The Porongurup ranges are a small sub region of elevated vineyards that grow particularly fine Riesling. The winters here are bitterly cold and the soils mean, ideal for the production of crisp, clean fruit for MadFish. Harvests are immediately processed to ensure the highest quality juices without phenolics. All batches are kept separate and treated to a cool fermentation, retaining maximum fruit character without cluttering the wine. The final assemblage is fashioned to achieve a fuller and more generous rendering of Great Southern Riesling. Alcohol 12.5%

Bright pale straw, green hues. The nose is wonderfully aromatic, showing lime skin and white citrus flower notes. An upfront burst of floral and citrus juice flavours leading to a tight and crisp middle palate of great focus. The team at MadFish believe that good viticultural management grows healthier fruit and makes a better wine, while maintaining a healthier environment. The classic regional blend of white varietal grapes, Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc are treated to a controlled vinification without the interference of any oak to allow the complex fruit characters to dominate. Low fermentation temperatures achieve a maximum retention of fruit flavour and aromatics while ensuring the finished wine is completely dry. Early bottling has also preserved the fresh fruit flavours and vibrant characters of the vineyard.

Pale straw hue with tints of green. A wonderfully aromatic nose, bursting with fruity esters. The palate, like the nose, is also complex with many layers of fruit flavours and a clean fine structure. Brian Bicknell had been making wine around the world for many years. He returned to Marlborough on a mission to isolate vineyards of unique and individual expression, to construct a range of wines which can articulate the wealth of terroir and microclime clime to be found across greater Marlborough. The rose tinged Pinot Gris grape holds a fair amount of tannin, Mahi endeavour to minimize skin contact for a gentler palate. Being a fruit of low acidity, Mahi ferment the juices right through to dryness in a measure of oak, building structure while preserving eloquence.

$2299each $275DOZEN EACH DOZEN Pinot Gris is hand picked off a single vineyard, just outside the township of Ward in Awatere Valley, owned and managed by Pam and Polly Francis, fully certified under Bio-Gro as completely organic. Grapes are whole bunch pressed so that the time on skins can be minimised, essential for Pinot Gris, which can affect the finished wine with unwanted phenolic or tannin from the robust skins. Nothing but the purest free run juices are employed, for a more elegant and subtle style. Components are treated to a cool vinification to preserve the expression of site. A portion of the juices are barrel fermented in seasoned French oak, contributing weight of palate, while keeping the oak influence in check.

Light peach yellow hue. Delicately fragrant pear and citrus nose, leesyness and curd notes, a supple hint of milk and nougat oak. A structured palate of effusive fruit character, pears and candied citrus rind, endowed with cool ripened richness supported by a curl of mealy, cashew oak. A lingering finish of great purity, balanced, textural and long.

The winemaking at Mahi is deeply focused on expression of individual terroir, regional blends in the traditional Marlborough style are simply not an option. The Mahi team take aim at a wine that satisfies across the palate, Sauvignon Blanc which offers texture and depth, rather than displaying basic varietal fruit. Selection of site is the key, looking for grapes with layers of flavour, to craft a wine with a sense of time and of place, a wine which challenges you to listen and to contemplate, to comprehend that Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc are not all created equal.

$2299each $275DOZEN EACH DOZEN Parcels of Sauvignon Blanc from several sites are co-vinified alongside a backbone of fruit, hand harvested off the stoney portion of Wadworth Vineyard and a late picked portion from Guernsey block. Bunches are pressed as whole clusters to minimize time spent on skins. Exclusively free run juices are treated to vinification at cooler temperatures to retain the true expression of vineyards. Smaller portions are sent to a selection of seasoned French oak for barrel and wild indigenous yeast ferments, adding to textural mouthfeel and palate weight while limiting the influence of oak. Upon completion, components are assembled into the final wine, aimed to strike perfect balance within the sum of parts.

Light straw hue. Vitally clean nose of citrus and tropical fruits, hints of wild ferment, gooseberry and supple French oak notes. A more subtle and elegant expression of Marlborough, well rounded within a creamy mouthfeel, gooseberries and passionfruit flavours are supported by a dusting of fresh herbs and green vegetable notes. A juicy, lingering and exquisitely clean finish.

Coonawarra is the source of astonishingly good Riesling, when one considers the lofty standards of viticulture and pursuit of winemaking excellence, it will come as no surprise that Majella makes one of the best. Established in the 1990s to soils which had been enriched by generations of cattle grazing, the single block of Majella Riesling vines yield a restrained and refined, adults only style. Judiciously dry while remaing highly food friendly, Majella works beautifully with the freshest fishes, Asian inspired flavours and spicy recipes make a piquant match.

$1999each $239DOZEN EACH DOZEN A short but distinguished history of viticulture has formed strong associations between Majella and many of the nation's most eminent labels. The Wynns, Hardy and Brands Laira labels all played a role in establishing Majella as a regional flagship and leading Coonawarra winemaker. Majella’s estate grown Riesling comes from a single vineyard, the Silica block, established 1994. Fruit is harvested and gently pressed with very limited skin contact to preserve fruit aromas and flavours while minimizing phenolics. Juices are vinified in chilled fermenters and bottled as a young wine to retain crisp citrus freshness.

Light straw green hues. Expressive of red apple and blossoms, lime pith and pear aromas. A mouthful of deliciously dry fruit that's articulate of its Coonawarra provenance, apple and pear flavours share centre stage, citrus, seashell and calico characters in support. They source Sauvignon Blanc from over thirty well established and proven sites, to craft a consistent performer on the cross Tasman wine show circuit. Every vintage is a special batch of the very best Sauvignon Blanc, made from the pick of Marlborough's finest fruit. A magnificent match alongside grilled snapper or asparagus recipes.

$2799each $335DOZEN EACH DOZEN Whitehaven pride themselves on their quality of fruit. Vines are trained to three or four canes on a vertical trellis. Balanced pruning, shoot thinning, tucking and trimming are used to achieve an open, healthy canopy and clean fruit as the cool nights serve to retain acid freshness and delicate flavours. Grapes are immediately with minimal contact on skins. After settling, the clear juices are vinified in fermenters at very low temperatures through the action of select yeast strains to preserve the distinctive Marlborough varietal characters.

Crystal clear, straw hues. Vibrant white currant, nettles and gooseberry aromas around a core of persistent grapefruit. Some pungent herbaceous and capsicum characters fill the background. The palate is full and vibrant, fresh nettle, gooseberry and tropical fruit flavours abound, lingering on the long, clean acid finish.
