by mediaeval monks. The deep, very cold and damp environments make the perfect environment in which to gently age the wines.

The highly elevated Le Gallais property at Wiltingen is notable for being one of the few Mosel vineyards that looks down onto the Saar rather than into one of her tributaries. The sheltered bend, between Kanzem and Wiltingen, is considered the best microclimate in the district. Weingut Egon Müller acquired half of the eminent estate in 1954, leasing the balance of the property from Madame Rochon. Braune Kupp is fermented mostly through the action of wild yeasts in old, thousand litres oak foudres. The wines are raised in ancient cellars which were built by mediaeval monks. The deep, very cold and damp environments make the perfect environment in which to gently age the wines, built for the long haul.

Light golden straw. Exotic nose of sweetly scented citrus, stonefruits and banana with florals and fragrant Bäckerei notes. Medium bodied palate exhibiting fine minerality and chalky acids in support of the rich, complex Riesling fruit characters, lime, honeysuckle and slate.
